This book was released on 1957-12-15 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this careful and thorough study of a Canadian field which has been relatively untouched in recent years, Dr. Brecher records and comments on the development of monetary and fiscal thinking in Canada in the inter-war period, and its impact on public policy in the federal sphere. Examining Canadian opinion about economic theory during this time, the author draws on four fields of thought: that of government and other public officials; of businessmen, such as bankers, and their views on what should be done about the depression; of the "radical group", such as those prominent in the formation of the CCF and Social Credit parties; and of economists, prominent in the universities. Dr. Brecher points out in his preface that his inquiry is rooted in the conviction that the problems associated with cyclical fluctuations remain sufficiently complex to make an understanding of the developments of the twenties and thirties an indispensable condition for effective stabilization policy. He finds the twenties distinguished only in the superficial and imperfect diagnosis of and remedial suggestions for unemployment, made chiefly by a relatively small handful of thinkers associated with the Progressive and United Farmers movements, then emerging in the West. It was the thirties which, under the impact of the depression, witnessed the first real stirrings of careful economic analysis in cyclical terms, and of statistical techniques for measuring the value of annual productive activity and income receipts in the Dominion. The author has attempted to appraise the evolution of the Canadian policy of monetary and fiscal stabilization within the thought environment in which it was conceived and implemented, and on the basis of the standards set by modern income-employment theory.

Download or read book Canadian Economic History written by W.T. Easterbrook and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1988-12-15 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through three centuries of development, the history of the Canadian economy reflects the shifting roles of natural resources, industrializations, and international trade. This volume, a standard in the field since its initial publication in 1958, presents a comprehensive account of these and other factors in the growth of the Canadian economy from the time of the earliest European expansion into the Americas. The authors consider economic organization both on the level of the national economy and on that of the individual business unit. Among the subjects examined are the growth of the fur, fishing, and timber trades; the impact of successive wars; money and banking; the development of railway and canal systems; the wheat economy; the growth of organized labour; and twentieth-century patterns of investment and trade. The focus throughout is on the role played by business organizations, large and small, working with government, in creating a national economy in Canada.
Download or read book The Canadian Economy written by A.E. Safarian and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2009-11-13 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the collapse of the global financial markets in 2008, economists and commentators have looked back to the Great Depression of the 1930s to discover similarities and solutions for recovery. Contributing to this crucial moment, renowned economist A.E. Safarian has added a new preface to his classic study of the Great Depression, discussing the present crisis and suggesting ways in which future crises might be avoided. Essential reading for economists, historians, and politicians, The Canadian Economy in the Great Depression is the definitive study of the country's worst period of economic failure, covering the period from the stock market's rise in the roaring 1920s, through the Great Crash, to the destitution of the 1930s and the eventual economic recovery. Countless students, journalists, and political leaders, including current US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke, have used it to better comprehend the complicated nature and history of the markets. With remarkable clarity Safarian untangles the web of relations that led to - and sustained - the Great Depression while also examining the economic controls and stimuli put in place during the Depression and how and why these measures failed. This new edition introduces The Canadian Economy in the Great Depression to a new generation, particularly those concerned about the possibility of another Great Depression.
Download or read book Economic Growth in Canada written by N. Harvey Lithwick and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1967-12-15 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely study fills some serious gaps in the historical record of economic development in Canada and compares it with that in the United States pointing out the parallels in development that have resulted from similarities in tastes and technologies and the high degree of monility between two economies. In addition, it clarifies certain mistaken notions about the Canadian economy by evaluating the sources of past growth and anticipating the potential open to the country. This edition includes a chapter which examines Canadian experience over the past decade and compares it with that of the United States. This work will be valuable to economists, policy makers and the informed layman. There is a minimal amount of complex mathematics and the bulk of the statistical material is relegated to the apendices.
