Book Multiple Intelligences

Download or read book Multiple Intelligences written by Howard E. Gardner and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 1993 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Howard Gardner's brilliant conception of individual competence is changing the face of education today. In the ten years since the publication of his seminal Frames of Mind , thousands of educators, parents, and researchers have explored the practical implications of Multiple Intelligences (MI) theory—the powerful notion that there are separate human capacities, ranging from musical intelligence to the intelligence involved in understanding oneself. Multiple Intelligences: The Theory in Practice brings together previously published and original work by Gardner and his colleagues at Project Zero to provide a coherent picture of what we have learned about the educational applications of MI theory from projects in schools and formal research over the last decade.

Book The Application of the Multiple Intelligences Theory in a Special Education Classroom

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1983, Howard Gardner proposed the Multiple Intelligences Theory to explain intelligence as the ability to perform skills and solve problems valued by the society. Although the theory was not designed to become a teaching strategy, education professionals readily accepted MI both nationally and globally. In accordance with much of the research conducted regarding MI Theory since its inception in 1983, this study was conducted to determine if the application of the Multiple Intelligences (MI) Theory as an alternative form of assessment in a social studies curriculum for students with disabilities will decrease behavioral problems related to potential failure, anxiety and frustration while promoting academic excellence and scholastic creativity? Upon reviewing the literature, MI was appealing to instructors for a variety of reasons such as validating existing teacher experiences, the multicultural dynamic of the 21st century classroom and effectiveness of MI for students with disabilities. Furthermore, following the completion of several academic studies of MI and the classroom, the literature found that MI promotes intellectual strengths of the student, encourages student self-reflection and meta-cognition, serves as an alternative form of assessment, produces motivated learners and a sense of mutual respect and collaboration. The researcher expected to obtain similar results when MI was applied to a out of district special day school in Marlboro, NJ. Collier High School serves between 150-200 special needs and at risk youth at the secondary level. Fifteen students were selected from four separate sections of a United States History II as mandated by the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards. The study consisted of two phases encompassing six social studies units. At the completion of each unit, participants were required to complete an end of unit activity. The first three activities restricted student choice and freedom of expression while the second round of end of unit activities contained eight separate activity choices, each aligned to one particular multiple intelligence. Throughout the course of both phases, the researcher collected data using observations, anecdotal records, completion and assessment records and questionnaires. Following the completion of the study and the analysis of the data, the researcher concluded that MI and student choice did decrease behavioral problems related to potential failure, anxiety and frustration while promoting academic excellence and scholastic creativity. Student time on task became more productive while students intuitively collaborated. End of unit activity scores increased for the majority of participants. Finally, the synthesis of questionnaire data revealed that students are more comfortable and motivated when provided to choose a method of expression or demonstrate material comprehension utilizing their dominant intelligence strength. Although a disparity emerged between the perceived dominant intelligence, the participants' activity selection during Phase II, and assessment, potential advantages and disadvantages to the implementation of MI for secondary level students with disabilities were identified while potential solutions were recommended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner has been acclaimed as the most influential educational theorist since John Dewey. His ideas about intelligence and creativity - explicated in such bestselling books as Frames of Mind and Multiple Intelligences (over 200,000 copies in print combined) - have revolutionized our thinking. In his groundbreaking 1983 book Frames of Mind , Howard Gardner first introduced the theory of multiple intelligences, which posits that intelligence is more than a single property of the human mind. That theory has become widely accepted as one of the seminal ideas of the twentieth century and continues to attract attention all over the world. Now in Intelligence Reframed , Gardner provides a much-needed report on the theory, its evolution and revisions. He offers practical guidance on the educational uses of the theory and responds to the critiques leveled against him. He also introduces two new intelligences (existential intelligence and naturalist intelligence) and argues that the concept of intelligence should be broadened, but not so absurdly that it includes every human virtue and value. Ultimately, argues Gardner, possessing a basic set of seven or eight intelligences is not only a unique trademark of the human species, but also perhaps even a working definition of the species. Gardner also offers provocative ideas about creativity, leadership, and moral excellence, and speculates about the relationship between multiple intelligences and the world of work in the future.

Book Teaching for Multiple Intelligences

Download or read book Teaching for Multiple Intelligences written by David G. Lazear and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 50 years, brain researchers have stated that human beings probably use less than 1 percent of the brain's potential, and research findings about human intelligence have transformed almost all previous definitions of intelligence. This booklet addresses the following key findings in intelligence research: intelligence is not fixed or static; intelligence can be learned and taught; and intelligence is a multidimensional phenomenon that occurs at multiple levels of the brain/mind/body system. After this discussion of the research, the publication is divided into five parts: (1) "Overview of the Seven Intelligences" (verbal/linguistic, logical/mathematical, visual/spatial, body/kinesthetic, musical/rhythmic, interpersonal intelligence, and intrapersonal intelligence); (2) "Teaching for Multiple Intelligences: A New Look at the Curriculum" (includes an exercise on how one can teach for multiple intelligences in one's curriculum); (3) "New Instructional Methods for Teaching with Multiple Intelligences"; (4) "Teaching about Multiple Intelligences: Re-inventing the Learning Process"; and (5) "A Multi-Modal Approach to Assessment" (includes techniques for student evaluation and teacher self-assessment). (Contains 27 references.) (LL)

Book excerpt: Whilst most teachers are skilled in providing opportunities for the progression of children’s learning, it is often without fully understanding the theory behind it. With greater insight into what is currently known about the processes of learning and about individual learning preferences, teachers are better equipped to provide effective experiences and situations which are more likely to lead to lasting attainment. Now fully updated, Ways of Learning seeks to provide an understanding of the ways in which learning takes place, which teachers can make use of in their planning and teaching, including: An overview of learning Behaviourism and the beginning of theory Cognitive and constructivist learning Multiple intelligences Learning styles Difficulties with learning The influence of neuro-psychology Relating theory to practice The third edition of this book includes developments in areas covered in the first and second editions, as well as expanding on certain topics to bring about a wider perspective; most noticeably a newly updated and fully expanded chapter on the influence of neuro-educational research. The book also reflects changes in government policy and is closely related to new developments in practice. Written for trainee teachers, serving teachers, and others interested in learning for various reasons, Ways of Learning serves as a valuable introduction for students setting out on higher degree work who are in need of an introduction to the topic.
