Bref : qui prend la parole, pour dire quoi et comment, lorsque la démocratie vient bouleverser les règles du jeu politique et discursif ? Telle est l'interrogation fondamentale qui est à l'origine de cet ouvrage. Le Bénin, petit pays côtier, a eu le privilège de servir de " laboratoire démocratique " : inventeur de la formule de la Conférence nationale, il a bénéficié d'une attention internationale considérable et s'est trouvé constitué en exemple. A l'opposé, le Niger, territoire immense et enclavé, a connu une transition politique mouvementée, émaillée de nombreuses violences, pâle copie du modèle béninois. Les journalistes de la nouvelle presse privée ont commenté, analysé, critiqué cette transition démocratique ainsi que leur propre rôle dans cette nouvelle distribution du pouvoir. Toutefois, les pesanteurs et contraintes historiques, socioculturelles, politiques et économiques ont limité la portée de leurs voix. En laissant une large place à leurs propos, ce livre permettra de répercuter plus amplement les discours foisonnants et souvent prémonitoires qui se déploient dans les capitales africaines mais restent trop souvent ignorés à cause de leur caractère " informel ". Comme il existe une économie " informelle " en Afrique, se développe également un débat politique " de la débrouille " qui ne s'étale dans aucune revue, ne s'introduit dans aucun colloque international, mais reste indispensable pour qui veut comprendre les enjeux actuels des transitions démocratiques.

This insurrectionary nakedness, often called genital cursing, owes its cultural potency to the religious belief that spirits residing in women's bodies can be unleashed to cause misfortune in their targets, including impotence, disease, and death. In Naked Agency, Naminata Diabate analyzes these collective female naked protests in Africa and beyond to broaden understandings of agency and vulnerability. Drawing on myriad cultural texts from social media and film to journalism and fiction, Diabate uncovers how women create spaces of resistance during socio-political duress, including such events as the 2011 protests by Ivoirian women in Côte d’Ivoire and Paris as well as women's disrobing in Soweto to prevent the destruction of their homes. Through the concept of naked agency, Diabate explores fluctuating narratives of power and victimhood to challenge simplistic accounts of African women's helplessness and to show how they exercise political power in the biopolitical era.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Africans and Westerners alike came to view dictatorship to be as much a part of the region’s social landscape as its grinding poverty. Yet the end of the Cold War and the sharpening of the economic crisis at the end of the 1980s have breathed new life into campaigns for democracy in Africa, shaking the foundations of many long-standing autocracies. In some cases, dramatic transitions took place, though the fate of the new democracies is far from certain. This volume explores the origins and evolution of political reform movements in several states of francophone Africa. The authors first make the case for the distinctiveness of francophone Africa, based on the influences of colonial history, language, and France’s contemporary role in Africa, then survey the challenges of reform, including the problems of transition from authoritarianism and consolidation of democratic regimes. Case studies of thirteen former French and Belgian colonies follow, organized by level of reform achieved: peaceful regime change, incremental reforms, repressed reform efforts, and reform in the midst of war.
