Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remarks on Prisons and Prison Discipline in the United States I owe this to the high standing and intelligence of those who have honored me by the expression of confidence in my judg ment and impartiality and Sincerely regret that I have so little leisure to give to the illustration of these important subjects, upon which volumes might be written, showing the origin, pro gress, and prospects of a Reform so eminently affecting social order, and the Civil Institutions of our Republic. Years of unintermitted labor and vigilance are necessary for producing practically beneficial results, through the influences Of these disciplinary institutions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Vindication of the Separate System of Prison Discipline: From the Misrepresentations of the North American Review, July, 1839 The long-pending controversy respecting the comparative merits of the Auburn (or silent) and the Pennsylvania (or separate) systems of prison discipline, is reduced by the July number of the North American Review to very narrow limits; and, as the writer is evidently the friend and advocate of the former, we may suppose that the claim which he asserts in its behalf is presented in the most favourable aspect, and with all the advantages of the latest and fullest experience. He gives us, in the first place, a schedule of the points on which the friends of either system agree: "That the great object of any penitentiary discipline should be the reformation of the prisoner. "That in labouring for his reformation, we should appeal to his self-interest and to his conscience. "That we should endeavour to give him such habits as will remove him as far as possible from temptation, and enable him most successfully to resist it when it shall happen to overtake it. "That the treatment of the prisoner should be kind, but strict. "That being placed in solitude for a sufficient portion of the time, and at all times precluded from social intercourse with those who would corrupt him, conscience may be left to exert its full power over the mind of the criminal. "That he should be instructed in his duty to God and man by a competent religious teacher. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prisons and Prisoners A. Thorough conviction of the high importance of the qu estion of Prison Discipline, as it bears upon the moral and social condition of the community, and the positive assurance felt of the general want of correct information, together with a large amount of existing preja dice, are the considerations which have induced the writer to enter upon the subject of the following pages. His particular atten tion has long been given to the condition of penal institutions and their general regime, and as Opportunities have been presented, he has made himself acquainted with the main points of dispute te specting the prevailing systems of discipline at home and abroad, and in no limited degree, by personal observation, has endeavoured to ascertain their practical results. Book A Memoir of General James Oglethorpe

Download or read book A Memoir of General James Oglethorpe written by Robert Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Memoir of General James Oglethorpe: One of the Earliest Reformers of Prison Discipline in England, and the Founder of Georgia, in America An American writer has truly observed that, the life of Oglethorpe was so full of variety, adventure, and achievement, that it would require but little embellish ment to make it a tale of romance. It was the fine combination of chivalry and philanthropy in his cha racter, graced as it was by a variety of accomplish ments and the love of letters, that excited the admira tion of Johnson, called forth the eulogy of P0pe, and induced Thomson to celebrate the praises of the pri soners' friend and the founder of Savannah. Yet to this day, throughout a time, too, which has produced numberless Lives' of much less remarkable men, England has furnished no biography of James Oglethorpe, the precursor of Howard, the establisher of a Colony and defender of others, the generous patron of many rising authors, some of whom afterwards left their marks in English literature, and a man whose long career abounded with incident. Nor has the omission been caused by insufficiency of materials in dustry and perseverance only were necessary to gather and arrange the scattered fragments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Defence of the System of Solitary Confinement of Prisoners Adopted by the State of Pennsylvania: With Remarks on the Origin, Progress and Extension of This Species of Prison Discipline The prison at Auburn in New York, which has scourged itself into notoriety, has not one particle of originality in any essential feature, as many of its advocates in that state, and elsewhere, attempt to persuade the public.
