Book excerpt: Our problems are the same. Couples are stuck in the same bad patterns. Individuals are stuck in the same bad habits that keep sabotaging their joy and expression. The obstacles that people are facing in creating a rich erotic life are the same bunch of obstacles. Just as the foundational information around what causes a bridge to stand or to collapse does not change from bridge to bridge, the foundational information about what makes partnerships thrive or fail does not vary wildly from partnership to partnership. Human nature has structure. Human eros has structure. And the glitches and the weaknesses and the misperceptions that keep tripping us up are the same ones across the population. This book is my attempt to articulate and organize these universal conversations regarding our emotional, relational and erotic lives.--- Om Rupani

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling author and a central figure in the field of meditation, Sharon Salzberg, uses ancient Buddhist wisdom to redefine love and experience it in a more profound way. You are a person worthy of love. You don’t have to do anything to deserve all the love in the world. Real Love is a creative tool kit of mindfulness exercises and meditation techniques that help you to truly engage with your present experience and create deeper love relationships with yourself, your partner, friends and family, and with life itself. Sharon Salzberg, a leading expert in Lovingkindness meditation, encourages us to strip away layers of negative habits and obstacles, helping us to experience authentic love based on direct experience, rather than preconceptions. Across three sections, Sharon explains how to dispel cultural and emotional habits, and direct focused care and attention to recapture the essence of what it is to love and be loved. With positive reflections and practices, Sharon teaches us how to shift the responsibilities of the love that we give and receive to rekindle the powerful healing force of true connection. By challenging myths perpetuated by popular culture, we can undo the limited definitions that reduce love to simply romance or passion, and give the heart a much needed tune-up to connect ourselves to the truest experience of love in our daily lives.

Book excerpt: Marcus Tempus is a writer based in Chicago and he had written a book about Chocolate and how some women preferred it to Sex called "Do not get between a Woman and her Chocolate". In doing the research for the book he had met Anastasia and they had agreed to go on a "Journey of Joy," and maybe fall in love. The book covers their travel experiences to Greece, Paris, London, Ireland, Marrakech and Malaysia. The travel writing is believed to be accurate and the places mentioned real. The fictional part of the book relates to the relationship that develops between Marcus and Anastasia as they become closer during their travels. A background theme is developed with Marcus who had recently fallen in love and it had changed his life. The relationship had not developed as he would have liked so he had sought the help of some spiritual advisors, and even consulted a Voodoo High Priestess, in order to understand why he had fallen in love so strongly and why he remained emotionally lost in this world of unrequited love. The advisors had told him that in a previous life, several hundred years ago, he had been a warrior named "Malin" and he had fallen in love with "Alesia" and that they were "Soul Mates" destined to meet again. Most of the advisors had told him that when he had fallen in love this was Malin and Alesia trying to connect in another life. The book explores the difficulty Marcus is experiencing in trying to reconcile all of these emotional and spiritual feelings with his no nonsense logical brain. He is left with the main questions, "Is Anastasia the latest visitation of Alesia and is she the Soul Mate that he has been seeking all along?"

Book The Psychology of Romantic Love

Download or read book The Psychology of Romantic Love written by Nathaniel Branden and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2008-01-31 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What love is, why love is born, why it sometimes grows, and why it sometimes dies. Have you ever wondered how romantic love evolves? What the difference is between mature and immature love? What role sex plays in romantic love, and whether love necessarily implies sexual exclusivity? And, most important, how can we make love last? Originally published in 1980, this updated edition of The Psychology of Romantic Love explores the nature of romantic love on many levels-the philosophical, the historical, the sociological, and the physiological. Nathaniel Branden explains why so many people say that romantic love is just not possible in today's world and-drawing on his experience with thousands of couples-finds that such love is still a possibility for anyone who understands its essence and is willing to accept its challenges. Branden sees it as a pathway not only to extraordinary joy but also to profound self-discovery. His vision of love is thoroughly appropriate to our time and grounded in our humanness.

