Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virginia Lomax was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1831. Her work, The Old Capitol and its Inmates (1867), contains her memories of a Washington, D. C. prison, where she was held immediately after the end of the Civil War. Arrested when she attempted to visit her friends in Carrol Prison, she was held prisoner in the adjoining building, the Old Capitol Prison, on suspicion of being a conspirator in Abraham Lincoln's assassination. Her fellow prisoners were Confederate loyalists suspected of conspiring against the United States. Lomax was eventually released through the political maneuvering of her family and friends. In her book she recounts the stories of several of her fellow prisoners in The Old Capitol and describes their daily activities as well as the hardships they experienced. Lomax also discusses the broader problems former Confederates had to address in their efforts to re-assimilate into American society.

This meticulous selection of the firsthand accounts, memoirs and diaries is specially comprised for Civil War enthusiasts and all people curious about the personal accounts and true life stories of the unknown soldiers, the well known commanders, politicians, nurses and civilians amidst the war. "In and Out of Rebel Prisons" is a book based on a Lieutenant Alonzo Cooper's diary. During his ten months imprisonment in the South, Cooper kept a complete diary of events which occurred there and gave a reliable account of what came under his personal observation. "Many books have been written upon prison life in the South, but should every survivor of Andersonville, Macon, Savannah, Charleston, Florence, Salisbury, Danville, Libby and Belle Island write their personal experiences in those rebel slaughter houses, it would still require the testimony of the sixty-five thousand whose bones are covered with Southern soil to complete the tale."

Book Prison Pens

Download or read book Prison Pens written by Timothy Joseph Williams and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prison Pens presents the memoir of a captured Confederate soldier in northern Virginia and the letters he exchanged with his fiancee during the Civil War. Wash Nelson and Mollie Scollay's letters, as well as Nelson's own manuscript memoir, provide rare insight into a world of intimacy, despair, loss, and reunion in the Civil War South. The tender voices in the letters combined with Nelson's account of his time as a prisoner of war provide a story that is personal and political, revealing the daily life of those living in the Confederacy and the harsh realities of being an imprisoned soldier. Ultimately, through the juxtaposition of the letters and memoir, Prison Pens provides an opportunity for students and scholars to consider the role of memory and incarceration in retelling the Confederate past and incubating Lost Cause mythology. This book will be accompanied by a digital component: a website that allows students and scholars to interact with the volume's content and sources via an interactive map, digitized letters, and special lesson plans.

Book I Fear I Shall Never Leave this Island

Download or read book I Fear I Shall Never Leave this Island written by Wesley Makely and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Being a prisoner of war during the American Civil War was a plight full of unknowns. Both the Union and the Confederacy had to manage increasing numbers of captured soldiers. Many had served together before the war but now found themselves on opposite sides. A prisoner exchange system was developed early in the war to return prisoners to their homeland. Unfortunately, by May of 1863, exchange was no longer assured ... In fact, few exchanges took place, and the prospect of being exchanged was slight. Thus prisoners like Captain Makely faced the reality of being a prisoner for an indefinite period of time unless they attempted to escape. The story of Kate's and Wesley's reactions to his imprisonment unfolds through their correspondence. Their frustration, pain, despair, suffering, struggle, and at times even their happiness are manifest in their letters. These are a firsthand account of life on the island, offering a picture of how lives are affected by war and imprisonment. The prisoners at Johnson's Island expressed a continual desire to hear from family and friends. The question of their return to the South through exchange was a constant source of frustration. This set of letters provides insight into the day-to-day struggle of imprisonment, a situation not unique to the Civil War"--Page 2.
