Download or read book San Bruno written by Darold Fredricks and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As members of the Portola Expedition of 1769 climbed to the top of Sweeney Ridge, they looked upon what is now San Bruno, and beyond it the unspoiled beauty of the San Francisco Bay. Since that time, San Bruno has grown into a major metropolitan area and residential suburb of San Francisco. Along the way it has been home to an important U.S. Navy base, a popular horse-racing track, and a World War II Japanese internment camp. Shown here in 200 vintage photographs is the story of San Bruno from its initial settlement of a handful of people, through the raucous early years of gambling and "watering holes," to its gradual development into a modern, commercial city.
Download or read book Grimm Legacies written by Jack Zipes and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Grimm Legacies, esteemed literary scholar Jack Zipes explores the legacy of the Brothers Grimm in Europe and North America, from the nineteenth century to the present. Zipes reveals how the Grimms came to play a pivotal and unusual role in the evolution of Western folklore and in the history of the most significant cultural genre in the world—the fairy tale. Folklorists Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm sought to discover and preserve a rich abundance of stories emanating from an oral tradition, and encouraged friends, colleagues, and strangers to gather and share these tales. As a result, hundreds of thousands of wonderful folk and fairy tales poured into books throughout Europe and have kept coming. Zipes looks at the transformation of the Grimms' tales into children's literature, the Americanization of the tales, the "Grimm" aspects of contemporary tales, and the tales' utopian impulses. He shows that the Grimms were not the first scholars to turn their attention to folk tales, but were vital in expanding readership and setting the high standards for folk-tale collecting that continue through the current era. Zipes concludes with a look at contemporary adaptations of the tales and raises questions about authenticity, target audience, and consumerism. With erudition and verve, Grimm Legacies examines the lasting universal influence of two brothers and their collected tales on today's storytelling world.

Book excerpt: You may think you know the bedtime stories from the Grimms, but the tales are usually shortened or edited for modern audiences. Yet even when you find a collection of unedited fairy tales, these are actually translations of the 7th edition put out by the Grimms. There has never been a translation in English of the original source material the Grimms recorded when they collected their tales... until now. For the first time ever, read what the stories originally said, before the Grimms started changing the narratives to suit their own purposes. The messages are radically different in these original tales. Your childhood memories may be forever changed! You'll learn who Snow White's original savior was, and why there was no stepmother in the story originally. You'll trace the history of the Sleeping Beauty story to a narrative way more sexual and rife with messages about survival. You'll finally learn why Cinderella's prince doesn't just recognize her face and has to rely on slippers. You'll discover that Rumplestilskin is a more complicated story than you thought. You'll find out what a frog really symbolizes in the Princess and the Frog story, and you'll think twice before telling the original Hansel and Gretel story to your own children... lest they become scared of YOU! All this plus analysis of a few other beloved fairy tales, such as Red Riding Hood, Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast. There's nothing like peering at the original narratives to uncover just how much was changed to create the versions of these stories we know today!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlotte Mary Yonge (1823-1901), was an English novelist, known for her huge output. She was devoted to the Church of England, and much influenced by John Keble, a near neighbour and one of the leaders of the Oxford Movement. Her novels reflected the values and concerns of Anglo-Catholicism. She began writing in 1848, and published during her long life about 100 works, chiefly novels. Her first commercial success, The Heir of Redclyffe (1854), provided the funding to enable the schooner Southern Cross to be put into service on behalf of George Selwyn. Similar charitable works were done with the profits from later novels. She was also editor, for nearly forty years, of a magazine for young ladies, the Monthly Packet with a varied readership, but targeted at British Anglican girls.
Download or read book Perception and Analogy written by Rosalind Powell and published by . This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perception and analogy explores ways of seeing scientifically in the eighteenth century. The book examines how sensory experience is conceptualised during the period, drawing novel connections between treatments of perception as an embodied phenomenon and the creative methods employed by natural philosophers. Covering a wealth of literary, theological, and pedagogical texts that engage with astronomy, optics, ophthalmology, and the body, it argues for the significance of analogies for conceptualising and explaining new scientific ideas. As well as identifying their use in religious and topographical poetry, the book addresses how analogies are visible in material culture through objects such as orreries, camera obscuras, and aeolian harps. It makes the vital claim that scientific concepts become intertwined with Christian discourse through reinterpretations of origins and signs, the scope of the created universe, and the limits of embodied knowledge.
