Book Equity Based Career Development and Postsecondary Transitions

Download or read book Equity Based Career Development and Postsecondary Transitions written by Erik M. Hines and published by IAP. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Former First Lady, Michelle Obama believes that every individual should have some type of postsecondary education or training beyond high school to achieve economic and personal success (Reach Higher Initiative, Better Make Room, 2019). Educational attainment (e.g., a high school diploma, college degree, or postsecondary training) provides career opportunities for advancement into leadership positions and benefits such as health insurance and retirement (Heckman, 2000). Additionally, an individual with a college degree can make over one million dollars more over a lifetime in salary than someone with a high school diploma (Carnevale, Cheah, & Hanson, 2015). Acquiring a college degree can lead to employment opportunities and is considered an asset in the U.S. economy (Washington, 2010). However, certain populations encounter barriers to attaining an education, particularly a postsecondary education, leading to a disparity in receiving the aforementioned benefits. Some of these populations include African American students, LGBTQ students, and students with disabilities. There is a dearth of information and research on providing guidance on implementation, research, and best practices in equity-based career development, college readiness, and successful postsecondary transitions for minoritized, at risk, or vulnerable populations. The editors of this volume invited authors with research and practice expertise around various student populations in preparing them for college and career readiness as well as postsecondary transitions. This book is the first of its kind to discuss career development and postsecondary transitions from an access and equity perspective. Further, this text serves as a call to action to ensure the United States’ most vulnerable populations has an opportunity to successfully transition into multiple postsecondary options after high school.

Framing higher education as a possible transition goal for all students with disabilities, Navigating the Transition from High School to College for Students with Disabilities supports the postsecondary interests of more than four million public school students with disabilities.

Book Preparing high school students with disabilities to successfully transition to postsecondary education

Download or read book Preparing high school students with disabilities to successfully transition to postsecondary education written by Jessica Marzi and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has shown that students with learning disabilities are not prepared to successfully transition to postsecondary education. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) recognizes the importance of postsecondary preparation and requires transition planning for eligible students. This project reflects the background of students with disabilities transitioning to higher education and utilizes the American School Counselor Association National Model to recommend improvements to the current preparatory methods for students with learning disabilities. Book Preparing Students with Disabilities for Post Secondary Life

Download or read book Preparing Students with Disabilities for Post Secondary Life written by Brianne M. Christensen and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students with disabilities have a variety of strengths, interests and needs. When these needs are identified and interests explored, students are more likely to experience a positive postsecondary outcome. Secondary educational programs, in order to help them accomplish this, should include six key elements into the students program and transition planning. These elements, identified in research help students reach their postsecondary goals. The intent of this study was to determine which of these elements are identified and implemented in secondary programs and transition planning and to what extent these elements adequately address the educational and employment needs of students with disabilities. A qualitative case study was utilized to analyze and evaluate one to four years’ worth of transition plans for fourteen high school special education students on the existence of these elements. In addition, parent interviews were conducted to identify the effects these elements had on their student’s post secondary experience. This study found, the six elements were implemented to varying degrees in each transition plan. Some elements were consistently identified including: assessment, student involvement and transition goals. Parent and agency involvement and training however were not identified in all plans and were found to varying degrees. Since all elements work hand in hand, it is important to include them, to the fullest extent possible in order to provide students the greatest opportunity for success. Parent interviews confirm these findings which suggest in order to help set up students for success, all elements need to be implemented into the secondary educational program. This study is limited by the small case sample but hopes to contribute to the existing literature that implementation of the key elements provide students with disabilities the best opportunity for a successful post secondary outcome.

Book Evaluating the Impact of Interventions That Promote Successful Transitions from High School Research Brief

Download or read book Evaluating the Impact of Interventions That Promote Successful Transitions from High School Research Brief written by Michael Bangser and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research brief examines the challenges and opportunities presented in evaluating whether an intervention achieves defined goals of increasing students' educational attainment, employment, and earnings after high school. The report concludes that evaluations should: (1) Distinguish between gross outcomes (such as how many young people attend college after high school) and net impacts (the extent to which these outcomes were caused by the policy or practice being studied, rather than by other factors;(2) Explore whether policies and practices have different net impacts for certain subgroups within the high school population; (3) Test policies and practices on a large scale and in a variety of real-world settings; (4) Include analyses of program implementation and cost; and (5) Acknowledge that certain policies and practices can make a significant difference for at-risk students even when the outcomes for these students do not appear favorable in an absolute sense. The report recommends that policymakers, administrators, and researchers work together to determine which interventions are most effective in preparing students for post-high school transitions. Expanded use of random assignment studies should continue, along with efforts to strengthen alternative, quasi-experimental methodologies. Net impact studies should be conducted at scale in real-world settings and be accompanied by analyses of program implementation and costs. These approaches will provide a better understanding of the prospects for widespread replication of successful efforts. Although acknowledging the challenge of conducting such evaluations, the author advocates that it can also improve high school accountability. (Contains 4 endnotes.).

