Book Presbyterianism Its Relation to the Negro Classic Reprint

Download or read book Presbyterianism Its Relation to the Negro Classic Reprint written by Matthew Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Presbyterianism Its Relation to the Negro I have known the pastor of the Berean Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Matthew Anderson, for a number of years. We were in the Theological Seminary at Princeton together, since which time our friendship has deepened with increasing years. From the inception of his work in Philadelphia I have watched his career with the deepest interest. Too much cannot be said in praise of his self-sacrificing and indefatigable efforts in pushing forward the work to which, in the providence of God, he was called shortly after the completion of his Semi nary course. What he has accomplished has simply been marvellous. No one knows but those who have been most intimately associated with him, what this work has cost him in care and toil. By day and by night, for years, he went up and down the city of Philadelphia in search of means to help to pay for the beautiful building in which the congregation now worships. Often, I know, he must have been discouraged, often depressed and cast down, but his faith was in God, and so he kept on in the full assurance that success would ultimately crown his efforts. And success has crowned his efforts. The beautiful structure on South College avenue will ever remain a monument to his faith, and zeal, and earnestness, and a witness to the generosity of the many noble friends who came to his assistance, and who cheered him on by their gifts and kind words. When the last dollar was paid on the building. I remember how I was thrilled by the joyful announcement which came to me, from him, and how my heart rejoiced with him in the glorious consummation. I said then, well done, and I say now, a hundred times over, "Well done." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Presbyterianism: Its Principles and Practice The Presbyterian Church has no denominational Shibboleth with which to rally the masses, - which is both an advantage and a disadvantage. The advantage gained is that it prevents Presby terianism from being narrow and sectarian, but it is at a distinct disadvantage in contending with the bigot characterized by intense sectarian propaganda and proverbial zeal. The task of Presby terianism is to produce a loyal, intelligent membership, stalwart in faith and character, yet liberal towards all evangelical denomina tions. This attempt to accomplish the impossible is measurably successful in cultivating catholicity on the one hand and denomina tional loyalty on the other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Presbyterianism, and Its Services in the Revolution of 1776: A Discourse Among the countless events of history there are those which stand as milestones along the highway of human progress. Though, at the period of their occurrence, few discern their Significance and none their proper magni tude, vet, as time rolls on, their import emerges to View, and men see that God was in them. They make or mark a historic epoch; in them the pen dulum of time swings through one of its sweeping oscilla tions in them the clock of time strikes another hour. The event may occur in the recesses ofa human mind as when Galileo discovered the principle of the pendulum in the swaying to and fro of the chandelier in the old Cathedral at Pisa; or, as when the apple, falling from the tree in the orchard at Woolsthorpe, set the mind of Newton at work upon the great principle of gravitation: or, as when Morse, applying the principles of electricity, gave to the world the Electric Telegraph. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jenny Geddes: Or Presbyterianism and Its Great Conflict With Despotism This volume, in the aim and intent of the writer, is much more expository than polemical. Its object is to illustrate the character of, and to call attention to, the service rendered to the cause of God and man by the church system to which we hold, and not to attack other sister evangelical denominations. With them we have no quarrel. On the contrary, when we consider how God has blessed them - how many godly ones have lived, laboured and died among them - how many souls have been converted through their instrumentality, and thus the service rendered by them to our common Christianity - we are constrained to bid them God-speed. At the same time holding, as we assuredly do, that our Presbyterian system comes nearest of all to the scriptural standard, to the pattern showed in the mount, and that it is therefore best adapted for the nourishment and defence of the faith, we desire, as far as we may, to lead its adherents to deeper insight into its validity, to higher admiration of its beauty, and to greater enthusiasm in its maintenance and propagation. Book Presbyterianism for the People Classic Reprint

Download or read book Presbyterianism for the People Classic Reprint written by Robert P. Kerr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Presbyterianism for the People This little volume is not for theologians. There are many abler and more elaborate works on Pres byterianism written for them. It is for the people - the busy, earnest people, who have neither the time nor the taste for an extensive study of this subject, but who ought to know - at least, in a gen eral way - what Presbyterianism is, What it has been in the past, what it believes and teaches. In his pastoral work the author has often wished for such a book and he earnestly hopes that this one may help supply what he believes to be a real need of the Church. For it he asks the blessing of God and the favor of the people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
