Book Roman Monarchy and the Renaissance Prince

Download or read book Roman Monarchy and the Renaissance Prince written by Peter Stacey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-02-08 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with a sustained analysis of Seneca's theory of monarchy in the treatise De clementia, in this text Peter Stacey traces the formative impact of ancient Roman political philosophy upon medieval and Renaissance thinking about princely government on the Italian peninsula from the time of Frederick II to the early modern period. Roman Monarchy and the Renaissance Prince offers a systematic reconstruction of the pre-humanist and humanist history of the genre of political reflection known as the mirror-for-princes tradition - a tradition which, as Stacey shows, is indebted to Seneca's speculum above all other classical accounts of the virtuous prince - and culminates with a comprehensive and controversial reading of the greatest work of renaissance political theory, Machiavelli's The Prince. Peter Stacey brings to light a story which has been lost from view in recent accounts of the Renaissance debt to classical antiquity, providing a radically revisionist account of the history of the Renaissance prince.

Book excerpt: "Events which happened seventy years ago are perhaps rather too far off to be dragged aptly into a mere conversation. Of course the year 1831 is for us an historical date, one of these fatal years when in the presence of the world's passive indignation and eloquent sympathies we had once more to murmur 'Vo Victis' and count the cost in sorrow. Not that we were ever very good at calculating, either, in prosperity or in adversity. That's a lesson we could never learn, to the great exasperation of our enemies who have bestowed upon us the epithet of Incorrigible...." The speaker was of Polish nationality, that nationality not so much alive as surviving, which persists in thinking, breathing, speaking, hoping, and suffering in its grave, railed in by a million of bayonets and triple-sealed with the seals of three great empires.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without doubt, the book of Romans is one of the hardest books in the bible to study and understand and I took one of Derek Princes advice's that 'you cannot get the full richness of this book if you read it casually.' The book of Romans, if read purposefully and carefully, reveals deep spiritual truths about the Gospel of Christ and how we can apply it to our lives to live a victorious life. This book is a compilation of all the teachings I took from studying the epistle of Romans using Derek Prince's teachings on this subject matter. I view the epistle of Romans, as it is in the bible, as a compression of the full Gospel of Christ. In this book, I have expounded the epistle of Romans using Derek Prince's teachings to make it easy for every Christian to read and understand. The book takes a sermon-like-form and is laden with examples from Derek Prince's teachings and references from many parts of the bible including the new and the Old Testament. This book can be richly used for personal study, for meditation, for exhortation, for sermon preparation and for bible study lesson preparation. It provides an easy read for every Christian who yearns to live a victorious life in Christ. My personal testimony is that as I walked through life in salvation, there were still many areas of my life in which I struggled. Deep inside me, I knew that there must be something more to salvation that could afford me to live a victorious life. As I took to this study, I received deep revelation about the truth of the cross and as I learnt how to apply these truths, God delivered me from many of my weaknesses, challenges, and bad habits.God can do the same for you too. If you are experiencing any great challenge in any area of your life and prayer doesn't seem to get you anywhere, maybe it is time for you to delve into this truth, for it is written: "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:32)

Book excerpt: Machiavelli saw history in general as a way to learn useful lessons from the past for the present, and also as a type of analysis which could be built upon, as long as each generation did not forget the works of the past. In "Discourses on Livy" Machiavelli discusses what can be learned from roman period and many other eras as well, including the politics of his lifetime. This is a work of political history and philosophy written in the early 16th. The title identifies the work's subject as the first ten books of Livy's Ab urbe condita, which relate the expansion of Rome through the end of the Third Samnite War in 293 BC. Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli (1469 – 1527) was an Italian diplomat, politician, historian, philosopher, humanist, and writer. He has often been called the father of modern political science. He was for many years a senior official in the Florentine Republic, with responsibilities in diplomatic and military affairs. He served as a secretary to the Second Chancery of the Republic of Florence from 1498 to 1512, when the Medici were out of power. He wrote his most well-known work The Prince in 1513, having been exiled from city affairs.

Book excerpt: The third edition of this magisterial account of medicine in the Greek and Roman worlds, written by the foremost expert on the subject, has been updated to incorporate the many new discoveries made in the field over the past decade. This revised volume includes discussions of several new or forgotten works by Galen and his contemporaries, as well as of new archaeological material. RNA analysis has expanded our understanding of disease in the ancient world; the book explores the consequences of this for sufferers, for example in creating disability. Nutton also expands upon the treatment of pre-Galenic medicine in Greece and Rome. In addition, subtitles and a chronology will make for easier student consultation, and the bibliography is substantially revised and updated, providing avenues for future student research. This third edition of Ancient Medicine will remain the definitive textbook on the subject for students of medicine in the classical world, and the history of medicine and science more broadly, with much to interest scholars in the field as well.
