Book Christian Persecution Martyrdom and Orthodoxy

Download or read book Christian Persecution Martyrdom and Orthodoxy written by Geoffrey Ernest Maurice De Ste. Croix and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2006-09-28 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together seven seminal papers by the great radical historian Geoffrey de Ste. Croix, who died in 2000, on early Christian topics, with an especial focus on persecution and martyrdom. Christian martyrdom is a topic which conjures up ready images of inhumane persecutors confronted by Christian heroes who perish for the instant but win the long-term battle for reputation. In five of these essays Ste. Croix scrutinizes the evidence to reveal the significant role ofChristian themselves, first as volunteer martyrs and later, after the triumph of Christianity in the early fourth century, as organizers of much more effective persecutions. A sixth essay pursues the question of the control of Christianity through a comprehensive study of the context for one of theChurch's most important and divisive doctrinal decisions, at the Council of Chalcedon (AD 451); the key role of the emperor and his senior secular officials is revealed, contrary to the prevailing interpretation of Church historians. Finally the attitudes of the early Church towards property and slavery are reviewed, to show the divide between the Gospel message and actual practice.

Book When Christians Face Persecution

Download or read book When Christians Face Persecution written by Chee-Chiew Lee and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2022-02-17 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does the bible say about persecution of Christians? Many New Testament studies focus on persevering in faith to the end and responding even to perpetrators of persecution with love and forgiveness. Yet while there are unifying principles, the New Testament is filled with a range of experiences of and reflections on Christian persecution - texts that it is crucial to engage with in order to fully appreciate the bewildering array of experience and strongly held viewpoints amongst believers today. In When Christians Face Persecution, Chee-Chiew Lee explores the New Testament authors' theological understanding of persecution. She offers a thorough look at the biblical foundations, covering their responses to early Christian persecution, their evaluation of these responses, and how they encourage or persuade their recipients to persevere in their faith. Lee also brings these writings together to offer an integrated theology of facing persecution, reflecting on how the understanding of early Christian writers can be applied to the persecution of Christians today. When Christians Face Persecution is a valuable study that will enrich your knowledge of biblical teaching on persecution, and its continued relevance in the twenty-first century. It offers engaging theological synthesis as well as contextual reflection, and it invites you to a deeper understanding of the breadth of theological perspectives contained with the New Testament.

Book Christian Persecution in Antiquity

Download or read book Christian Persecution in Antiquity written by Professor of Church History Wolfram Kinzig and published by . This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries into the Common Era, Christians faced social ostracism and suspicion from neighbors and authorities alike. At times, this antipathy erupted into violence. Following Christ was a risky allegiance: to be a Christian in the Roman Empire carried with it the implicit risk of being branded a traitor to cultural and imperial sensibilities. The prolonged experience of distrust, oppression, and outright persecution helped shape the ethos of the Christian faith and produced a wealth of literature commemorating those who gave their lives in witness to the gospel. Wolfram Kinzig, in Christian Persecution in Antiquity, examines the motivations and legal mechanisms behind the various outbursts of violence against Christians, and chronologically tracks the course of Roman oppression of this new religion to the time of Constantine. Brief consideration is also given to persecutions of Christians outside the borders of the Roman Empire. Kinzig analyzes martyrdom accounts of the early church, cautiously drawing on these ancient voices alongside contemporary non-Christian evidence to reconstruct the church's experience as a minority sect. In doing so, Kinzig challenges recent reductionist attempts to dismantle the idea that Christians were ever serious targets of intentional violence. While martyrdom accounts and their glorification of self-sacrifice seem strange to modern eyes, they should still be given credence as historical artifacts indicative of actual events, despite them being embellished by sanctified memory. Newly translated from the German original by Markus Bockmuehl and featuring an additional chapter and concise notes, Christian Persecution in Antiquity fills a gap in English scholarship on early Christianity and offers a helpful introduction to this era for nonspecialists. Kinzig makes clear the critical role played by the experience of persecution in the development of the church's identity and sense of belonging in the ancient world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Persecutions: Being a Historical Exposition of the Principal Catholic Events From the Christian Era to the Present Time Written From an Unprejudiced Standpoint In presenting this volume to the public the author has but one idea to advance and but one object to attain, and that, to destroy intolerance, bigotry and ignorance. By Intoleration we mean, not a prohibition of rights and opinions, but the religious inconsistency and prejudice that exists in the political and social life of individuals. It is the Intoleration of the mind, the heart, the conscience. By Bigotry, - that obstinate and unreasoning condition in which an individual views his own belief and opinions, and opposes with narrow-minded intolerance the beliefs of others. It is a hated opposition, without reason or common sense. By Ignorance, - that pitiable condition which listens to fanaticism, believes assertions, and analyzes nothing. It is the father of intoleration, bigotry, and superstition. It is the foundation of religious persecution, of idolatry, and of heresy. It breeds confusion, oppression, and persecution. From the first establishment of Christianity to the present day it has been one constant struggle against unbelief, against opposition, and against persecution. In the past there is a wonderful history of the sufferings, the trials, and the steadfastness of those who have been faithful to God, to Christ, and to his Holy Word. To write these histories is beyond the power of man. Hundreds of volumes have been issued and yet we have recorded only a part of the great work of Christianity, and the awful afflictions it has borne. But not once in all those two thousand years has the faith in Christ been lost or broken. While It has apparently met reverses, yet not once was there a defeat. When God Made an Opportunity Cost, by Wellington Kanshimike, is an intriguing narration that provides readers with elements of the author's interpretation of Scripture. Kanshimike expounds on the enormous role that faith plays in the daily lives of Christians while endeavoring to understand the path God has chosen and the work of the Holy Spirit in preparing them to be presented as trophies to the city of glory. Heavily inspired to regularly attend a Christian camp known as Jumonville, located just outside Pittsburgh, Kanshimike conveys the spiritual awakening he experiences through the words he absorbs from the Bible. Exploring the concept of 'opportunity cost, ' Kanshimike delves into the price of the sacrifice of Christ and how that is manifested in the lives of believers with unique storytelling skill and anecdotal wisdom that will be sure to keep the pages turning.
