Book The Black Art Renaissance

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joshua I. Cohen
  • Publisher : University of California Press
  • Release : 2020-07-21
  • ISBN : 0520309685
  • Pages : 301 pages

Download or read book The Black Art Renaissance written by Joshua I. Cohen and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading African art’s impact on modernism as an international phenomenon, The “Black Art” Renaissance tracks a series of twentieth-century engagements with canonical African sculpture by European, African American, and sub-Saharan African artists and theorists. Notwithstanding its occurrence during the benighted colonial period, the Paris avant-garde “discovery” of African sculpture—known then as art nègre, or “black art”—eventually came to affect nascent Afro-modernisms, whose artists and critics commandeered visual and rhetorical uses of the same sculptural canon and the same term. Within this trajectory, “black art” evolved as a framework for asserting control over appropriative practices introduced by Europeans, and it helped forge alliances by redefining concepts of humanism, race, and civilization. From the Fauves and Picasso to the Harlem Renaissance, and from the work of South African artist Ernest Mancoba to the imagery of Negritude and the École de Dakar, African sculpture’s influence proved transcontinental in scope and significance. Through this extensively researched study, Joshua I. Cohen argues that art history’s alleged centers and margins must be conceived as interconnected and mutually informing. The “Black Art” Renaissance reveals just how much modern art has owed to African art on a global scale.

Book Russian Ballet

Download or read book Russian Ballet written by David Bomberg and published by . This book was released on 1919 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The booklet was a project Bomberg embarked upon in time he could spare from his work as an official war artist. The lithographs were executed on zinc plates, the original designs for them being drawings from 1914, done at a time when Bomberg was strongly influenced by Diaghilev's designs for the Ballet Russes. One hundred copies of the booklet were handprinted by Bomberg, with the covers sewn on by his wife Alice. The imprint of Henderson's (a bookshop in Charing Cross Road) was probably added after Bomberg was prevented from selling the booklets himself at the Alhambra Theatre, where Diaghilev's company was performing in 1919. Book Painters in the Theater of the European Avant garde

Download or read book Painters in the Theater of the European Avant garde written by Marga Paz and published by Actar. This book was released on 2000 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early decades of the 20th century saw unprecedented cooperation between the performing and visual arts. Painters and other visual artists working in a variety of avant-garde styles, such as Cubism, Surrealism, Dadaism, Constructivism, and Futurism, worked in the world of theater and dance throughout Europe, creating masterpieces inspired by the explosion of creativity in the performing arts, from the ballets of Diaghilev and Balanchine to the plays of the Russian Meierkhol'd and Futurists such as Marinetti, and operas by the likes of Wagner and Offenbach. It was this burst of integration that led to the formulation of the idea of the "Total Art Creation," (a term coined by Wagner), and enriched both the theater and the visual arts. This handsome volume, published on the occasion of a major exhibition at the Reina Sophia Museum in Madrid, examines these avant-garde experiments in fusion between the arts with extensive color illustrations by virtually every major painter of the period: artists like Picasso, Kandinsky, Leger, and others, as well as in-depth essays on several of the performing art forms and the ways they involved visual artists in their production.
