Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preliminary Report on Coal Stripping Possibilities in Illinois In spite of the large number of attempts at strip mining that have been recorded in this State, at no time have there been many opera tions carried on simultaneously. In recent years, the number has somewhat increased, and the latest report of the Department Of Mines and Minerals1 lists a total of eighteen pits. Table 1 shows that stripping was confined to six counties Fulton, Jackson, Perry, Saline, Vermilion, and Williamson. The total tonnage so mined, tons, was only tons more than was produced in the same period by a single deep mine in the State.' Stripping is as yet a relatively unimportant factor in the coal industry of the State. The restriction, prior to 1924, of these operations to three coal beds in as many counties is readily understood, when it is remembered that throughout the experimental stage it was necessary that the trials be made where conditions were fairly well known. This was essen tial not only from the standpoint of operation, but also from that of marketing. With increased stability of the stripping business has come a demand for increased opportunity for stripping, which means the search for and development Of new territory, and involves new coal beds as well as extended markets. In the calendar year, 1911, the coal mines in Illinois produced tons, and employed workmen. Under the practice which has developed naturally, in response to competitive conditions, possibly 50 per cent of the coal in. The ground has been lost, and a large part of the mined portion wasted by its improper or inefficient use. Moreover, 2 to 3 lives have been lost annually for every miners employed, or 3 to 4 for each million tons produced, and the number of serious injuries has been even greater. This condition is due to the rapid expansion of the coal mining industry, and the condition under which such mining is carried on in the United States. Mining is, however, but one of the industries in which such records have been made. It is believed that more efficient mining methods will save a large por tion of the coal resources of the State, cut down the present rate of deaths and accidents, and make for safer mining investments.
