Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is an honor to write a recommendation for Captain Johnson's book. We worked together for several years, planning and plotting to reduce the flow of contraband into our prison, Lee Correctional Institution. At all times, he was fully professional in his dealings with both inmates and staff, by his example, modeling for us how to be better.Captain Johnson's book is "on point," as he would like to say, in three ways: It tells in horrifying detail the assault on him at his home, then puts the assault in the context of the contraband market. An inmate group found him simply too effective to be allowed to continue his work. This context is the second value of his book; it educates readers about the dangers of cell phones in prison and the link of the contraband trade back to the neighborhoods in which we live. The third focus of his book is education. Step by step, he takes the reader into a cell search, pointing out the mistakes that veteran and rookie COs could make and offering his own tricks for a thorough search. It is certain that new hires coming through basic training could use this book as their guide both to learning about contraband as well as learning about professionalism in corrections.Captain Johnson delivers his best in a prison, in a classroom, and in our community.-Margaret Jean Bell, author of the novel Prison Grits

Book Convicts Codes and Contraband

Download or read book Convicts Codes and Contraband written by Vergil L. Williams and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text applied economic principles to the analysis of the prison economy, prison hustling and inmate careers in both men's and women's institutions. Prisons provide a basic subsistence for inmates, but deny them legitimate income-producing opportunities. Therefore, the study starts with the proposition that prisons are islands of poverty in which a high demand is created for goods and services such as coffee, food, drugs, weapons and sex, and goes on to examine the economic systems that develop. Three types of hustling are identified. The most elaborate is that of the entrepreneurial clique under the leadership of the antisocial 'right guy' who utilizes the techniques of ghetto hustling. He organizes his clique by using the methods and providing the services of a crime syndicate. The second system involves inmates who achieve sufficiently high levels of production to qualify as 'merchants'. They produce enough goods to become involved in reciprocal trade arrangements with other prisoners. In women's prisons, for social as well as economic reasons, inmates develop a 'family' system and lesbian butch/"femme" relations, with families supporting themselves through barter and theft.

Book Contraband Cell Phones in Prisons

Download or read book Contraband Cell Phones in Prisons written by Daniel J. Estevez and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as consumer demands for mobile devices have risen rapidly, the use of cell phones by prison inmates has grown as the U.S. prison population continues to expand. This use is considered contraband by prison officials. The number of cell phones confiscated by prison officials has dramatically increased in only a few years. This increase in unauthorised cell phone use by inmates is a mounting concern among correctional administrators across the country. This book investigates and examines wireless technology solutions to prevent contraband cell phone use in prisons, such as jamming, managed access, and detection.

Book Incarceration and the Law Cases and Materials

Download or read book Incarceration and the Law Cases and Materials written by Margo Schlanger and published by West Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-29 with total page 1071 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the age of American mass incarceration, a complex legal regime governs prison conditions and presents a host of controversial questions at the intersection of constitutional liberty, statutory interpretation, administrative regulation, and public policy. This is a completely overhauled, re-titled, and much-expanded version of the leading casebook about incarceration. It addresses both pretrial and post-conviction incarceration, presenting Supreme Court and leading lower court case law, statutes, litigation materials, professional standards, academic commentary, and prisoner writing. Topics include conditions of confinement, civil liberties, particular prisoner populations and relevant legal issues (race and national origin discrimination, the particular issues/law governing treatment of incarcerated women, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities). Litigated remedies (injunctive litigation, damages, the Prison Litigation Reform Act, and criminal prosecution of prison staff), are also covered in detail, as is non-litigation oversight. The casebook is supplemented by an open-access website that offers additional resources and sources for further reading.

Book Cell Phone Contraband in Georgia Prison

Download or read book Cell Phone Contraband in Georgia Prison written by Angela Williams (D, M.) and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quantitative research study was conducted to determine the effect of cell phones on correctional officers performing their duties. The aim of the study was to gather quantitative data from correctional officers within three state prisons in southern Georgia concerning cell phones in prison, perception of dangers they pose, and limitations they place on officers' ability to perform their job duties. A 5-question survey was developed and piloted with 25 correctional officers not involved in the study and not assigned to the facilities selected in order to ensure validity of the results. The population for this study consisted of correctional officers, sergeants, and lieutenants employed at three state prisons in southern Georgia. The results identify the specific danger faced by correctional officers who catch offenders with cell phones. The results indicated that 76.52% of officers surveyed strongly agreed that cell phones increase the possibility of inmate-staff-assaults, 94.2% of staff agreed that cell phones impact their ability to perform their job and 26.8 % of staff agreed that inmate-staff-assaults occur more frequently than reported as a result of recovering a cell phone. A descriptive analysis showed that the 23.19 % of staff surveyed reported that the discovery of cell phones in inmates' possession affected their specific job duties of conducting count and maintaining security of the facility. Descriptive analysis further indicated that 73.33% of staff surveyed feared being assaulted by an offender, and 12.17% feared being killed by an offender over a cell phone issue.

