THE STATE ASSAY OFFICE OF CALIFORNIA. 1850. BY EDGAR H. ADAMS. NEW YORK. PRIVATE GOLD COINAGE. I. THE STATE ASSAY OFFICE OF CALIFORNIA. As the years gradually force farther into the background the worldfamous gold days of '49, the interest of students of American history in that important period of the nineteenth century becomes more pronounced, and every detail of those times when adventurers flocked to the Western El Dorado from all parts of the world, overland and by sea, is now beginning to attract attention. Conspicuous among the many novel features of California in the pioneer days is the gold currency, of various forms and denominations, made outside of Government authority from the gold taken from the placers of the Sierra Nevada mountains. At the time of the issue of this coinage there were so many happenings of greater importance that but little attention was paid to it except from the standpoint of utility. But now that all the great occurrences of the period of '49 have been noted, discussed, and assimilated, the less important happenings are beginning to rise to the surface, uppermost among which comes the unofficial gold coinage. So little familiar are we now-a-days with the conditions of the past in respect to private gold coinage that we view with astonishment the fact that such issues were freely made and as freely circulated; and there naturally ensues the desire to know why such coins were made, what were the circumstances that brought them into being, and why the Government took no steps to prevent their manufacture and circulation. As there were no less than fifteen establishments in California which from time to time made gold coins for circulation from 1849 to 1855, an exhaustive history of the operations of all...

Renz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Private Gold Coinage of the United States: A Treatise on the Subject of "Private and Territorial Gold Coins of the U. S.," Including the First Important Issues of the Bechtlers and the Later California Coinage From the Various Private Mints of That State Thru the medium of present day scenario and fiction writers the the picture and story of the pioneer is vividly brought to us. We may still see the covered wagon, stage coach and pony express. We may still witness the hardships these pepple endured, the misfortunes, the brighter side; sudden wealth, love, romance, and the fascination of it all. While we do not seethese things in reality, we do however, as numismatists, preserve that which is real and appropriately emblematic of the pioneer. I refer, of course, to the private issues of gold which are so scarce today and cherished so much by the numismatist. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Private Gold Coins Struck in the United States, 1830-1861: A Complete Illustrated List of the Various Coins Issued by Private Assayers in Georgia, Carolina, Colorado, Utah, Oregon and California Upon the discovery of gold in California and the influx of prospectors and traders there was an immediate need for a medium of exchange other than the unwieldy bags of gold dust. Several firms struck coins in 1849 and the State Assay Office of California, with Frederick D. Kohler as State Assayer, began stamping ingots early in 1850; a few of these still exist. In the latter part of 1850 the firm of Moffat Co. Were designated as United States Assay representatives and Augustus Humbert of New York was appointed United States Assayer to place the government stamp upon the ingots produced by Moffat Co. This business was in 1852 con ducted under the name of the United States Assay Office. For a full account of the preceding and the operations of other com panies see Edgar H. Adams Private Gold Coinage of California. The Mormon coinage grew out of the same necessity and appeared early in 1849. It did not, however, compare with the California coinages in actual intrinsic value. The firm of Clark, Gruber Co. In Denver coined gold from the Colorado mines and produced over worth in 1860 and 1861. The Parsons and Conway companies were much smaller operators. Way up in Oregon the same need for a medium of exchange produced the two pieces struck by the Oregon Exchange Co. In 1849. It has been thought best to limit the scope of this work to a complete illustrated list of the various coinages, excepting the minor die varieties existing in some of the California pieces. Book Studies in Pacific History

Download or read book Studies in Pacific History written by Dennis O. Flynn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002.In recent years scholars have begun to conceptualize the history of the Pacific Ocean as a subset of world history. This question is taken up in the introductory chapter of this volume, which sets out four periods of modern Pacific history: a silver period, 1570s-1750; a period of early integration, 1750-1850; a gold period, 1850-c.1900; and a period of imperial strategies after the gold rushes. The next chapter looks at the fur trade of the Pacific coast of America, and its dependence on markets in China and Russia, followed by a set which focus on the era of the gold rushes, in California, Australia and New Zealand, when the pace of Pacific integration grew rapidly and new markets opened across the ocean. The last chapters examine aspects of the subsequent evolution of the Pacific Ocean into an ’American lake’, looking in particular at the interlocking of politics and migration. This volume carries forward study of the ’Pacific Centuries’, promoting the conceptualization of the Pacific Ocean as a coherent unit of analysis, and providing further important steps toward provision of the multi-century framework that is required for proper understanding of today’s ’Pacific Century’.
