Hollis Frampton (1936–1984) was one of the most important experimental filmmakers and theorists of his time, and in his navigation of artistic media and discourses, he anticipated the multimedia boundary blurring of today’s visual culture. Indeed, his photography continues to be exhibited, and a digital edition of his films was issued by the Criterion Collection. This book offers the first collection of critical writings on Frampton’s work. It complements On the Camera Arts and Consecutive Matter, published in the MIT Press’s Writing Art series, which collected Frampton’s own writings. October was as central to Frampton as he was to it. He was both a frequent contributor—appearing in the first issue in 1976—and a frequent subject of contributions by others. Some of these important and incisive writings on Frampton’s work are reprinted here. The essays collected in this volume consider Frampton’s photographic practice, which continued even after he turned to film; survey his film work from the 1960s to the late 1970s; and explore Frampton’s grounding in poetics and language. Two essays by the late Annette Michelson, one of the twentieth century’s most influential writers on experimental film, place Frampton in relation to film and art history. To the extent that Chinese contemporary art has become a global phenomenon, it is largely through the groundbreaking exhibitions curated by Gao Minglu: "China/Avant-Garde" (Beijing, 1989), "Inside Out: New Chinese Art" (Asia Society, New York, 1998), and "The Wall: Reshaping Contemporary Chinese Art" (Albright-Knox Art Gallery, 2005) among them. As the first Chinese writer to articulate a distinctively Chinese avant-gardism and modernity—one not defined by Western chronology or formalism—Gao Minglu is largely responsible for the visibility of Chinese art in the global art scene today. Contemporary Chinese artists tend to navigate between extremes, either embracing or rejecting a rich classical tradition. Indeed, for Chinese artists, the term "modernity" refers not to a new epoch or aesthetic but to a new nation—modernityinextricably connects politics to art. It is this notion of "total modernity" that forms the foundation of the Chinese avant-garde aesthetic, and of this book. Gao examines the many ways Chinese artists engaged with this intrinsic total modernity, including the '85 Movement, political pop, cynical realism, apartment art, maximalism, and the museum age, encompassing the emergenceof local art museums and organizations as well as such major events as the Shanghai Biennial. He describes the inner logic of the Chinese context while locating the art within the framework of a worldwide avant-garde. While the work of diverse, major Egyptian artists during this era may have appeared to be secular, she argues, it reflected the subtle but essential inflection of Islam, as a faith, history, and lived experience, in the overarching development of Middle Eastern modernity. Challenging typical views of modernism in art history as solely Euro-American, and expanding the conventional periodization of Islamic art history, Seggerman theorizes a "constellational modernism" for the emerging field of global modernism. Rather than seeing modernism in a generalized, hyperconnected network, she finds that art and artists circulated in distinct constellations that encompassed finite local and transnational relations. Such constellations, which could engage visual systems both along and beyond the Nile, from Los Angeles to Delhi, were materialized in visual culture that ranged from oil paintings and sculpture to photography and prints. Based on extensive research in Egypt, Europe, and the United States, this richly illustrated book poses a compelling argument for the importance of Muslim networks to global modernism.

Book excerpt: It has been a common theme in histories of sixties and seventies art to contend that, with the advent of Minimalism in the early sixties, artists turned away from representations of artists' inner and private worlds and began to engage moving, perceiving bodies. Alex Potts, in an oft-quoted turn of phrase, termed this move away from represented and toward actual bodies, sixties art's "phenomenological turn." In "Privacy and Abstraction: American Painting, Late Modernism, and the Phenomenal Self," I demonstrate that, in fact, the postwar interest in the phenomenal self is inseparable from and dependent upon a postwar theorization of the self as private. Through an analysis of three instances of postwar conceptions of privacy--constitutional, bodily, and epistemological--in conjunction with three postwar pictorial techniques-- expressionism, post-painterly abstraction, and serial painting--I historicize the concept of privacy as it entered as a key term in defining modernist identities. Through this historicization, "Privacy and Abstraction" explains how a mid-twentieth-century concept of privacy and a distinctly phenomenological approach to the self coincide, not only historically, but also conceptually--a relation that is only legible, I demonstrate, in the context of the cold war discourse of privacy, which conceptualized privacy as an attribute of the phenomenal, publicly situated self. By rereading such canonical artists as Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Helen Frankenthaler, Kenneth Noland, and Frank Stella in light of the shared cultural space that the subject of privacy illuminates, this dissertation rethinks the divisions that have long defined this period.
