Book Medicinally Important Trees

Download or read book Medicinally Important Trees written by Aisha Saleem Khan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-07 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides researchers and advanced students associated with plant and pharmaceutical sciences with comprehensive information on medicinal trees, including their identification, morphological characteristics, traditional and economic uses, along with the latest research on their medicinal compounds. The text covers the ecological distribution of over 150 trees, which are characterized mainly on the basis of their unique properties and phytochemicals of medicinal importance (i.e., anti-allergic, anti-diabetic, anti-carcinogenic, anti-microbial, and possible anti-HIV compounds). Due to the incredibly large diversity of medicinal trees, it is not possible to cover all within one publication, so trees with unique medicinal properties that are relatively more common in many countries are discussed here in order to make it most informative for a global audience. With over 100 illustrations taken at different stages of plant development, this reference work serves as a tool for tree identification and provides morphological explanations. It includes the latest botanical research, including biochemical advancements in phytochemistry techniques such as chromatographic and spectrometric techniques. In addition, the end of each chapter presents the most up-to-date references for further sources of exploration.

Book Wild Fruits Composition Nutritional Value and Products

Download or read book Wild Fruits Composition Nutritional Value and Products written by Abdalbasit Adam Mariod and published by Springer. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wild fruits play an important role in mitigating hunger in the developing world. As a sustainable and natural food source in rural areas, these fruits have a strong effect on regional food security and poverty alleviation. This makes the utilization of wild foods incredibly important for native populations both in terms of food security and economics. There are many traditional methods for wild fruit harvesting, indigenous tree and plant domestication and cultivation passed down through generations that are sustainable and economically viable, ultimately contributing to a better quality of life for large sections of the developing world. To date there has not been a reference work focusing on the full scope of wild fruits from their growth and chemical makeup to their harvest, distribution, health effects and beyond. Wild Fruits: Composition, Nutritional Value and Products adequately fills this gap, expansively covering the utilization of multi-purpose wild fruits in regions worldwide. Effects on quality of life, food security, economics and health are extensively covered. Over 31 wild fruit species are examined, with individual chapters focusing on each species' phytochemical constituents, bioactive compounds, traditional and medicinal uses and chemical composition. Harvest, post-harvest and consumption methods are covered for each, as are their overall effect on the food security and economics of their native regions. This book is essential for researchers in search of a comprehensive singular source for the chemical makeups and cultivation of indigenous wild fruits and their many benefits to their native regions.

Book Anthropometry and Biomechanics

Download or read book Anthropometry and Biomechanics written by Ronald Easterby and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessment of the physical dimensions of the human body and application of this knowledge to the design of tools, equip ment, and work are certainly among the oldest arts and sciences. It would be an easy task if all anthropometric dimensions, of all people, would follow a general rule. Thus, philosophers and artists embedded their ideas about the most aesthetic proportions into ideal schemes of perfect proportions. "Golden sections" were developed in ancient India, China, Egypt, and Greece, and more recently by Leonardo DaVinci, or Albrecht Durer. However, such canons are fictive since actual human dimensions and proportions vary greatly among individuals. The different physical appearances often have been associated with mental, physiological and behavioral characteristics of the individuals. Hypocrates (about 460-377 BC) taught that there are four temperaments (actually, body fluids) represented by four body types. The psychiatrist Ernst Kretchmer (1888-1964) proposed that three typical somatotypes (pyknic, athletic, aesthenic) could reflect human character traits. Since the 1940's, W. H. Sheldon and his coworkers devised a system of three body physiques (endo-, meso-, ectomorphic). The classification was originally qualitative, and only recently has been developed to include actual measurements.

Book Butadiene and Styrene

Download or read book Butadiene and Styrene written by Marja Sorsa and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both butadiene and styrene are produced in high volumes; their combined annual production is 20 million tons. They occur together in many industrial and commercial products, including latexes, polymers, adhesives, and particularly in styrene-butadiene rubber tires. Styrene was classified in 1987 within IARC criteria as 2B (possibly carcinogenic to humans); 1,3-butadiene was placed in class 2A (probably carcinogenic to humans) at the meeting of a working group convened by IARC in 1991. This volume brings together the latest information about the toxic hazards of the two compounds. The focus of research on styrene seems to be its neurotoxicological effects and its potential carcinogenicity. Interest in 1,3-butadiene is much more recent and appears to be directed primarily towards species-specific differences in its carcinogenicity. Papers included in this volume were selected so that current data obtained by ambient and biological monitoring and on genetic toxicity and carcinogenicity are amply covered for both compounds. Seven main areas of research are covered: exposures to butadiene and styrene; estimation of internal doses received by exposed people; measurements of metabolites and of adducts with DNA and protein as markers of exposure; neurotoxicity and reproductive effects; genetic toxicity; carcinogenicity; and implications for public health. New results from epidemiological studies of subjects occupationally exposed to butadiene and to styrene are reported. Special consideration is given to the need for developing and validating biological markers of exposure to butadiene and to styrene in order to measure biological effects and susceptibility in human populations, so that adverse effects can be detected earlier and action taken to reduce public health risks. Information on the mechanisms of carcinogenic action is reviewed, since differences between species with respect to such mechanisms can have a major bearing on the extrapolation to human of findings of carcinogenicity in animals. These topics, representing the 'state of the art' with respect to scientific knowledge about the toxic manifestations and mechanisms of 1,3-butadiene and styrene are all covered in this volume.

Download or read book Rolling Back Malaria written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are more than 1.1 million deaths per year from malaria, mostly among children less than five years old. The disease is preventable and curable with available technologies, but , in the absence of strong and sustained malaria control efforts, coverage with effective interventions is low, particularly among the poor. Malaria impairs economic growth and human development in many of the World Bank's client countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Bank has the capacity to do a lot more than it has in malaria control, including financing, policy advice, and implementation support. It will support countries to develop and implement programs to (i) cost-effectively reduce morbidity, productivity losses in multiple sectors, and mortality due to malaria, particularly among the poor and among children and pregnant women; and (ii) address the challenges of regional and global public goods.