Book Three Answers to the Question What Is Philosophy

Download or read book Three Answers to the Question What Is Philosophy written by Stuart Dalton and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-02-28 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy is like a party that started over 2,500 years ago and is still going strong. When you take a philosophy class, you’re invited to join this party; but walking into a party 2,500 years late can feel a little awkward. This book is meant to solve that problem. The best way to feel welcome is to focus on how funny philosophy is, simply because its ideals are so high that humans almost never manage to reach them. This book gives three answers to the question “What is philosophy?” (1) Philosophy is a conversation that has been going on for over 2,500 years which has been full of comedy from the beginning and will continue to be funny forever if we do it right. (2) Philosophy is a very awkward business that has always been on the verge of going out of business. (3) Philosophy is something that makes almost everyone write very badly. In addition to this three-act comedy the book also contains two practical guides to being happy and successful in philosophy classes.

Book excerpt: The last book on love you’ll ever need. Explore simple truths for going easier on yourself, embracing imperfections and loving your way to a better life through insightful stories and down-to-earth advice from artist and international best-selling author of Unlearn, Humble The Poet. We all want love. Everything we do is in pursuit of it. But as we count likes on social media and measure our worth by the numbers in our bank accounts, we are programmed to see love as something to earn or win. That programming obscures the simple truth that we ourselves are beautiful, infinite, eternal sources of love. Instead of seeking to be loved by the world, we must be love. With short chapters filled with insight, advice, and personal anecdotes from Humble’s own journey, this book is a guide to self-love that helps clarify your path inward toward the inherent love and value that is within each of us. Throw away old ideas that prevent you from realizing the love you’ve always had within you. Instead of earning more, achieving more, and gaining more attention, clear pathways for love to enter and flourish.

Book Philosophy in the Renaissance

Download or read book Philosophy in the Renaissance written by Paul Richard Blum and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Renaissance was a period of great intellectual change and innovation as philosophers rediscovered the philosophy of classical antiquity and passed it on to the modern age. Renaissance philosophy is distinct both from the medieval scholasticism, based on revelation and authority, and from philosophers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries who transformed it into new philosophical systems. Despite the importance of the Renaissance to the development of philosophy over time, it has remained largely understudied by historians of philosophy and professional philosophers. This anthology aims to correct this by providing scholars and students of philosophy with representative translations of the most important philosophers of the Renaissance. Its purpose is to help readers appreciate philosophy in the Renaissance and its importance in the history of philosophy. The anthology includes translations from philosophers from the thirteenth to the seventeenth centuries, and it ranges from works on moral and political philosophy, to metaphysics, epistemology, and natural philosophy, thereby providing historians and students of philosophy with a sense for the nature, breadth, and complexity of philosophy in the Renaissance. Each translation is accompanied by an introduction by a historian of Renaissance philosophy, as well as select secondary sources, in order to encourage further study. This anthology is a companion to Philosophers of the Renaissance, edited by Paul Richard Blum and published by Catholic University of America Press in 2010, which included essays on the writings of the same group of philosophers of the Renaissance: Raymond Llull, Gemistos Plethon, George of Trebizond, Basil Bessarion, Lorenzo Valla, Nicholas of Cusa, Leon Battista Alberti, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, Marsilio Ficino, Pietro Pomponazzi, Niccolò Machiavelli, Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim, Juan Luis Vives, Philipp Melanchthon, Petrus Ramus, Bernardino Telesio, Jacopo Zabarella, Michel de Montaigne, Francesco Patrizi, Giordano Bruno, Francisco Suàrez, Tommaso Campanella.

Book Love as Passion

  • Author : Niklas Luhmann
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2014-12-08
  • ISBN : 0745694454
  • Pages : 231 pages

Download or read book Love as Passion written by Niklas Luhmann and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-12-08 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important book Niklas Luhmann - one of the leading social thinkers of the late 20th century - analyses the emergence of ‘love' as the basis of personal relationships in modern societies. He argues that, while family systems remained intact in the transition from traditional to modern societies, a semantics for love developed to accommodate extra-marital relationships; this semantics was then transferred back into marriage and eventually transformed marriage itself. Drawing on a diverse range of historical and literary sources, Luhmann retraces the emergence and evolution of the special semantics of passionate love that has come to form the basis of modern forms of intimacy and personal relationships. This classic book by Luhmann has been widely recognized as a work of major importance. It is an outstanding contribution to social theory and it provides an original and illuminating perspective on the nature of modern marriage and sexuality.
