Book excerpt: At its meeting on April 23, 1965 in Paris the Bureau of IUTAM decided to have a Symposium on the Irreversible Aspects of Continaum Mechanics held in June 1966 in Vienna. In addition, a Symposium on the Transfer of Physical Characteristics in Moving Fluids which, orig inally, had been scheduled to take place in Stockholm was rescheduled to be held in Vienna immediately following the Symposium on the Irre versible Aspects of Continuum Mechanics. It was felt that the subjects of the two symposia were so closely related that participants should be given an opportunity to attend both. Both decisions were unanimously approved by the members of the General Assembly of IUTAM. Prof. H. PARKUS, Vienna, was appointed Chairman of the Symposium on the Irreversible Aspects, and Prof. L. I. SEDOV, Moscow, was appointed Chairman of the Symposium on the Transfer of Physical Characteristics, with Prof. P ARKUS being re sponsible for the local organization of both symposia. In accordance with the policy set forth by IUTAM, membership of the Symposia was limited and by invitation only. Financial support for covering the costs of organization and for a partial defrayal of the accomodation and traveling expenses of the participants was provided by IUTAM and by the Austrian Ministry of Education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposal for a Symposium on high temperature effects in solids originated in 1964, at which time a pilot committee, headed by Professor F. K. G. ODQVIST, was formed. Upon the recommendation of this com mittee, a site for the Symposium and a Scientific Organizing Committee were chosen, and some guidelines delineating the field to be covered were established. The Symposium was held at the National Engineering Laboratory in East Kilbride (Glasgow), Scotland, from June 25 to 28, 1968. The Scientific Organizing Committee was composed of the following mem bers: Professor B. A. BOLEY, Chairman (U. S. A.) Professor F. BUCKENS (Belgium) Professor F. K. G. ODQVIST (Sweden) Professor W. OLSZAK (Poland) Professor H. PARKUS (Austria) Dr. D. G. SOPWITH (U. K.) The Local Organizing Committee was subsequently formed; it was direct ed by Dr. SOPWTTH with Mr. R. BRODIE as Secretary, and Mr. C. E. PHILLIPS and Dr. J. GLEN as additional members. It deserves ample praise for excellent arrangements and hospitality. In the discussions concerned with the goals of the Symposium, it was decided that its principal aim should be the presentation of a comprehen sive view of the behavior of solids and structures at high temperature under any type of inelastic regime. It soon became apparent that this was a very wide field, since it would embrace questions ranging from those of basic thermodynamic to those of engineering analysis and design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our rationale for the second edition remains the same as for the first edition, which appeared over twenty years ago. This is to offer simplified, useful and easily understood methods for dealing with the creep of components operating under conditions met in practice. When the first edition was written, we could not claim that the methods which were introduced were well-tried. They were somewhat conjectural, although firmly based, but not sufficiently well devel oped. Since that time, the Reference Stress Methods (RSM) introduced in the book have received much scrutiny and development. The best recognition we could have of the original methods is the fact that they are now firmly embedded in codes of practice. Hopefully, we have now gone a long way towards achieving our original objectives. There are major additions to this second edition which should help to justify our claims. These include further clarification regarding Reference Stress Methods in Chapter 4. There are also new topics which depend on RSM in varying degrees: • Creep fracture is covered in Chapter 7, where methods for assessing creep crack initiation and crack growth are fully described. This chapter starts with a review of the basic concepts of fracture mechanics and follows with useful, approximate methods, compatible with the needs of design for creep and the availability of standard data. • Creep/fatigue interactions and environmental effects appear in Chapter 8.

This book was released on 1967 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author had a desire to contribute to the advancement of a general theory for the analysis of statically loaded elastic structures with all kinds of nonlinearities permitted. The theory should set out from the conception of a structure as an assemblage of a finite number of finite members inter-connected in a finite number of loaded joints. Particularly, the author wished to suggest, develop, explain and term some new concepts in order to facilitate discussion and classification of nonlinear structure analysis, to introduce a compact notation to express nonlinear relations between matrices, to find a necessary and sufficient condition for the validity of Maxwell's and Mohr's work theorem, to clarify the relation between Maxwell's and Mohr's work theorem and the duality (contragredience, cotransference) of the natural transformations, to formulate displacement method solutions for nonlinear structures, to examine the consequences of representing the member load by statically dependent components instead of statically independent components, to review, discuss and classify current methods for the analysis of non-linear structures, to inquire into the possibility of using matrices with variable elements in nonlinear structure analysis, and to peruse and list existing literature on nonlinear structure analysis. After deliberation, the author has decided to omit figures. Figures could illustrate only a few concrete cases, and they might spoil the reader's imagination of the general situation in structure analysis. Needed verification is probably best obtained through examples devised by the reader himself.

Book excerpt: The object and scope of the investigation reported in this paper are accounted for in the Synopsis. The results obtained for infinite plate strips can be used also as particular integrals in the complete solution for a finite rectangular plate. In Chapter 1, a class of real functions here called S-functions, is defined by infinite series of functions of two real variables. Properties of the S-functions that are of interest in the plate analysis are studied. Further functions called U- and V-functions are introduced. They consist of algebraic sums of S-functions. The S-functions are tabulated in Chapter 14. The classical Levy solution is in Chapter 2 applied to a simply supported infinite plate strip subjected to a transverse line load, a moment line load, a transverse strip load, and a moment strip load. The solutions obtained contain the Fourier sine series coefficients of the load intensity as free parameters. In Chapters 3 to 11, Levy solutions are given for the eight types of loads (upon the simply supported infinite plate strip) shown in Fig.2.7 on p.39. The produced deflection w, the slopes w'x, w'y, and the section moments Mx, My, Mxy, at points(x,y) =(xia, eta a) are written as finite linear combinations of U-,: and V-functions. Parameters are the span width alpha, the plate stiffness D, Poisson's ratio v, the load centre coordinates (lambda alpha, mu alpha). and the load extensions 2delta alpha and 2epsilon alpha. The advantage of using S-functions in the plate analysis is elucidated in a discussion at the end of Chapter 3, see p. 46. Chapter 12 is concerned with practical calculations by use of the tables of S-functions. A computer program is described, and the manual calculations of a numerical application are presented in detail. An approximate solution is given in Chapter 13 for loaded infinite plate strips whose edges are either rigidly built in or elastically built in. Levy-s solution for the simply supported strip serve as a starting point. Two numerical examples are included.
