Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from President Lincoln, Self-Pourtrayed This volume represents (with a few trifling alterations and some additions) the uncurtailed text of three papers written for "Good Words," under the title of "President Lincoln Judged by his own Words," but which, through the exigencies of periodical publication, had to be compressed into two (August and December, 1865.) The main source from which the original papers were derived, was Mr. Raymond's earlier work, the "History of the Administration of President Lincoln" (New York, 1864), now superseded by his "Life and Public Services of Abraham Lincoln." Prom this latter volume I have borrowed, with but few exceptions, the additions now introduced. An earlier article by myself, also published in "Good Words," has also been appended. I need hardly say that the work in no sense pretends to be a biography of the late President, the greater part of whose life is known as yet only in outline to the public. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln's Own Stories Abraham Lincoln was a man of steel nerves, clear mental grasp, stanch convictions, and adamantine will, though withal a man of the gentlest and kindliest character; and his for bearance and patience were almost infinite. He was the genius of common sense. His steps forward were always well timed, and some one said that he was never oppressed with that curse of genius, the self-consciousness of petty things. He had the faculty of picking out the essentials of a question and allowing the non-essentials to take care of themselves. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Last Year of President Lincoln's Life On the morning of the second of February, 1865, between nine and ten o'clock, as I was ascending the stairs to the second story, to reach my room, I met Forbes, an intelligent servant, descending with a small valise in his hand, and I asked, Where are you going? Look ing up to see that no one was near, he whispered, Fortress Monroe, and hurried on. When I reached the upper hall I met the president with his overcoat, and going to my room looked out of the window and saw him quietly walking around the curved pavement which leads to Pennsylvania Avenue, while Forbes was following at a dis tance of two or three hundred feet, as his valet. Waiting for some time I then crossed the hall to the room of the principal secretary, Mr. John G. N icolay, and quietly said, The president has left the city What do you mean? He asked; and I replied, Just what I have said. Rising quickly, he opened the door which communi cated with the president's room, and was astonished to find the chair of Mr. Lincoln vacant. The president had received a dispatch which convinced him that it was proper to go to Fortress Monroe and confer with the rebel commissioners, Alexander Stephens, R. M. T. Hunterand J. A. Campbell, and at nine o'clock that morning sent the follow ing telegram to Secretary Seward, already there: Induced by a dis patch from Gen. Grant, I join you at Fortress Monroe. In front of him is a rough slab of wood in his hand is a short stick, which now and again he holds in the flames, and when the point of it is charred, he carefully forms letters and words with it on the board. Then, after he has thus covered the whole surface, he shaves Off the writing with a knife, and begins again. The little lad is Abraham Lincoln, and it is with such strange substitutes for pencil and slate as these that he who in course of time will become President of the United States is teaching himself penmanship. Let us glance at the humble home, and the sur roundings of Abraham at this time then we shall be better able to understand how it was that he was occupied in the way we have seen. Book Masterful Tributes to the Memory of President Lincoln

Download or read book Masterful Tributes to the Memory of President Lincoln written by William Jennings Bryan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masterful Tributes to the Memory of President Lincoln: And the Volunteer Soldier A generation ago - forty-two years - and within hail of the place where this great audience is assembled, Abraham Lincoln, by the hand of an insane murderer, was lifted from the ranks of strife to the place of eternal peace. For him to die was gain; he was at the end of a great strife where hard Fate had made him the nation's leader. He was saved by that death from all the perplexities and troubles of an unchartered future, all the experi ments and all the failures interfering with a fame absolutely secure by human standards. He passed from the heights Of vic tory, hardly upward. But rather onward to the place of glory. And it is well that here where he fell, by the capitol of the nation. That this assemblage, gathered from all the land and from every degree of citizenship, Should meet and mingle their sacred recol lections and praises before the fame of a foremost American. And it is well that the anniversary Should have fallen on this day, ordinarily held sacred to the worship of the Lord. God of Hosts. Our services in memory of Lincoln on this day can neither set the pulse of animosity anywhere beating in an American breast, nor can it be anything but acceptable on this day: for over and over again during that tumultuous time. When the sun was hidden in the American heaven, and all the passions from the nether world seemed loosed upon the surface of our Sorrowing earth, and when the tears of a mighty people fell ceaselessly for the brave and the true, and when it seemed as though Providence had deserted the cause, then the voice Of this untutored woodsman rings through the land. Calling the people again and again to the worship and tothanksgiving to the God and the Father. And in the wreck and welter of war, when Olden institutions seemed to be lost to sight, his was the voice that said to the thunder of guns and the shout ings Of captains, On the day of the Lord, ye shall be still. And from Moses until now no man has SO strongly spoken for the Sab bath as Lincoln when he ordered that cessation Of strife should. Whenever possible, occur on that day. And do you doubt, my fel low - citizens, that in through the ranks of the armies, those Of the gray as well as those of the blue, that this reverence Of the Great President for the sacred hour of Childhood's recollections had a mighty in uence? SO it is well that on the Sabbath, forty two years from the time when he laid down his burden, that a great, reunited people should honor his memory. But my duty is not to address you, but simply to guide your meeting. Those who are to come after me will tell you of this wondrous light. In be half of these, my comrades, I welcome you to this great and, I hope, holy occasion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
