Book Principles of Economic Zoology Field and Laboratory Guide Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Economic Zoology Field and Laboratory Guide Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Lewis Sylvester Daugherty M. S. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Economic Zoology Field and Laboratory Guide, Vol. 1 A satisfactory course in Zoology requires field, laboratory, and text-book work on a series of typical animals. This method will bring the student into contact with the animal world in its manifold relations. The teacher may follow any order which he prefers, but the studies in this guide are arranged With a view to seasonal supply. Insects are plentiful and easily obtained by the class in the fall, while fishes, frogs, and turtles may be kept in aquaria or purchased at any time from dealers in zoologic supplies. Also, the dissection of the vertebrate forms is less unpleasant in the winter. Earthworms and lower forms may be obtained in the spring. Zoology is a study of animals and not information about animals. As Ruskin says, the greatest thing in the world is for a man to see something and to tell clearly what he saw. It is intended that the student find his answers in the animal before him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Economic Zoology The authors have long felt the need of one book in the hands of the student which would give not only the salient facts of structural Zoology and the development of the various branches of animals, but also such facts of natural history or the life and habits of animals as to show the interrelations of structure, habit, and environment. For we believe that a knowledge of both structure and life-history is necessary before any suggestions or discoveries can be made concerning the principles which underlie and control all animal life, including that of man. For it is principles and their application for which we are searching. This book is an attempt to supply this need. It is especially designed to accompany the Field and Laboratory Guide (Part I). For the sake of the natural history many examples have been included. To reduce the size of the book it has been necessary to print this natural history in smaller type, but that in no way implies that it is of minor importance, and it is by far the most interesting portion of the subject. The scientific names need not, in all cases, be learned. They have been used because common names are so often misleading. Book Directions for Laboratory and Field Work in Zoology

Download or read book Directions for Laboratory and Field Work in Zoology written by Robert W. Hegner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Directions for Laboratory and Field Work in Zoology: For Use in Connection With Practical Zoology There are two chief reasons for separating the labora tory exercises from the textbook: (1) the pupils should not be tempted to depend upon their textbook to answer the questions that are asked in the laboratory, but should make original observations and then arrive at their own conclusions; and (2) teachers do not as a rule agree as to the order of the exercises or their contents, hence it is better to have the laboratory guide separated from the textbook in such a way as to enable the user to modify the order of procedure with the least possible confusion. The great amount of material available for laboratory study has of course necessitated a selection of subjects. The animals included have been chosen with the idea of combining interest with profit so that the pupil may be come acquainted with the common animals which he encounters more or less constantly in his daily life as well as with those that are of particular economic importance. Zoological principles, however, have not been slighted, but have been introduced in their appropriate positions. Many of the animals that are important economically are very difficult to obtain, and directions for the study of these have, of course, been omitted. These animals should, however, be demonstrated to the students when ever possible. A list of species suitable for laboratory study may be compiled from the textbook, and specimens may be obtained from the dealers whose names appear in the appended list. Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
