Book Preliminary Principles and Guidelines for Archiving Environmental and Geospatial Data at NOAA

Download or read book Preliminary Principles and Guidelines for Archiving Environmental and Geospatial Data at NOAA written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-06-15 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) collects and manages a wide range of environmental and geospatial data to fulfill its mission requirements-data that stretch from the surface of the sun to the core of the earth, and affect every aspect of society. With limited resources and enormous growth in data volumes, NOAA asked the National Academies for advice on how to archive and provide access to these data. This book offers preliminary principles and guidelines that NOAA and its partners can use to begin planning specific archiving strategies for the data streams they currently collect. For example, the book concludes that the decision to archive environmental or geospatial data should be driven by its current or future value to society, and that funding for environmental and geospatial measurements should include sufficient resources to archive and provide access to the data these efforts generate. The preliminary principles and guidelines proposed in this book will be refined and expanded to cover data access issues in a final book expected to be released in 2007.

Book Environmental Data Management

Download or read book Environmental Data Management written by Carl Oppenheimer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the world a staggering amount of resources have been used to obtain billions of environmental data points. Some, such as meteorological data, have been organized for weather map display where many thousands of data points are synthesized in one compressed map. Most environmental data, however, are still widely scattered and generally not used for a systems approach, but only for the purpose for which they were originally taken. These data are contained in relatively small computer programs, research files, government and industrial reports, etc. This Conference was called to bring together some of the world's leaders from research centers and government agencies, and others concerned with environmental data management. The purpose of the Conference was to organize discussion on the scope of world environmental data, its present form and documentation, and whether a systematic approach to a total system is feasible now or in the future. This same subject permeated indirectly the Stockholm Conference on the environment, where, although no single recommendation came forth suggesting a consolidated environmental data pool, bank or network, each recommendation indicated that substantial environmental data needed to be obtained or needed to be pooled and analyzed from existing data sources.

Book Environmental Data Analysis

Download or read book Environmental Data Analysis written by Carsten Dormann and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-20 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Data Analysis is an introductory statistics textbook for environmental science. It covers descriptive, inferential and predictive statistics, centred on the Generalized Linear Model. The key idea behind this book is to approach statistical analyses from the perspective of maximum likelihood, essentially treating most analyses as (multiple) regression problems. The reader will be introduced to statistical distributions early on, and will learn to deploy models suitable for the data at hand, which in environmental science are often not normally distributed. To make the initially steep learning curve more manageable, each statistical chapter is followed by a walk-through in a corresponding R-based how-to chapter, which reviews the theory and applies it to environmental data. In this way, a coherent and expandable foundation in parametric statistics is laid, which can be expanded in advanced courses. The content has been “field-tested” in several years of courses on statistics for Environmental Science, Geography and Forestry taught at the University of Freiburg.

Book Preliminary Environmental Assessments of Known Geothermal Resource Areas in the United States

Download or read book Preliminary Environmental Assessments of Known Geothermal Resource Areas in the United States written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic purpose of the Geothermal Overview Project is to identify, summarize, and assess the environmental issues of the top priority KGRAs from among the approximately 40 KGRAs currently identified by the Division of Geothermal Energy, DOE, as having high possibilities for commercial development. The Geothermal Overview Project addresses issues pertaining to air quality, ecosystems quality, noise effects, geological effects, water quality, socioeconomic effects, and health effects. For each KGRA the following functions are accomplished: identification of key issues; inventory of all available data; analysis and assessment of available data; and, identification of what additional information is required for adequate assessments. Studies at the Geysers-Calistoga KGRA in Northern California are used as an example.
