Book Present Day Problems of Christian Thought Classic Reprint

Download or read book Present Day Problems of Christian Thought Classic Reprint written by Randolph H. McKim and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Present-Day Problems of Christian Thought Attempts have been made by a. Certain class of writ em to use the religion of Buddha as a means of weak ening the force of the claim which Jesus of Nazareth makes for Himself, and for the religion of which He is the founder and the head. The argument may be stated thus Jesus claims to be the Light of the World, and to have established a religion which is the absolute religion, before which all other religions must give way, because it is true and they are false; it is super naturally revealed - they are of purely natural origin. But the rellglon of Buddha presents so many resem blances and, parallels to the religion of Christ, - in its ethical code, in its spirit, and in the life of its founder, that the exclusive claims of the latter cannot be main tamed; and every open-minded man must see that both of these great religions are divine revelations, or neither is. But it may be shown, in answer to this, that the alleged points of resemblance between the two reli gions, when closely scrutinized, are in many cases un real, in many others greatly exaggerated, and that the residuum of real likeness is totally insufficient to out weigh the contrasts, which are radical, fundamental. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Present-Day Problems of Christian Thought "Buddhism has exerted for centuries a refining influence on Oriental life. Even to-day, in some parts of Burma, it is the root of a singularly beautiful and simple life, flowering out into some of the purest virtues. But taking the East as a whole, Buddhism is almost an extinct spiritual force. It has hardened into a system, mechanised itself in prayer-wheels, tinkling bells, and vain repetitions. In China... it is not the active force in life... In its native home (India) Buddhism is no more. In Japan it has apparently helped to produce an externally refined character, beneath which, however, lie some very sinister traits and a general frame of mind which is aesthetic rather than religious." - From The Spectator, July 21, 1900, (p. 74.) "What a contrast this Healer of disease and Preacher of pardon to the worst, to Buddha with his religion of despair!... Christ's attitude is not one of zealous antagonism but of grand comprehension. His teaching sums up and contains the best thoughts of the wise in all ages and all lands. It is throughout in affinity with reason... Therefore Christianity is the Absolute Religion. It is indeed Gods final word to men." - Alex. Balmain Bruce. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of the Cross Atonement in the scheme of Christian theology. I have tried in these lectures to indicate the form which I think our interpretation of the Cross will take. We shall make central the thought that God suffers with His universe. One of the most urgent needs for theology at this moment is to think out the relation between the twin concep tions of Transcendence and Immanence. The Cross of Christ. Certainly Wins a new significance when set against the background of the divine immanence. But the Cross was no defeat, but a triumph. That is the cardinal message of Christianity. Hence the conception of a God who suffers with His world must be shown to be compatible with the conception of a God who in suffering is transcendently Victorious other wise the Cross spells weakness instead of power. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts for Thought: Discussions of Timely Topics Remembering that what was danger to the aspirant after unlawful power, was de fence and hope to the Republic, the characteristic of Cassius assumes another aspect. Men who thought too much to suit Caesar's convenience, were perhaps the very men of whom Rome stood most in need. The world has changed much since the days when the circle of lands was traced from the City of the Seven Hills as a centre; but men who think, and thought converted into power to bring things to pass, are still its greatest need. A new empire was founded by a Mightier than Caesar and in our new world, then undiscovered, there must be wrought out many of the problems whose solution shall bring the universal sway of the Christ. They are real problems, present questions: they challenge severe and earnest thought on the part of Citizen and Christian. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eucken and Bergson: Their Significance for Christian Thought While there is an excellent general introduction to Eucken's philosophy for English students that of his distinguished pupil, Professor Boyce Gibson, of Melbourne - and while we can supple ment our study of Bergson by such scholarly discussions as those of Mr. A. D. Lindsay and Dr. J. M'kellar Stewart, no attempt has been made as. Yet to present the thought of Eucken and Bergson in its specific bearing upon the problems of theology. It is with a view to supplying this lack in some small measure that this book has been written, and any apparently one-sided emphasis of certain aspects of their thought, as well as the omission of other aspects interesting and valuable in themselves, must be understood with reference to this controlling purpose.