But with the proper preparation, students can enjoy success! This practical guide explains how the system for accommodations works, describes students' rights and responsibilities within that system, and employs the voices of seasoned professionals and college students to explain the skills and strategies students should develop while they are in high school to ensure success when they reach college. As a bonus, it also offers answers to questions students with disabilities frequently ask about disclosing their disability in the admissions process.

Book SECONDARY TO POSTSECONDARY TRANSITION FOR STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DIFFERENCES STUDENT AND TEACHER PERCEIVED EFFECTIVENESS OF A SERIES OF NON COGNITIVE TRANSITION CURRICULUM MODULES

Download or read book SECONDARY TO POSTSECONDARY TRANSITION FOR STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DIFFERENCES STUDENT AND TEACHER PERCEIVED EFFECTIVENESS OF A SERIES OF NON COGNITIVE TRANSITION CURRICULUM MODULES written by Ronda Sortino and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With increasing frequency, students with learning differences are transitioning out of high school ill-prepared for the rigor and freedom of a postsecondary setting. The transition from high school to college is marked by the transfer of responsibility for accessing and monitoring services and performance. The familiar model of special education services at the high school level changes significantly at the postsecondary level, shifting responsibility from the K-12 school system to the individual student. Research is limited in specific transition processes that manifest into successful transitioning of students with learning differences from secondary to postsecondary educational institutions. This study sought to investigate the quality of a series of non-cognitive transition modules developed to prepare students with learning differences for the postsecondary education setting. For purposes of this research, the terminology learning differences was used, except when referring to learning disabilities as it relates to federal law. Though transition planning for students with learning differences has long been discussed and supported by federal mandate, there are shortcomings in the literature as to static or longitudinal studies supporting or refuting practices that support transitioning of students with high incidence disabilities from secondary to postsecondary settings. This study served to provide a systematic, non-cognitive curricular approach to preparation for students with learning differences. The purpose of this study was to determine teacher and high school student perceived effectiveness of a series of non-cognitive transition curriculum modules developed to prepare high school students with learning differences for a postsecondary educational setting. Using a mixed-methods explanatory research design, the researcher collected quantitative data that would be expanded upon by further collection of qualitative data. Using the qualitative data to explain and extend the paradigm created by the presentation of the quantitative data, the research effectively answered the proposed study questions and provided insight into the preparedness of secondary students with learning differences for transitioning to a postsecondary education. Further implementation in secondary settings, with continuous feedback from teachers and students for appropriateness and effectiveness, will provide a sustainable transition curriculum designed to help students with learning differences experience a positive transition to postsecondary education.

Book Transition from High School to College Research Brief

Download or read book Transition from High School to College Research Brief written by Howard Johnston and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does the literature say about effective transition between the high school and post-secondary education? A disturbing number of students leave college without completing their degree or earning the credential they sought. This problem, which is especially acute for poor, minority and rural students, results in a colossal waste of talent, money, and potential productivity. Effective strategies to promote college success must include attention to academic, social-psychological, financial, and practical impediments to college completion. Fortunately, schools can play an important role in preparing students to succeed, and the earlier they start that process, the more likely it will have a positive effect on their students. Programs offered as early at the middle school have been shown to make a difference in the success rates of these students when they reach college. A list of references and online resources is included.

Book Bridging the Future to Postsecondary Readiness

Download or read book Bridging the Future to Postsecondary Readiness written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing education advances society. For every student, our educational system should provide a seamless transition from one level to the next until a degree or certificate is earned that reflects a mastery of skills needed to secure employment. This helps prepare each individual for a successful life after exiting the educational system and greatly benefit our society. Today, however, many students graduating from high schools are not ready for a postsecondary education. Transitioning students from high school to college is a complex process that requires many different approaches. Students making this transition are finding it more difficult to enter and succeed at a higher level of education because of the complexity of this process. Preparing students for postsecondary options is critical for every student. Students from low-income families and some ethnic and racial minority groups are most dependent on the ability of their high school to prepare them properly for college success (Conley, 2010). In what ways can schools better prepare students for postsecondary success? This study focuses on the creation of a Postsecondary Readiness Guidebook (PRG) which provides a comprehensive approach to help educational leaders prepare students for postsecondary success. The guidebook uses a problem-based learning design and follows the research and development process. The guidebook was field tested by educational leaders in a K-12 public school though a workshop using a qualitative methodology. During the field-testing of the guidebook, data were collected through assessments, interviews with educators, and questionnaires completed by educational leaders at the school. Data were analyzed using inductive coding, facesheet coding, enumeration, and typology. The findings of the study reveal that using a guidebook with a comprehensive approach to postsecondary preparedness can help school leaders prepare students for postsecondary success. Educational leaders in the school collectively focused on best practices and programs aimed at preparing students for postsecondary options through the use and interaction of the PRG. The guidebook gave them a compass for which to navigate the complex process of preparing students for postsecondary success.
