Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Softcover Edition with Index! Considered by Ratzinger devotees as his greatest work on the Liturgy, this profound and beautifully written treatment of the "great prayer of the Church" will help readers rediscover the Liturgy in all its hidden spiritual wealth and transcendent grandeur as the very center of our Christian life. Among the many liturgical issues that he covers in this work, Cardinal Ratzinger discusses fundamental misunderstandings of the Second Vatican Council's intentions for liturgical renewal, especially the orientation of prayer at the Eucharistic sacrifice, the placement of the tabernacle, and the posture of kneeling. Other important topics he discusses include the following: the essence of worship; Jewish roots and new elements of the Christian Liturgy; the historic and cosmic dimensions of the Liturgy; the relationship of the Liturgy to time and space; art, music, and the Liturgy; active participation of all the faithful; gestures, posture, and vestments. "My purpose here is to assist this renewal of understanding of the Liturgy. Its basic intentions coincide with what Guardini wanted to achieve. The only difference is that I have had to translate what Guardini did at the end of the First World War, in a totally different historical situation, into the context of our present-day questions, hopes, and dangers. Like Guardini, I am not attempting to involve myself with scholarly discussion and research. I am simply offering an aid to the understanding of the faith and to the right way to give the faith its central form of expression in the Liturgy." - Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, from the preface

Book On Space Warfare A Space Power Doctrine

Download or read book On Space Warfare A Space Power Doctrine written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since President Ronald Reagan's speech on ballistic missile defense (BMD) in March 1983, the military use of space has become a hotly debated topic. President Reagan did not mention space, only a plan to place renewed emphasis on the development of a BMD technology. Nevertheless, the speech was promptly dubbed "Star Wars" because the space environment seems to be the most likely place to deploy a ballistic missile defense system, and several administration officials mentioned space-based BMD systems as technological possibilities. Although Americans are accustomed to public debate concerning the merits of proposed weapon systems, the Star Wars controversy covers issues broader. Will space-based weapon systems allow a new strategy to replace assured destruction? Are we prepared to militarize space, an environment that has been treated as a war-free sanctuary since the Eisenhower administration? Are space-based weapons that have been proposed for BMD purposes technologically feasible? This paper provides exceptional insights into the various doctrines that do or would govern military affairs in the space environment. Its strengths are the author's ability to articulate the various doctrines, the historical perspective from which these doctrines are examined, and the broad context from which these doctrines are viewed. The prescription for the space power doctrine presented in this paper is not radically different from the path the United States has already taken. It calls for a complete space transportation system to augment the space shuttle, a system which includes space stations and a family of high- and low-thrust upper stages that will help maintain this nation's technological control of the environment. While this space transportation system will support both civilian and military users, we should develop a separate and primarily military vehicle, the aerospace plane, as soon as possible.

Book The Movement of Clouds Around Mt Fuji

Download or read book The Movement of Clouds Around Mt Fuji written by Helmut Völter and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 15 year photographic meditation on the clouds surrounding Mount Fuji In the late 1920s, Japanese physicist Masanao Abe built an observatory with a view of Mount Fuji. From it, over the course of fifteen years, he recorded the clouds that surrounded the mountain. He was interested in the scientific question of how the air currents around Fuji could be visualized by means of film and photography. Albeit unintentionally, Abe's motifs fit into a long iconographic tradition: the mountain and the clouds. For decades his archive was left untouched in a Tokyo garden shed. Helmut Völter, who discovered Abe's legacy while working on his book Cloud Studies, sifted through the images of the passionate cineaste who saw a combination of individual images, moving pictures and stereo recordings as the ideal form of scientific evidence. The mere contemplation of these dynamic cloud photographs centring on snow-covered Fuji seems to lift the viewer into the air.

Book The Aesthetics of Murder

Download or read book The Aesthetics of Murder written by Joel Black and published by . This book was released on 1991-09 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What connects the Romantic essays of Thomas De Quincey and the violent cinema of Brian De Palma? Or the "beautiful" suicides of Hedda Gabler and Yukio Mishima? Or the shootings of John Lennon and Ronald Reagan? In The Aesthetics of Murder, Joel Black explores the sometimes gruesome interplay between life and art, between actual violence and images of violence in a variety of literary texts, paintings, and films. Rather than exclude murder from critical consideration by dismissing it as a crime, Black urges us to ponder the killer's artistic role -- and our own experience as audience, witness, or voyeur. Black examines murder as a recurring, obsessive theme in the Romantic tradition, approaching the subject from an aesthetic rather than a moral, psychological, or philosophical perspective. And he brings into his discussion contemporary instances of sensational murders and assassinations, treating these as mimetic or cathartic activities in their own right. Combining historical documentation with theoretical insights, Black shows that the possibilities of representing violence -- and of experiencing it -- as art were recognized early in the nineteenth century as logical extensions of Romantic theories of the sublime. Since then, both traditional art forms and the modern mass media have contributed to the growing aestheticization of daily experience -- including murder, suicide, and terrorism." -- Book cover.
