Book Desegregating Private Higher Education in the South

Download or read book Desegregating Private Higher Education in the South written by Melissa Kean and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the influences on the racial policies of the elite private universities in the South in the wake of World War II. As pressure to abandon segregation in higher education grew, the presidents and trustees of these institutions struggled-with both outsiders and with each other-to maintain their traditional leadership role in southern society while also joining the national mainstream. By the early 1960s, realizing finally that they could not have both, they grudgingly opened admissions to black students and thereby gave themselves a chance at national eminence.

Book excerpt: Anthony Eden, who served as both Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister, was one of the central political figures of the twentieth century. He had good looks, charm, a Military Cross from the Great War, an Oxford first and a secure parliamentary constituency from his mid-twenties. He was Foreign Secretary at the age of 38, and the first British statesman to meet Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin. Eden's dramatic resignation from Neville Chamberlain's Cabinet in 1938, outlined here in the fullest detail yet, made an international impact. This ground-breaking book examines his controversial life and tells the inside story of the Munich crisis (1938), the Geneva Conference (1954), Eden's battles with Churchill over the modernisation of the post-war Conservative Party and his rivalry with Butler and Macmillan in the early 1950s, culminating in a fascinating analysis of the Suez crisis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeking Eden promotes an awareness of, and appreciation for, Georgia’s rich garden heritage. Updated and expanded here are the stories of nearly thirty designed landscapes first identified in the early twentieth-century publication Garden History of Georgia, 1733–1933. Seeking Eden records each garden’s evolution and history as well as each garden’s current early twenty-first-century appearance, as beautifully documented in photographs. Dating from the mid-eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries, these publicly and privately owned gardens include nineteenth-century parterres, Colonial Revival gardens, Country Place–era landscapes, rock gardens, historic town squares, college campuses, and an urban conservation garden. Seeking Eden explores the significant impact of the women who envisioned and nurtured many of these special places; the role of professional designers, including J. Neel Reid, Philip Trammel Shutze, William C. Pauley, Robert B. Cridland, the Olmsted Brothers, Hubert Bond Owens, and Clermont Lee; and the influence of the garden club movement in Georgia in the early twentieth century. Book Imagining Eden

  • Author : Lyle Gomes
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2005

  • Pages : 82 pages

Download or read book Imagining Eden written by Lyle Gomes and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Because Eden’s genius resides in imagination, it is a mobile spirit; always found in place but never confined by place. The spirit of Eden migrates within us, animated through our imaginative responses to actual places in the material world, in our roles as gardeners and poets, painters and photographers." --from the introduction What did Eden look like? In Imagining Eden the photographer Lyle Gomes observes landscapes that represent the idea of locus amoenus--the pleasant place. The tradition of locus amoenus goes back to the idyllic descriptions of fictional locations, often called Arcadia, in the writings of Sappho, Apollonius, and Virgil, in the imagined period of the Golden Age. We also recognize this concept in Eden, of course, where it suggests a loss that still haunts our imaginations. It is an idea distinctly different from that of wilderness, for we feel protected in these places--even provided for, though there is no sign of toil. The chance that this Eden might somehow be regained gives the concept its consolatory power. For fifteen years, Gomes has traveled across America and Europe to find examples of this enduring ideal of place in parks, English gardens, even golf courses. Gomes’s search took him to Mount Auburn cemetery, Central Park, Monticello, the San Francisco Presidio, villa gardens near Italy’s Lake Como, Melbourne Hall in Derbyshire, and private gardens such as Biltmore and Dumbarton Oaks. Imagining Eden includes an eloquent introductory essay in which the landscape historian Denis Cosgrove explores how the concept of the locus amoenus relates to Gomes’s work, and the photographs are accompanied by an evocative selection of quotes by the various settings’ designers and by inspired observers. The book concludes with an extensive interview in which Gomes discusses how he balances craft and inspiration, the role of research in preparing a shoot, his preference for black-and-white over color ("I was completely, and immediately, enamored with the silver image"), and a sense of discovery as a chief motivation in all his work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eden's Bridge: The Marketplace in Creation and Mission explores a biblically based theology of the marketplace implicit in the creation narrative of Genesis 1-2. The thesis validates the calling and ministry of all marketplace Christians. David Doty invites readers to rethink and redirect the purposes of vocation, trade, and profit toward the purposes of God's Kingdom, as they were revealed in the beginning and are to be restored in Christ's reign. This book is eye-opening and inviting as it explores how God is moving to reclaim the marketplace for His Kingdom, and His redeeming purposes for the world of commerce. The marketplace holds untold potential if business is conducted according to God's plan: poverty can be eradicated, abundant living can be shared among all people, and shalom can prevail. Eden's Bridge offers hope for recovering from the recent collapse of the global economic system by envisioning a new view of how wealth is made and how the marketplace is yet to serve God's purposes in His mission to the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eden's name became inextricably linked to Suez, and Rothwell provides an important reassessment of Eden's role in this pivotal crisis. He gives overdue attention to the wider Middle East situation, and explains Eden's failure to manage the Anglo-American relationship in the crisis in terms of his life-long lack of warmth for the United States, which verged at times on anti-Americanism. Eden remains a central figure in twentieth century international politics, and all those interested in international history as well students of international relations, will find Rothwell's new political biography compelling reading.
