Book excerpt: This qualitative case study examined principals’ perceptions of professional development through a coaching model to identify key influence factors and outcomes. Using qualitative data sources (interviews and the Principal Self-Efficacy Perception Survey), the study examined the self-efficacy perception of principals who participated in the National Center for Urban School Transformation A+ Plus Principal Network and Coaching Model program in two Southern California districts. The purpose was to discover if there was a direct connection between principal self-efficacy and professional development that included mentor and coaching programs. The study examined processes for adequately preparing principals to be both effective instructional and transformational leaders. The study aimed to provide districts with structures to support and develop the transformational and instructional leadership of principals while further contributing to the research on principal professional development. Five key themes emerged from the data analysis: (a) Communication; (b) Collaboration (principal networks); (c) Coherent Systems; (d) Validation and Trust; and (e) Professional Learning. These themes demonstrated the significance of coaching for principals to improve instructional and transformational leadership and increase selfefficacy

Book excerpt: Current educational reform measures in the U.S. are inextricably linked to the contributions of teachers in transforming under-performing urban schools. As teachers assume important leadership roles to accomplish those ends, changing paradigms of urban school leadership have emerged. Teach for America (TFA), an alternative certification program preparing teachers to eradicate urban and rural inequities, posits that its Teaching as Leadership training and support model prepares corps members to become transformational classroom leaders, thereby leading to dramatic transformations in the achievement and lives of students. The present research investigation examines the construct of transformational classroom TFA employed by to achieve educational, social and organizational goals. Case study research methodology, informed by phenomenology, was used to conduct the study. Study participants included eight former TFA corps members from its 2010 cohort who have remained as classroom teachers in the same Midwestern urban city. Also interviewed were administrators from schools where corps members were placed. In-depth interviewing elicited data regarding participant beliefs about self, their preparation to teach, and their teaching and leadership experience in urban schools. Informed by transformational leadership and constructive development theories, four major findings resulted from the study. First, the study found that participants' commitment to their learning and development as teachers was evidence that they embraced the concept of classroom leadership and represented transformational classroom leadership in action. Participants' reports of their involvement in various school and community roles further supported the finding that participants were equally committed to exerting leadership beyond the classroom and did so notwithstanding TFA's strong focus on their classroom efforts. Correspondingly, the data further suggested that context was significant in shaping participants' development as teachers and as leaders. Lastly, data analysis highlighted the different undertandings of leadership held by TFA, corps members and their employing principals. The study's findings have implications for understanding the role of classroom leadership vis à vis teacher leadership, the training of teacher leaders, the admission and curriculum decisions for teacher preparation programs, and the leadership of school administrators in educational partnerships.
