Book The Implications of Predator Management for an Endangered Shorebird

Download or read book The Implications of Predator Management for an Endangered Shorebird written by Gabrielle Beaulieu and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Predators are a threat to many ground-nesting shorebirds, although it remains largely unknown how they interact with passive predator management techniques such as nest exclosures. I examined the effects of nest exclosures on incubating Piping Plovers (Charadrius melodus melodus) and their predators on nesting beaches in Kouchibouguac and PEI National Parks. A combination of behavioural observations, video monitoring of nests and an artificial nest experiment was used to examine the effects of nest exclosures in this study system. The behaviour of Piping Plovers did not differ between exclosed and unexclosed nests, although different types of predators seemed to have an effect on plover nest attentiveness. Predators visited exclosed nests more often than unexclosed nests and spent more time in the vicinity of exclosed nests than unexclosed nests. Since increased adult mortality and nest abandonment have been documented at exclosed Piping Plover nests, as well as nests of other shorebirds, the results of this study provide evidence of a link between predator harassment and these negative effects.

Book The Effects of Predator Exclosures on Wilson s Plover Charadrius Wilsonia Nest Success and Productivity

Download or read book The Effects of Predator Exclosures on Wilson s Plover Charadrius Wilsonia Nest Success and Productivity written by Lauren Courtney Gingerella and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Predator exclosures have been utilized as a technique to increase breeding productivity among several ground-nesting bird species. The effect of predator exclosures on Wilson's Plover (Charadrius wilsonia) nest success and productivity was studied on Little St. Simons Island, Georgia during the 2016 and 2017 breeding seasons. Exclosures successfully excluded mammalian and avian predators. Nests with exclosures had a significantly higher daily survival rate than unexclosed nests in both breeding seasons. Significantly more chicks hatched and fledged per nesting attempt from the exclosed treatment group than the control group in 2017, but estimates for both treatments were similar 2016. The survival probabilities for chicks were not significantly different between treatments. If every Wilson's Plover nest was protected with an exclosure the population growth rate was estimated to be in decline. Although exclosures can help increase productivity, additional predator management is necessary to maintain viable populations of beach-nesting shorebirds in this region.

Book Efficacy of Predator Exclusion Methods and ID of Nest Predators for Interior Least Terns and Piping Plovers at Off channel Nesting Sites Along the Central Platter River Nebraska USA

Download or read book Efficacy of Predator Exclusion Methods and ID of Nest Predators for Interior Least Terns and Piping Plovers at Off channel Nesting Sites Along the Central Platter River Nebraska USA written by Kaley J. Keldsen and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nest predation is a major cause of failed shorebird reproduction. Management to increase reproductive success and survival of nesting interior least terns (Sterna antillarum athalassos; hereafter, least tern), and piping plovers (Charadrius melodus) that nest along the Central Platte River focuses on constructing and managing off-channel nesting habitats that are protected and monitored for least tern and piping plover productivity (i.e., nesting success and fledging success). However, nest and brood fates of unknown outcome, failed to unknown causes, or failed due to predation have been high for both species. These uncertainties lead to the investigation of avian and mammalian predator presence and mode of access at off-channel nesting sites along the Central Platte River in Nebraska. In chapter 2, we investigated the effectiveness of a predator exclusion method, called a panel wing system, where we determined probabilities of approaches and breaches of predator panel wings present on nesting peninsulas. In chapter 3, we investigated the predator communities on least tern and piping plover nesting peninsulas. The results of these studies will help determine which management techniques are the most effective and possible new management techniques that could be implemented in the future to help reduce predator related issues and increase the success of least terns and piping plovers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wildlife and Recreationists defines and clarifies the issues surrounding the conflict between outdoor recreation and the health and well-being of wildlife and ecosystems. Contributors to the volume consider both direct and indirect effects of widlife-recreationist interactions, including: wildlife responses to disturbance, and the origins of these responses how specific recreational activities affect diverse types of wildlife the human dimensions of managing recreationists the economic importance of outdoor recreation how wildlife and recreationists might be able to coexist The book is a useful synthesis of what is known concerning wildlife and recreation. More important, it addresses both research needs and management options to minimize conflicts.

Book Infectious Diseases of Wild Birds

Download or read book Infectious Diseases of Wild Birds written by Nancy J. Thomas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-01-09 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free-living birds encounter multiple health hazards brought on by viruses, bacteria, and fungi, some which in turn can significantly impact other animal populations and human health. Newly emerging diseases and new zoonotic forms of older diseases have brought increased global attention to the health of wild bird populations. Recognition and management of these diseases is a high priority for all those involved with wildlife. Infectious Diseases of Wild Birds provides biologists, wildlife managers, wildlife and veterinary health professionals and students with the most comprehensive reference on infectious viral, bacterial and fungal diseases affecting wild birds. Bringing together contributions from an international team of experts, the book offers the most complete information on these diseases, their history, causative agents, significance and population impact. Focusing on more than just treatment, special emphasis is given to disease processes, recognition and epidemiology.