Book The Social Order of the Underworld

Download or read book The Social Order of the Underworld written by David Skarbek and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When most people think of prison gangs, they think of chaotic bands of violent, racist thugs. Few people think of gangs as sophisticated organizations (often with elaborate written constitutions) that regulate the prison black market, adjudicate conflicts, and strategically balance the competing demands of inmates, gang members, and correctional officers. Yet as David Skarbek argues, gangs form to create order among outlaws, producing alternative governance institutions to facilitate illegal activity. He uses economics to explore the secret world of the convict culture, inmate hierarchy, and prison gang politics, and to explain why prison gangs form, how formal institutions affect them, and why they have a powerful influence over crime even beyond prison walls. The ramifications of his findings extend far beyond the seemingly irrational and often tragic society of captives. They also illuminate how social and political order can emerge in conditions where the traditional institutions of governance do not exist.

Book excerpt: "The claim of The Black Poets to being... an anthology is that it presents the full range of Black-American poetry, from the slave songs to the present day. It is important that folk poetry be included because it is the root and inspiration of later, literary poetry. Not only does this book present the full range of Black poetry, but it presents most poets in depths, and in some cases presents aspects of a poet neglected or overlooked before. Gwendolyn Brooks is represented not only by poems on racial and domestic themes, but is revealed as a writer of superb love lyrics. Tuming away from White models and retuming to their roots has freed Black poets to create a new poetry. This book records their progress."--from the Introduction by Dudley Randall

Book excerpt: With the loving eye of an amateur botanist, poet Julie Poole has distilled nature to its finest, tender points. Through poems spread delicately across the page, interspersed with images of the pressed flowers themselves, Poole’s poetry gives voice to a meditative expression of flora. Each poem creates an individual cataloged world through which to explore the body, sexuality, strength, and a devout refusal to admit the separation between humans and nature. Inspired by the Billie L. Turner Plant Resources Center at The University of Texas at Austin, the largest herbaria in the Southwestern United States, Bright Specimen weaves together a written index through the harmony of botanical wonder.

Book American Prison

Download or read book American Prison written by Shane Bauer and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-06-11 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An enraging, necessary look at the private prison system, and a convincing clarion call for prison reform.” —NPR.org New York Times Book Review 10 Best Books of 2018 * One of President Barack Obama’s favorite books of 2018 * Winner of the 2019 J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize * Winner of the Helen Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism * Winner of the 2019 RFK Book and Journalism Award * A New York Times Notable Book A ground-breaking and brave inside reckoning with the nexus of prison and profit in America: in one Louisiana prison and over the course of our country's history. In 2014, Shane Bauer was hired for $9 an hour to work as an entry-level prison guard at a private prison in Winnfield, Louisiana. An award-winning investigative journalist, he used his real name; there was no meaningful background check. Four months later, his employment came to an abrupt end. But he had seen enough, and in short order he wrote an exposé about his experiences that won a National Magazine Award and became the most-read feature in the history of the magazine Mother Jones. Still, there was much more that he needed to say. In American Prison, Bauer weaves a much deeper reckoning with his experiences together with a thoroughly researched history of for-profit prisons in America from their origins in the decades before the Civil War. For, as he soon realized, we can't understand the cruelty of our current system and its place in the larger story of mass incarceration without understanding where it came from. Private prisons became entrenched in the South as part of a systemic effort to keep the African-American labor force in place in the aftermath of slavery, and the echoes of these shameful origins are with us still. The private prison system is deliberately unaccountable to public scrutiny. Private prisons are not incentivized to tend to the health of their inmates, or to feed them well, or to attract and retain a highly-trained prison staff. Though Bauer befriends some of his colleagues and sympathizes with their plight, the chronic dysfunction of their lives only adds to the prison's sense of chaos. To his horror, Bauer finds himself becoming crueler and more aggressive the longer he works in the prison, and he is far from alone. A blistering indictment of the private prison system, and the powerful forces that drive it, American Prison is a necessary human document about the true face of justice in America.
