In Reformed Resurgence, Brad Vermurlen provides a comprehensive sociological account of this phenomenon--known as New Calvinism--and what it entails for the broader evangelical landscape in the United States. Vermurlen develops a new theory for understanding how conservative religion can be strong and thrive in the hypermodern Western world. His paradigm uses and expands on strategic action field theory, a recent framework proposed for the study of movements and organizations that has rarely been applied to religion. This approach to religion moves beyond market dynamics and cultural happenstance and instead shows how religious strength can be fought for and won as the direct result of religious leaders' strategic actions and conflicts. But the battle comes at a cost. For the same reasons conservative Calvinistic belief is experiencing a resurgence, present-day American evangelicalism has turned in on itself. This book will open the door for further educational and liturgical discussions of the work of contextualization in churches around the world. Even though this study investigates a contextual pedagogy limited to the PCK, this task needs attention and study in a larger context beyond the PCK. The gospel is the worldwide truth that cannot be limited to a certain culture but becomes incarnated into each local culture. Therefore, this kind of contextual investigation between the gospel and culture will not be optional, but imperative to all churches.

After Margaret’s death in 1984 Arch retired to Louisville, Kentucky, where Social Security and a Presbyterian pension support what he calls “retread.” Because the Creator God is love, and God sent Jesus as the savior of the world, Arch has devoted these years to nonviolence and justice and efforts for a better life for people on earth. Arch’s retread career was greatly blessed by his second wife Wanda Rowe Myers, who died in 2006. Arch has labored stoutly against the militarism of the United States. He opposed President Reagan’s Contra war and joined Witness for Peace in Nicaragua. As missionary in residence at Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina he condemned Bush’s first Iraq attack as a war crime. He joined the 2001 Presbyterian Peace Fellowship delegation in Israel / Palestine. He criticizes U.S. complicity in Israel’s violations of international law and the human rights of Palestinians. Arch advocates the abolition of nuclear weapons and the death penalty, while supporting fairness for LGBTQ people and women’s freedom of reproductive rights. Now past ninety, Arch has reduced his activism but continues to write and advocate.
