Book Great American Universities Classic Reprint

Download or read book Great American Universities Classic Reprint written by Edwin E. Slosson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great American Universities The unprecedented growth of American universities in recent years and their efforts to conform or to resist con formity with the demands of the times have effected such a transformation it is difficult to get a clear idea of their present condition and relative standing. A list of the larger universities arranged in the order of their size, wealth, scholarly productivity, or other objective criterion has surprises for almost every reader. He finds in the list and near the head of it names of institutions about which he knows little, and probably some of those whose names are most familiar to him are really very different from his conception of them, derived from their history or from early acquaintance. The alumnus who returns for the decennial reunion finds his Alma Mater greatly changed. Usually he is inclined to think that the change has not been altogether for the better in spite of the new buildings and crowds of students. He can, in fact, name the date when his Alma Mater began to decline and to lose the real old college spirit. It was ten years ago, when was gradu ated what is universally conceded by all its members to be the brightest class that ever came forth from its walls. Book The Colleges in War Time and After

Download or read book The Colleges in War Time and After written by Parke Rexford Kolbe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colleges in War Time and After: A Contemporary Account of the Effect of the War Upon Higher Education in America It is apparent to all that the higher educational system of the United States has suffered a war change. Following, as it has, immediately upon the reconstruction of educational ideals and standards which marked the past two decades, this war change has added the last touches to an academic condition so new to us as still to seem largely unfamiliar. Before our entrance into the world war we already realized the presence of a swift current of innovation, carrying collegiate education into uncharted seas of activity. Since April, 1917, this current has become a rushing torrent, sweeping before it all the old traditional landmarks from shores hitherto untouched by change. The curriculum, the semester division, the customs of student life, whole departments of learning - all these have been torn from their moorings and floated off into a remoteness from which, in their old form, they may never return. It is difficult, while living in the midst of such changes, to view them in their proper perspective. This volume can at best claim to be but a contemporary account of the conduct of higher education during the war period. It is perhaps impossible to draw from all the rapidly crowding events of the past two years the certain conclusions which a longer interval and a maturer study will allow. Often during the preparation of the following pages, events happened which necessitated a recasting of much subject matter. Download or read book The Trend in Higher Education Classic Reprint written by William Rainey Harper and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trend in Higher Education There need be no hesitation in saying that in the present times there is a trend in higher education. Nor is it difficult to point out some of the more conspicuous elements which characterize the movement that is taking place before our eyes. The philosophy of it is something more difficult to formulate. Indeed, such formulation cannot be expected for a long time. Meanwhile it only remains to study the various features which, from time to time, present themselves, and to indicate their individual significance. If a unity of purpose exists in the several papers collected in this volume, it will be found in the effort made to point out this trend in some of the higher educational movements of the day. I have not undertaken to note all of these features, nor, indeed, any considerable number of them, for the field is illimitable. Nor have I proposed to classify these elements as a basis for generalization. Some such work as this may be undertaken later. I have tried only to make a record of observations here and there which may perhaps contribute something to a preview of the tendency of things in this great field of intellectual activity.
