Book excerpt: This thesis explored whether a link exists between blended learning and student self efficacy for community college students, as perceived by faculty teaching blended courses at these institutions. Several previous studies investigated aspects of this topic, but these studies focused on gains in student learning; whether or not students liked blended learning; or whether or not faculty viewed blended learning as achieving learning goals. While some of the research clearly indicated that blended learning results in learning gains that are at least comparable to traditional face-to-face and online learning environments, faculty opinion of blended learning's benefits was often inconsistent with these results, and some faculty have expressed less than favorable opinions of blended learning. The current study examined Bandura's theory of self efficacy, using Vygotsky's constructivism and Dede's online theory (which includes blended learning) as theories that support Bandura's theoretical foundation, to determine whether faculty found that blended learning increased student self efficacy. The analysis of faculty perception was explored through interpretative phenomenological analysis as a qualitative prism of faculty opinion. The study revealed that faculty believed students were not adequately prepared for blended learning; that student and faculty engagement, subjects taught, and faculty support were critical factors in student self efficacy and course success; and that students and faculty often found blended learning required the most effort of any course delivery mechanism. The growing use of blended learning in postsecondary education suggests student and faculty engagement should be considered when preparing coursework and student participation orientation.

Book excerpt: Abstract This study focuses on the use of the blended learning approach in the Saudi EFL context, investigating the advantages and disadvantages of its application in Saudi Electronic University, against a more conventional approach used at Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University. This study also investigates perceptions of students concerning this particular approach. The opinions of instructors are also surveyed in order to identify the challenges and obstacles that they have found in employing it. The study also examines possible differences in performance by comparing five colleges where the approach has been used. For this purpose, 475 students and 12 instructors participated in this study who were studying or working in either SEU or Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University during the first semester of the academic year 1439/1440 from Riyadh female campus. The findings indicated that the students’ results are better using the blended learning approach in their listening performance, also there is a statistically significant difference in the students’ satisfaction in the listening course between the conventional method which is used at Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University and the blended learning approach at Saudi Electronic University in favor of blended learning approach at the SEU, and there is a strongly statistically significant difference in students’listening performance between colleges in favour of college of science and theoretical studies. Finally, the study suggests that further research should be conducted on the use BL in teaching other language skills such as, reading, speaking and writing. Book excerpt: This study was completed to find if there were significant differences in the level of conceptual familiarity of blended learning, the level of technological self-efficacy, and the level of implementation of blended learning best-practices between teachers who have Master's degrees and teachers who do not have Master's degrees. The level of teacher education was used as the independent variable to divide the group and be able to perform cross-tab contingency calculations using Chi-Square to search for significant differences. The only significant difference found in the research was in the level of technological self-efficacy of the teachers. It appears the higher the level of education of a teacher, the higher their level of technological self-efficacy. The level of education of a teacher does not however appear to impact their level of conceptual familiarity with blended learning, or the implementation of identified blended learning best-practice components. The sample size for this study was small, so the results should be reviewed with the understanding that the data could be invalid. More research on the subject needs to be done to produce legitimate conclusions.

Book excerpt: This qualitative case study examined and explored perspectives of teachers regarding the effectiveness of a locally designed and developed high school blended learning initiative. This case study also provided insight into teachers' perceptions regarding factors that affect the implementation of a blended learning initiative as well as delving into teacher perceptions related to the effectiveness of professional development provided for teachers of blended courses. Teachers from one public high school in central Pennsylvania, all teaching at least one blended course, completed a researcher-designed Likert-scale statement survey, provided answers to open-ended questions, with a limited number participating in interviews which were conducted by an independent interviewer. The results of this study revealed that teachers in the school where this research was conducted had favorable perceptions regarding the effectiveness of a locally designed and developed blended learning initiative. The findings also identified variables that affect the implementation of a blended learning initiative and acknowledged the importance of flexible scheduling and ability for teachers to collaborate on a regular basis as variables that would provide structure to support a blended learning initiative. Although the results of this study regarding district professional development support for teachers delivering instruction in a blended fashion were promising, there was an indication that professional development needs to be continuous and ongoing after implementation.
