Book Principles of Medicine and Medicine Without Principle Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Medicine and Medicine Without Principle Classic Reprint written by Elijah de Voe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Medicine, and Medicine Without Principle When I first entered upon the duties of a Physician, I was struck by the fact that Medical Practice of all schools was destitute of any reliable principles governing treat ment of disease. That there was no certainty that the treatment of different physicians of any School of Medicine would be based upon the same fundamental ideas in any given case. Physicians of every school are liable to differ in regard to the expression of disease. They are also liable to differ as to treatment, even when they agree in diagnosis, i. E., in the description of disease. As I gained experience in the use of medicines I discovered certain land-marks or principles which have guided me in their application; and I have never known them to betray me. I publish an outline of these principles, because I believe them to be of great value to the public. Although a knowledge of them may not qualify every individual always to dispense with a professional doctor, it may. And should be, a protection against medical imposition; and, furthermore, we deem it but fair that one who finds fault with the practice of others should show a better way. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Medicine: Introducing Medical Principles to Students and Non-Medical Readers A work on Medicine must be colored, in some degree, by its author's conception of the nature of Life. On this theme there are divers views, for the full discussion of which there is here no place. The author professes himself, however, an adherent of a school of thought that is not, at present, greatly in fashion. He ranges himself as a vitalist under the banner of Aristotle and as a follower in the goodly company Of Harvey, Hunter and Virchow, of Claude Bernard and Johannes Muller. He believes that there is a principle in living things that cannot be expressed in chemical or physical terms. He believes that this principle works to an intelligible end, that it is an Entelechy, an indwelling purposiveness, and that it is as real a thing as anything that is. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles and Practice of Medicine It is highly interesting to observe that Hahnemann instinctively fol lowed the same primary and necessary plan, in studying the effects of remedies, which the primitive physicians were obliged to follow in their first studies of disease. Hahnemann rejected the major part of the materials of all the physicians who preceded him, and as the human mind will always act in the same manner under like circumstances, be naturally took the identical primary and elementary steps, in the study and diagnosis of remedies, which the ancient physicians took in their first studies of disease and its diagnosis. Download or read book The Principles of Medicine Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by John M. Scudder and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Medicine, Vol. 1 Medical teaching has been very crude and imperfect, in practical medicine, from the want of a proper systemization of facts, and the development from these of pathological and therapeutic laws. In place of this we have been presented with the theories of closet practitioners, and the vagaries of dreamers, who were always more persistent in making known their views than the modest toiler by the bedside of the sick, in the dea'-room, or in the laboratory. There has, however, been a great change in this regard within the last quarter of a century; and men now value the facts of observation more than the conclusions arrived at by reasoning from imperfect data. Thus, the practice of medicine has attained such development that it may he regarded as a science. Webster defines science to be "a collection of the general principles or leading truths relating to any subject, arranged in a systematic manner." In order, therefore, that the practice of medicine should he termed scientific, it is necessary that there he certain well-defined truths, and that these he so grouped together as to establish fixed principles. Many deny that there is any science in the practice of medicine, and only admit it in chemistry and anatomy, out of the seven branches taught in our colleges. Others, and among these our best writers, while claiming that medicine is a science, almost entirely ignore it in practice, and in writing, results are given as almost entirely or quite empirical. That practical medicine is an art to he studied, and perfected by continued practice, must he admitted, but I claim that there is an underlying scientific basis that needs to be known to give the greatest success. The empiric may have success, hut it is only after lie has generalized his observations. and formed in his own mind, certain definite principles. Book Principles of Medical Jurisprudence

Download or read book Principles of Medical Jurisprudence written by Amos Dean and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Medical Jurisprudence: Designed for the Professions of Law and Medicine I have been careful as far as possible, in all cases, to make a distinct refe rence to the source from which the fact, principle, or case stated has been de rived. I have done this in the hope, not only of possessing the reader with the principle, and a brief outline of the case which illustrates it, but also, at the same time. Of placing before him such references as will enable him to make fuller investigations in regard to any point or principle he may be interested in studying. It is not, therefore, the exclusive design of this work, to supersede other and more voluminous works on the subjects embraced in it; but to furnish, in as intelligible and concise a form as possible, the substance of what they contain, with references to them for fuller discussions and minuter details of cases. At the same time, it aims to be sufficiently full and minute in its expo sition of facts, principles and illustrations, to possess the mind with such an amount of knowledge as may be necessary for all the general purposes for which it may be required.
