Book When the Past Is Always Present

Download or read book When the Past Is Always Present written by Ronald A. Ruden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-01-19 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Past Is Always Present: Emotional Traumatization, Causes, and Cures introduces several new ideas about trauma and trauma treatment. The first of these is that another way to treat disorders arising from the mind/brain may be to use the senses. This idea, which is at the core of psychosensory therapy, forms what the author considers the "third pillar" of trauma treatment (the first and second pillars being psychotherapy and psychopharmacology). Psychosensory therapy postulates that sensory input—for example, touch—creates extrasensory activity that alters brain function and the way we respond to stimuli. The second idea presented in this book is that traumatization is encoded in the amygdala only under special circumstances. Thus, by understanding what makes an individual resistant to traumatization we can offer a way of preventing it. The third idea is that traumatization occurs because we cannot find a haven during the event. This is the cornerstone of havening, the particular form of psychosensory therapy described in the book. Using evolutionary biological principles and recently published neuroscientific studies, this book outlines in detail how havening touch de-links the emotional experience from a trauma, essentially making it just an ordinary memory. Once done, the event no longer causes distress.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roger Sale’s Seattle, Past to Present has become a beloved reflection of Seattle’s history and its possible futures as imagined in 1976, when the book was first published. Drawing on demographic analysis, residential surveys, portraiture, and personal observation and reflection, Sale provides his take on what was most important in each of Seattle’s main periods, from the city’s founding, when settlers built a city great enough that the railroads eventually had to come; down to the post-Boeing Seattle of the 1970s, when the city was coming to terms with itself based on lessons from its past. Along the way, Sale touches on the economic diversity of late nineteenth-century Seattle that allowed it to grow; describes the major achievements of the first boom years in parks, boulevards, and neighborhoods of quiet elegance; and draws portraits of people like Vernon Parrington, Nellie Cornish, and Mark Tobey, who came to Seattle and flourished. The result is a powerful assessment of Seattle’s vitality, the result of old-timers and newcomers mixing both in harmony and in antagonism. With a new introduction by Seattle journalist Knute Berger, this edition invites today's readers to revisit Sale’s time capsule of Seattle—and perhaps learn something unexpected about this ever-changing city.

Botticelli Past and Present engages with this debate. The book comprises four thematic parts, spanning four centuries of Botticelli’s artistic fame and reception from the fifteenth century. Each part comprises a number of essays and includes a short introduction which positions them within the wider scholarly literature on Botticelli. The parts are organised chronologically beginning with discussion of the artist and his working practice in his own time, moving onto the progressive rediscovery of his work from the late eighteenth to the turn of the twentieth century, through to his enduring impact on contemporary art and design. Expertly written by researchers and eminent art historians and richly illustrated throughout, the broad range of essays in this book make a valuable contribution to Botticelli studies.

Book Pacific Futures

    Book Details:
  • Author : Warwick Anderson
  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 2020-05-31
  • ISBN : 0824884302
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Pacific Futures written by Warwick Anderson and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2020-05-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How, when, and why has the Pacific been a locus for imagining different futures by those living there as well as passing through? What does that tell us about the distinctiveness or otherwise of this “sea of islands”? Foregrounding the work of leading and emerging scholars of Oceania, Pacific Futures brings together a diverse set of approaches to, and examples of, how futures are being conceived in the region and have been imagined in the past. Individual chapters engage the various and sometimes contested futures yearned for, unrealized, and even lost or forgotten, that are particular to the Pacific as a region, ocean, island network, destination, and home. Contributors recuperate the futures hoped for and dreamed up by a vast array of islanders and outlanders—from Indigenous federalists to Lutheran improvers to Cantonese small business owners—making these histories of the future visible. In so doing, the collection intervenes in debates about globalization in the Pacific—and how the region is acted on by outside forces—and postcolonial debates that emphasize the agency and resistance of Pacific peoples in the context of centuries of colonial endeavor. With a view to the effects of the “slow violence” of climate change, the volume also challenges scholars to think about the conditions of possibility for future-thinking at all in the midst of a global crisis that promises cataclysmic effects for the region. Pacific Futures highlights futures conceived in the context of a modernity coproduced by diverse Pacific peoples, taking resistance to categorization as a starting point rather than a conclusion. With its hospitable approach to thinking about history making and future thinking, one that is open to a wide range of methodological, epistemological, and political interests and commitments, the volume will encourage the writing of new histories of the Pacific and new ways of talking about history in this field, the region, and beyond.

Book Past and Present of the Verbs to Read and to Write

Download or read book Past and Present of the Verbs to Read and to Write written by Emilia Ferreiro and published by Groundwood Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Emilia Ferreiro is one of the great thinkers in the Americas on the issues surrounding literacy. Three of her most important lectures are presented in this book. Her views have changed the systems of education in her own country, Mexico, and have had a radical impact on education in Brazil, where she is the recipient of the country's highest distinction. Her ideas have ideological and political implications for policies regarding publishing (including the publishing of textbooks), access to books and the development of readers all over the world." "Although poor countries have not overcome illiteracy, rich countries are finding that a basic education does not guarantee fully functional readers. While some of us are fluent in the language of hypertext, e-mail and the virtual pages of non-existent books, there are others who have not mastered newspapers or books." "If democracy is incompatible with an illiterate citizenry, full democracy requires an ability to read that goes beyond the deciphering of words. This ability is the right of children who will grow up as free citizens in a world where linguistic and cultural diversity are as important as biodiversity."--BOOK JACKET.
