Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic work of industrial economics, first published in 1920, offers a clear and insightful analysis of the causes and consequences of labor disputes. Pigou argues that such disputes arise from a failure of the market to accurately reflect the true costs and benefits of labor. He proposes a variety of methods for resolving disputes and promoting industrial peace, from government mediation to collective bargaining. This book remains a valuable resource for scholars, policymakers, and anyone interested in the economics of labor markets. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods of Industrial Peace There is a surprising lack of books in the English language on the vital matter Of industrial peace. Four or five small volumes, the latest now ten years old, exhaust the list. I have embraced the opportunity thus Offered to treat the subject more comprehensively than has yet been done, and to bring the treatment down to the present year. Discussions of such matters have been rendered more profitable by the recent introduction of the term collective bargaining and by the discrimination of mediation, conciliation. Book Guild Principles in War and Peace Classic Reprint

Download or read book Guild Principles in War and Peace Classic Reprint written by S. G. Hobson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guild Principles in War and Peace Indirect interest in maintaining the unemployed - the indirect interest, namely, of safeguarding order. The Trade Unions, likewise, have an interest secondary to that of the industry itself, since their only object in undertaking the support of their unemployed is the maintenance of their own Union. Only the Employers, therefore, have a direct interest in the matter; and one which, besides being essential, is comparable to other of their functions. In what way, for instance sentiment apart - does either the necessity or the obligation to maintain a reserve of Labour differ from the admitted necessity and obligation of the employer to maintain his reserves of mechanical power, horse power, or raw materials? In none of these instances does he expect the State or other corporations to assist him in bearing the cost of maintaining a reserve, why, then, should he expect the cost of his Labour reserve to be borne by others The reply, of course, is that it is due partly to custom and partly to the circumstance that in fact the employer is able to throw the cost of his Labour-reserve upon others. But not only is his right to do even what he can here challenged, but proposals are made for instantly laying upon his shoulders a burden which was always properly his own, but which hitherto he has shifted to the shoulders of the State and the Trade Unions. In Short, Mr. Hobson's suggestion is that in future every industry shall bear its own burden of Labour reserve, without the aid of either the State or the Trade Unions. Book The Quest of Industrial Peace Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Quest of Industrial Peace Classic Reprint written by W. M. Clow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quest of Industrial Peace The chapters of this book are the record of an inquiry into the elements of the ever-recurrent industrial strife, and of their action and re action on each other. An analysis of the contentions so decisively in conflict is followed by a brief exposition of the chief social and industrial adventures of the past. Then there is a statement and a criticism of the theories and proposals so eagerly advocated to-day. An endeavour has been made to exhibit the complex problems and the involved issues, moral and psychological, economic and political, which have foiled the enthusiastic idealists of the past, and are preventing the assent of the more thoughtful minds of the present day. The two closing chapters engross a message and a method, stated in the briefest possible way, which seem to the writer to point out the only path of industrial peace for those who are sincerely willing to seek it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Peace, 1921, Vol. 9 Tits reluctance of private employers and the employing departments of municipalities to submit their demands for wages reductions to arbitration has excited considerable comment. And not a little adverse criticism. It is held that during the war and the transitional period which followed the armistice. Organised labour, at that time strong and aware of its strength. Consented to the settlement of its claims by the Committee on Production and the Industrial Court of Arbitration which followed it. It is therefore but right (we are told) that now, when the tide has turned and the economic power of labour has been enormously reduced, the employers should agree to the determination of wage changes by a similar impartial tribunal. But an examination of the facts of the case will show that the analogy is false. And that in refusing to employ the method of arbitration employers are by no means inconsistent. It is not, indeed. Too much to say that they are but pursuing the policy which organised labour itself approves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Terms of Industrial Peace Classic Reprint

Download or read book Terms of Industrial Peace Classic Reprint written by Alex Ramsay and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Terms of Industrial Peace The labour question is one of those which in some form or other is constantly, and not always pleasantly, being brought to our notice. The relations between Capital and Labour, and the effect which they will presently have upon our productive power as an industrial people, have recently been considerably discussed. In the following pages I have attempted to state the case fairly, as one who has seen both sides of the problem, and to outline a scheme whereby the two contending elements may be brought together. The discussion is brief, and much more could be said, but an engineer who controls labour employed upon munitions is much too busy at the moment to do more than sketch his ideas, even though the subject be of such supreme importance and the problems involved those with which he is daily coming into contact. In writing this book I have made a very sincere attempt to approach the subject from a strictly neutral standpoint; with the result, doubtless, that I shall be told by some of my labour friends that the proposals do not go far enough, and by some employers that they go much further than is desirable.
