Book Thin Film Deposition of Pure and Doped TiO2 by RF Magnetron Sputtering for Visible Light Photocatalytic and Optoelectronic Applications

Download or read book Thin Film Deposition of Pure and Doped TiO2 by RF Magnetron Sputtering for Visible Light Photocatalytic and Optoelectronic Applications written by Houssam Abdullber Fakhouri and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three different ways to dope nitrogen into TiO2 by means of RF reactive sputtering was compared, and the structural, optical, and photo-active performance of these materials were explored. First, multi-layered thin films of TiO2 and TiN were prepared by sputtering a titanium target and alternating oxygen and nitrogen reactive gases in the deposition chamber. The total thickness of each multi stack was kept constant while the overall composition of the films (TiN to TiO2 ratio) was varied between 5% and 30% and the number of TiN/TiO2 bi-layers was increased from 9 to 45. Secondly, we prepared N-TiO2 by introducing oxygen and nitrogen reactive gases simultaneously during the depositions. The ratio of oxygen to nitrogen was systematically changed in order to control the concentration of nitrogen incorporation into the films between 0% and 6%. Finally, we prepared TiN thin films and oxidized them at different temperatures and for several time intervals. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that nitrogen was successfully doped into all of the TiO2 films in substitutional and/or interstitial sites depending on the deposition conditions. The variance in the concentration and position of the nitrogen doping had a significant effect on the optical, structural and photoactive properties of the three types of N-TiO2 films. The parameters of sputtering deposition were optimized using both plasma diagnostics and Design of Experiments. This study has shown the desirable ability to control several important physical and chemical characteristics of N-TiO2 films, with considerable promise for many applications.

Book Growth by Radio Frequency Sputtering and Characterisation of Rare Earth Doped Wide Bandgap Oxides

Download or read book Growth by Radio Frequency Sputtering and Characterisation of Rare Earth Doped Wide Bandgap Oxides written by Rajesh Pandiyan and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis reports the results of an experimental research on rare earth ion-doping effects on the structural, chemical, optical and near-infra-red photoluminescence properties of wide band gap oxide films. The aim of the work was to develop materials with good photoluminescence properties, which can be applied to increase the photovoltaic conversion efficiency of crystalline Si-based solar cells, through the increase of the most efficient and useful fraction of the solar spectrum which hits the cells, thanks to a photon frequency down-shifting process. Neodymium trivalent ion (Nd3+) was used as dopant of TiO2 and ZnO thin films. The films, with different Nd concentrations were grown onto quartz by RF plasma co-sputtering and annealed at different temperatures (400°-800°). Different film architectures were investigated for their photoluminescence properties. Structural changes such as phase transformation from anatase to rutile, internal strain building and lattice distortion due to Nd3+ incorporation in titania, correlated with optical changes, were evidenced. Exciting titania and zinc oxide matrices with optimal Nd concentrations, with ultra-violet (UV) light energies equal to or above their gap values resulted in an efficient frequency down-shifting from UV to near-infra-red emission. The joint study of the vibrational, chemical and structural properties of the doped films allows the understanding of the excitation energy transfer process between the matrix to the ion, where self-trapped excitons can be involved. To conclude this study, the doped films were tested as down-shifter layers onto a Si-solar cell where they gave promising results. They were also tested for their photoactivity with methylene blue, showing their inhibitor effect on the photo-degradation of this organic dye molecule.

Book Sol Gel Synthesis and Characterization of Neodymium Ion Doped Nanostructured Titania Thin Films

Download or read book Sol Gel Synthesis and Characterization of Neodymium Ion Doped Nanostructured Titania Thin Films written by Andrew Burns and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nd doped TiO2 nanostructured thin films were prepared by sol-gel technique on quartz and Si substrates using TiCl4 precursor. As-deposited amorphous films were annealed to form anatase phase in the thin films. The film grain size increased with annealing temperature. Above 800 deg C, rutile began to segregate and the grain size decreased slightly. The photodegradation of 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) was studied. Doping TiO2 with Nd(+3) reduced the photodegradation time. The difference in the ionic radii of Nd(+3) and Ti(+4) and the oxygen affinities of Nd and Ti were responsible for this effect. These differences help promote electron trapping, thereby increasing the lifetime of the holes which are responsible for the oxidation of 2-CP.
