However, the majority of attention has been directed towards the macrofauna, with little attention being paid to the microfauna. The microfauna and stratigraphy of Stenomylus Quarry of Agate Fossil Beds is examined in this study to define the paleoenvironment and confirm the currently assigned Arikareean NALMA (North American Land Mammal Age). The abundance of small-scale ripple marks and laminations at Stenomylus Quarry provide evidence of a low-energy fluvial environment, which is supported by the very fine-grained, subangular to subrounded sandstone grains. Regularly spaced resistant ledges within the sandstone are interpreted to be a result of subaerial exposure during times of drying, indicating that Stenomylus Quarry experienced wet and dry seasons. Fauna discovered at the quarry, which largely consisted of heteromyid and geomyid rodents, indicates a relatively open environment that was hot and arid during much of the year. Other taxa, including gastropods, bivalves, iguanids, sciurids, and a lipotyphlan support this paleoenvironment. When compared to other confirmed Arikareean fossil localities, Stenomylus Quarry possessed many taxa in common with these localities, confirming that Agate Fossil Beds is Arikareean. Further studies on the microfauna of Agate Fossil Beds will likely strengthen this conclusion.
