Book excerpt: "Little Elaine Sawchuk, a minister's daughter who grew up in the north end of Winnipeg with a need for attention and a love for singing, could see only the magic in show business. She pursued it after becoming an X-ray technician, she pursued it after becoming a wife and a mother, but as Elaine Steele, one of the best supper club singers in Canada, ... she had to pay a high price for the little bit of glamour and those moments of applause..." --Canadian Weekly, Toronto Star, May 8-14, 1965 Priests in the Attic, cast in Toronto during the tumultuous `60s through late`70s is a confessional story of lost faith, redemption and hope. This memoir is written through the power of reverie, a unique concept of the French philosopher Gaston Bachelard --the driving force behind this work. In The Poetics of Reverie, Bachelard describes his use of reverie to unearth emotional truth. All of us possess our own emotional truth and thus, each of us has a unique story to tell --but who am I, that anyone should be interested in my story? Let my book tell you: "I'm everyone who has ever taken a breath and marveled at the wonder and miracle of life. I'm everyone who has discovered their own finitude and shuddered at the concept of one day, being no more. I'm everyone who has suffered the pain of loss, the torment of regret, the desolation of loneliness, misgivings of the past and a fear of the future. I'm everyone who, through an anguished cry for help, receives the possibility of a new beginning and a miracle of new life through God's immeasurable grace.... Who am I? I am one with you --and all of us have a story to tell. This is mine."
Download or read book Civic Priests written by Marietta Horster and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Images and inscriptions on monuments can show us how priests and cult personnel saw themselves and were viewed by others, illuminating the social and political identity of these figures within their polis. Dedications and donations by cult personnel, and the honours that they earned, demonstrate their claim on the city’s attention and their financial power. The cityscape itself came to be shaped, in varying intensities and forms, by statues in honour of cult personnel, set up by relatives, fellow citizens and other groups. This set of cultural records, analysed in the studies presented here, is central to understanding how the roles of priests and priestesses were constructed in social and political terms in post-classical Athens. The approaches are both historical and archaeological, and elucidate the religious functions that the cult personnel fulfilled for the city, and their perception, by themselves and by others, as citizens of the polis.

Download or read book The Priests We Need To Save the Church written by Kevin Wells and published by Sophia Institute Press. This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While dissolute bishops and priests around the world grab headlines for their untoward words and deeds, too many other unfruitful priests minister as little more than glad-handing bachelors doing social service work. Top and bottom, is this the Church that Christ intended? Are these the priests we need? “No!” cries author Kevin Wells in these compelling pages that showcase how heroic priests can faithfully tread the narrow path of holy self-sacrifice first blazed by the apostles themselves. From scores of insightful interviews with modern priests, exorcists, seminary formators, and even disillusioned laity, Wells here draws forth a blueprint for priestly holiness that can once again fill our Church with priests abounding with sincere, supernatural faith, on fire with God's love, and moved by the irresistible impulse to save souls, no matter the cost to themselves. Reading this book will deepen your own faith and help you understand what all priests, by their vocation, are consecrated and called to be. Giving a copy to your parish priest will help him – and encourage him – as he strives to become a member of the small but growing contingent of holy priests we need.

Download or read book Autopsy in Athens written by Margaret M. Miles and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an exciting time to study in Athens. The “rescue” excavations of recent years, conducted during construction of the Metro system and in preparation for the 2004 Olympics Games, combined with major restoration projects and a new enthusiasm for fresh examination of old material, using new techniques and applications, brings new perspectives and answers on many aspects of the ancient city of Athens and life, politics and religion in Attica. The 15 papers presented here contribute new findings that result from intensive, firsthand examinations of the archaeological and epigraphical evidence. They illustrate how much may be gained by reexamining material from older excavations, and from the methodological shift from documenting information to closer analysis and larger historical reflection. They offer a variety of perspectives on a range of issues: the ambiance of the ancient city for passersby, filled with roadside shrines; techniques of architectural construction and sculpting; religious expression in Athens including cults of Asklepios and Serapis; the precise procedures for Greek sacrifice; how the borders of Attica were defined over time, and details of its road-system. In presenting this volume the contributors are continuing in a long tradition of autopsy – in the sense of 'personal observation' – in Athens, that began even in the Hellenistic period and has continued through the writings of centuries of travelers and academics to the present day.
