Book excerpt: Third Edition. Antique quilts are both precious and fragile. Thoughtful care can help preserve them for generations to come. This comprehensive book by professional quilt restorer Ann Wasserman offers a wealth of practical information to aid both? collectors hoping? to find professionals to care for their collections, and? quilters and quilt? owners who want instructions they can follow in the home. The discussion begins with guidelines for assessing each quilt's condition. A chart delineates how factors such as appraisal, heirloom, and historical values, and age or vintage, can affect the choices of treatment. Repair of damaged areas can take one of two approaches - "restoration" or "conservation." Step-by-step instructions and illustrations are given for both approaches, including information on appropriate needles, threads, fabrics, and sewing stitches. The techniques presented are applicable to patchwork, appliqué, crazy, whole cloth, and other styles of quilts. Worn fabrics, holes and tears, re-backing, and re-binding are some of the types of damage covered.A chapter on the cleaning of old quilts discusses wet washing, drying, dry cleaning and vacuuming, and compares the relative safety of these methods. Instructions for safe ways to approach cleaning quilts are given. The discussion of quilt storage includes instructions for rolling or folding, and the merits of acid-free supplies. Storage environment is also important, including temperature and humidity levels and insect control.Displaying antique quilts includes instructions for hanging quilts, plus guidelines for lighting, location, and periodic vacuuming.A bibliography, lists of suppliers, conservation labs, appraisers, and restorers are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological diversity is considered one of today’s most urgent environmental concerns, yet the term was first coined only twenty-five years ago. Why did the concept of biological diversity so quickly capture public attention and emerge as a banner issue for the environmental movement? In this book, Timothy J. Farnham explores for the first time the historical roots of biological diversity, tracing the evolution of the term as well as the history of the conservation traditions that contributed to its rapid acceptance and popularity. Biological diversity is understood today as consisting of three components--species diversity, genetic diversity, and ecosystem diversity. Farnham finds that these three tiers coincided with three earlier, disparate conservation traditions that converged when the cause of preserving biological diversity was articulated. He tells the stories of these different historical foundations, recounts how the term came into the environmental lexicon, and shows how the evolution of the idea of biological diversity reflects an evolution of American attitudes toward the natural world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vanishing art of sustaining food and family is a look into the author's family. Tips, suggestions and guidelines for home canning and preservation along with family recipes, histories and memories of canning over the years. "There is not much difference when preserving food or preserving a family. Each takes PLANNING, CULTIVATION, PATIENCE, CARE and most of all it takes a great deal of LOVE. There is always room in the heart or in the larder to add one more "Something Special." It is not always guaranteed to be easy. No one says it will not be a lot of hard work. It often takes an adjustment of seasoning and for most things...becomes better with age. But the fruits of those labors are found on the faces of each loved one as the flavor (whether it be life or jam) is projected back in the way of a delighted smile. Preserving anything means a process in which that 'something' is extended. A family is an extension of the individual self to something greater, larger and with the capability to grow outside of itself. It means compromise and understanding of those new branches that entwine themselves into that garden. It does not mean that everything is always perfectly ripe with joy. In life, there are always trials, tragedies and heartbreaks, but it is the way in which we handle it. A weed in one garden is a medicinal herb for a tincture in another's. Our family is like any other typical American family. But we are fortunate to recognize how special that makes us and we strive to preserve our heritage and expand our horizons with an open mind and open-heart philosophy. How's that working for us, you ask? With a pinch of this and a smidge of that! Love & Light...K"

Book Preserving the Legacy

Download or read book Preserving the Legacy written by Allen G. Noble and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though only a relatively recent topic of worldwide discussion and interest, the concept of sustainable development traces its origins to the late eighteenth century, when concern for resource conservation and environmental integrity first arose. From this beginning, the concern for sustainable development progressively expanded from being purely local to having a regional and national relevance, and finally to being a global concern of import. Preserving the Legacy examines this expansion, while discussing several general approaches to the understanding and application of the concept of sustainability. Also discussed are such weighty issues as the balancing of development aspirations with environmental management in developing countries, and the means by which residents in an urbanizing region in a developed country can be induced to consider sustainable development as both a goal and a limiting factor in the conversion of agricultural land. Offering both real-world examples of sustainability issues and a forecast for the future of sustainability theory and practice, this fascinating volume will prove invaluable to scholars of the environment, geography, and urban planning.

Book excerpt: My Uncle Caleb I was just five or six years old. The last memory I have of him at our house was the only time I remember him with two legs. After that, we got news he had been shot by a man he thought was a friend. Shot at close range through his knee and half of his left thigh. Gangrene set in and took a long time to heal. He was in the hospital for quite some time. Dad brought him to our home with one leg and a crutch. He had to carry him across the high river to keep his cast and crutch dry. For the next few years we kids, who were older, helped take care of him. We would take the train to stay with him and Grandma for two or three weeks at a time. We would work the fields and river banks. Uncle couldn't get a job, so he started his own business making fishnets to sell to neighbors and keep himself busy. He would set traps in the winter to capture animals for skins and sell them to a Louisville fur company. Sometimes I would go to the woods with him. Those woods were full of all kinds of fur creatures. Uncle would tell me how he owned land up on the mountain, and one day he was going to cut trees from his property and have a houseboat made from the wood. Many years passed. I lived in Ohio and would take trips to visit my hometown when I could. I had heard Uncle Caleb had built his houseboat, so on one trip, I ventured to find Uncle Caleb's houseboat nestled under the river bridge. Boy, was he surprised when I knocked on his door. We had a wonderful visit--my last one. Later I went to his funeral on the mountain, where the trees that made his home were cut from. I am so glad I got that unplanned wonderful visit.

Book Transforming the Legacy

Download or read book Transforming the Legacy written by Kathryn Karusaitis Basham and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2004-10-27 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To serve the increasing numbers of individuals who have survived interpersonal and domestic violence, or as refugees, have sought asylum from political violence, armed conflict, or torture, Transforming the Legacy presents an innovative relationship-based and culturally informed couple therapy practice model that is grounded in a synthesis of psychological and social theories. This unique couple therapy model encompasses three phases of clinical practice: Phase I entails a process of establishing safety, stabilization, and a context for changing legacies of emotional, sexual, and/or physical abuse. Phase II guides reflection on the trauma narrative. The goal of phase III is to consolidate new perspectives, attitudes, and behaviors. Within these phases, the model—illustrated with rich case studies—focuses on specific issues, including: intersubjectivity between the client and clinician (such as transference and countertransference, vicarious traumatization, and racial identity development); intrapersonal, interactional, and institutional factors; the role of the "victim-victimizer-bystander" dynamic in the couple and therapeutic relationships; preserving a locus of control with clients; flexibility in decisionmaking regarding clinical processes; and specific practice themes, such as the composition of a couple, the role of violence, parenting, sexuality, affairs, dual diagnoses, and dissociation. A dramatic departure from formulaic therapeutic approaches, this biopsychosocial model emphasizes the crafting of specific treatment plans and specific clinical interventions to show how couple therapy can transform the legacies of childhood traumatic events for a wide range of populations, including military couples and families, gay lesbian/bisexual/transgendered couples and families, and immigrant and refugee couples and families. This thorough attention to issues of cultural diversity distinguish Transforming the Legacy from the current literature and make it an invaluable resource for clinicians in a wide range of professional disciplines.
