Book excerpt: Prisoners of War, 1861-65 is a firsthand account of the experiences of Union and Confederate soldiers who were held as prisoners of war during the Civil War. The book includes descriptions of prison life, accounts of escape attempts, and reflections on the psychological and emotional toll of captivity. Prisoners of War, 1861-65 also provides a broader analysis of the conditions and treatment of prisoners on both sides of the conflict, and the impact of the war on the concept of humanitarian treatment of prisoners of war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prisoners of War, 1861-65: A Record of Personal Experiences, and a Study of the Condition and Treatment of Prisoners on Both Sides During the War of the Rebellion In 1864, the regiment of which I was adjutant was placed on guard over Camp Morton near Indianapolis, Indiana, then one of the largest prisons for rebels in the North, and in the Winter of 1865 I was made a prisoner at the battle of Fort Stedman in front of Petersburg, Virginia, and was confined in the well-known Libby Prison at Rich mond. I thus had the opportunity of seeing at first hand both Sides of this much mooted question, the treatment of prisoners. The facts as I saw and experienced them, and the conclusions I reached, I shall try to give you. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Soldier s Story

Download or read book A Soldier s Story written by Miles O. Sherrill and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Soldier's Story: Prison Life and Other Incidents in the War of 1861-'65 I have been requested to write some incidents, experiences and observations of prison life during the war of 1861-'65. After thirty-eight or thirty-nine years it is somewhat difficult to recall anything like all that transpired in those dark days. Some people say it is time to stop talking about that war. Now, that would be a hard thing for those who lived in those days to do: stop talking about the war. The men, women and children at home had almost as hard a time as those at the front - not quite so dangerous, yet it required courage and true patriotism to stand in their places. Furthermore, it seems necessary, in order to keep history straight, that those who lived and participated in that part of our history should occasionally be heard from, otherwise those who write so much, who live north of the Mason and Dixon's line, would make our rising generation believe what is false. So I say to all such: "Nothing in the past is dead to the man who would learn how the present came to be what it is." Much has been written and said by our Northern friends as to the suffering of the Union soldiers in Southern prisons - Andersonville, Salisbury and other places - during that war. They draw an awful picture of their poor soldiers suffering and dying in Southern prisons. In some respects this was true. To be in prison of itself was bad enough, but to be there without proper food or medicine was very bad indeed. The South did not have the means, neither the medicine, but the prisoners in our care were put on the same footing as our own poor soldiers. The question is: Who was to blame for this state of things? The Confederate authorities made proposition after proposition for exchange of prisoners, but the Government at Washington positively declined. Download or read book Georgia s Confederate Soldiers who Died as Prisoners of War 1861 1865 written by James E. Stallings and published by J.E. Stallings Sr.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Released just this year, this fascinating recount and examination of life and survival in United States Prison Camps endured by Confederate Soldiers, this book gives rich enhancement of one's understanding of our nation's civil war history. As the title suggests, James Stallings takes the angle of focusing genealogical prison records to his home state of Georgia. However, the letters and recounts mentioned in this book, along with its historical aspects of the prisons themselves, allows the reader an excellent cross-section of Confederate Prisoners of War that suffered and died (as did their fellow countrymen in Confederate camps) in P.O.W. camps set up by the United States Army.
