An examination of leadership styles of 16 school principals provided data for the principal self-evaluative mean scores compared with the mean scores of leadership styles as perceived by the teachers. Two survey instruments provided the data for the two groups within the study: The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire completed by the principals and teachers and the Social Organizational Questionnaire (SOQ) measuring working environments, culture, and climate completed by the teachers.

Book excerpt: At the time of this writing, little research had been done regarding principals’ leadership styles and its effect on teachers’ collaboration in a Professional Learning Community (PLC). I completed a quantitative study in which I surveyed 66 teachers in a large school district in the southeast region of the United States about their principal’s leadership styles and their collaboration in PLCs at their schools. I found teacher collaboration in a PLC positively correlated with each component of the transformational leadership style. Similarly, I found there was one positive correlation and one negative correlation between teacher collaboration and the components of the transactional leadership style. Additionally, I found there were two negative correlations between teacher collaboration and the components of the passive-avoidant leadership style. I also found all components of the transformational leadership style were predictors for teacher collaboration while only one component of the transactional leadership style was a predictor for teacher collaboration. Similarly, only one component of the passive-avoidant leadership style was a predictor for teacher collaboration. Finally, I found the transformational leadership style could predict shared and supportive leadership, supportive conditions- relationships, and shared values and visions among the school. I also found passive-avoidant leadership is not a predictor for collaborative learning and application among the staff. Lastly, I found no leadership styles were predictors for shared personal practice and supportive conditions- structures.

Book excerpt: This instrumental multiple case study examines the actual activities and behaviors of elementary school principals who are known for building a collaborative school culture. The principals in these case studies were nominated by key informants as leaders who empower and mobilize teachers to grow professionally and interdependently in ways that enhance self-direction and motivation through reflecting on their own practices, practicing authentic self-assessment, and setting goals based on evidence of student achievement. Each Southwest Michigan principal was recruited from a diverse sample that met the study criteria. The study design included data from multiple in-depth interviews and documents shared by the case study principals, and a teacher questionnaire with open-ended prompts that asked teachers to describe how the principal worked with them to build a collaborative culture. The researcher first used a first and second cycle coding process to analyze the data from all three cases (Saldaña, 2013). This yielded thematic elements for within-case analysis. These elements were organized according to the study’s conceptual framework and were compared to teacher feedback and follow-up interviews. Finally, a cross-case analysis identified five major themes for creating a culture of collaborative learning: conversation, collaboration, continuous learning, shared leadership, and expanding the culture. Reflection on the findings and further analysis of the interaction between these five themes resulted in a new framework that suggests a ripple effect as an explanation for how those five thematic elements work together to build a culture of teacher professionalism, autonomy, and interdependence. The patterns in the data suggest that these principals start the process of building that culture by employing frequent, focused, and sustained conversations, which produces a ripple effect of collaboration, which ripples into a culture of continuous learning, shared leadership, and autonomy—all of which align to help the school achieve its student success goals.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: While it may seem that in today's society, the leaders of the school should primarily concentrate on curriculum, assessment, and accountability, there is one significant missing piece that is just as important: school culture. Recent educational reform efforts have focused on creating effective school cultures as a means of improving student achievement. Because the role of the principal is viewed as being essential to the successful implementation of these efforts, the demands on school leaders have continuously increased, which have created a multitude of challenges for school leaders across the nation. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the leadership style of principals and school culture as perceived by faculty. A total of 250 teachers from 50 elementary, middle, and high schools located in five school districts in the state of Georgia were selected to participate in this study. Data for this quantitative study were collected using the School Culture Survey, which assessed the following six factors of school culture: collaborative leadership, teacher collaboration, unity of purpose, professional development, collegial support, and learning partnership. In addition, the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire Form 5X was used to classify the leadership styles of principals as transformational, transactional, or laissez-faire. The means, standard deviations, and Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients were used to examine the relationship between the variables. The results of this study indicated that there was a statistically significant relationship between most of the factors of the leadership styles of principals and the factors of school culture. More specifically, the findings indicated that a positive relationship existed between all of the factors of transformational leadership and all of the factors of school culture. In addition, one factor of transactional leadership, contingent reward, was positively correlated with school culture. On the contrary, a negative relationship existed between all of the factors of laissez-faire leadership and all of the factors of school culture.
