Book The Oxford Handbook of Negation

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Negation written by Viviane Déprez and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 889 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, international experts in negation provide a comprehensive overview of cross-linguistic and philosophical research in the field, as well as accounts of more recent results from experimental linguistics, psycholinguistics, and neuroscience. The volume adopts an interdisciplinary approach to a range of fundamental questions ranging from why negation displays so many distinct linguistic forms to how prosody and gesture participate in the interpretation of negative utterances. Following an introduction from the editors, the chapters are arranged in eight parts that explore, respectively, the fundamentals of negation; issues in syntax; the syntax-semantics interface; semantics and pragmatics; negative dependencies; synchronic and diachronic variation; the emergence and acquisition of negation; and experimental investigations of negation. The volume will be an essential reference for students and researchers across a wide range of disciplines, and will facilitate further interdisciplinary work in the field.

Book Presupposition and the Delimitation of Semantics

Download or read book Presupposition and the Delimitation of Semantics written by Ruth M. Kempson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1975-07-17 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, first published in 1975, Dr Kempson argues that previous work on presupposition - whether in philosophy or linguistics - has been mistakenly based on a conflation of two different disciplines: semantics, the study of the meanings assigned to the formal system which constitutes a language, and pragmatics, the study of the use of that system in communication. The first part of the book deals generally with the nature of semantics in linguistic theory and its formal representation within a transformational grammar; Dr Kempson argues against incorporating the relation of presupposition within such a grammar. The second part provides a pragmatic account of the foundations of a theory of communication and its detailed application to the problems raised by presupposition. The book is intended for those studying both philosophy and linguistics and also for those sociolinguists and psychologists with a more general interest in the theory of communication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main argument of this book is that the notion of truth plays no role in speaker-hearers' interpretation of linguistic utterances and that it is not needed for theoretical accounts of linguistic meaning either. The theoretical argument is developed in the first part, while the second part supports it with cognitive relevance-theoretic, rather than truth-based, analyses of the 'concessive' expressions but, although and even if .

Book The Presupposition and Discourse Functions of the Japanese Particle Mo

Download or read book The Presupposition and Discourse Functions of the Japanese Particle Mo written by Sachiko Shudo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2002. This volume is part of the 'Outstanding Dissertations in Linguistics' series. This study focuses on the Japanese particle mo. The particle is probably best described as roughly equivalent to the English too or also, although the difference between the Japanese particle and the English counterparts will be soon revealed as an important part of this study. This study has two goals, which are related to one another. The first goal is to prescribe a monosemous account for what is presupposed by the usage of mo by investigating its constraints on the context. The second goal is to develop a model in which the discourse-level contribution of a linguistic form is explained by its instruction on the hearer's processing the sentence at the propositional level.

Book The Inheritance of Presupposition

Download or read book The Inheritance of Presupposition written by John Dinsmore and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1981-01-01 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents a procedural account of the so-called projection problem for presupposition. It is assumed that presuppositions embedded in complex sentences are subject to no projection rules or ad-hoc conditions whatever, but are in fact satisfied in appropriate contexts in a completely uniform way. It is demonstrated that the apparent filtering, alteration, or preservation of an embedded presupposition is in evry case a logical consequence of a general, independently motivated model of language processing and knowledge representation. It is shown in detail that turning the projection problem upside-down in this way leads to a far more explanatory and descriptively adequate accunt that any previously proposed.
