II en résulte une synthèse sur les systèmes d'irrigation paysans à travers un questionnement sur cette catégorie, sur ce que la technique nous révèle de la société l'utilisant, et sur le devenir de tels systèmes, notamment dans les endroits où l'irrigation par eau souterraine se développe. Ce travail vise à montrer que techniques et dimensions spatiales de l'irrigation sont à l'interface du façonnage mutuel de la société et de sa représentation de l'eau (la co-construction eau-société), ce qui permet, d'un point de vue méthodologique, d'aborder les enjeux relatifs aux systèmes d'irrigation sous le prisme du technique et du spatial. Il ressort que la gestion de l'irrigation s'insère dans un contexte social, politique et technique de plus en plus large qui incorpore des idées, paradigmes et pratiques de réseaux globalisés valorisant notamment les institutions formelles, les techniques modernes et l'économie monétarisée. Cela conduit à transformer les relations État-communautés, à favoriser certaines relations politiques, mais aussi à accroître les inégalités d'accès à l'eau. On peut alors parler de la fin progressive des systèmes d'irrigation paysans caractérisés par l'utilisation de matériaux locaux et une organisation coutumière.

This book deals with the heritage of water management and the use that was made of water, as well as the impact of water management on heritage. An example of the former may be an ancient irrigation system in the Filipines or in the Middle East that still functions today, while the latter may reflect the importance of maintaining groundwater levels for the preservation of organic remains on archaeological sites or of wooden piles underneath standing buildings. In either case the papers in this book reflect the dynamic nature of water, and hence the equally dynamic relation between water management and heritage. This publication follows up on a Heritage and Water conference in Amsterdam, the first of its kind. Its main purpose is to credibly present the importance and value of heritage and historical experience for water and sustainable development, and vice versa, present the importance of water management for the protection of heritage.
