Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia’s pre-eminent comic Renaissance man turns his genius to novel writing. Having conquered television, radio, theatre and film, Shaun Micallef smashes his mighty fist onto the keyboard of his soul and produces a novel of such breathtaking brilliance that if Patrick White were alive today he’d hurl his own typewriter into the sea and start a lawn-mowing business. Suppose you were murdered and woke up 300 years earlier in someone else’s body. Wouldn’t you put yourself in suspended animation and be re-awoken in time to prevent yourself being murdered in the first place? This is the extraordinary tale of an ordinary man in a race against and across time. Join Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, HG Wells, Queen Victoria, Jack the Ripper and Tom Cruise as they unravel a Masonic plot to restore James II to the throne – and in the process, perhaps destroy the Universe itself. Soul transference, time travel, cloning, space ships, Hollywood and the Loch Ness Monster all come together for the first time in one action-packed and beautifully typeset novel. Preincarnate, Micallef’s first – and very probably only – novel, shows not only that he is the rightful heir to the mantle of White but also the unruly bastard son of Barry Humphries, Clive James and Miles Franklin (obviously they’d all been very drunk that night).

Book Mary for Evangelicals

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With his feet planted firmly in the evangelical tradition, Tim Perry began to think that there must be more to Mary than generally meets the evangelical eye. Should we maintain that two thousand years of Christian thought on Mary is almost wholly wrong? How could the mother of our Lord, simply by virtue of the fact that she was God's chosen means of the incarnation, not deserve more serious theological reflection? And where might this lead? Beginning with Scripture, Perry probes the texts and traces the lengthy development of Christian thinking and practice related to Mary. Finally he concludes with a constructive and even surprising theological proposal for an evangelical Mariology that is rooted in, and demanded by, a high Christology. This book addresses the increasing evangelical interest in Mary and contributes to the current discussion of Mariology in evangelical-Roman Catholic dialogue. Sure to be discussed and debated, this is a book that will leave readers in a different place from where they began. Market/Audience Students and professors of theology Pastors Catholic readers Endorsements "From the fathers to the feminists, Tim Perry surveys the history of Marian traditions and comes to some conclusions that are bound to prod and provoke. . . .This is an important study that deserves serious consideration." Timothy George, dean, Beeson Divinity School, Samford University, and executive editor, Christianity Today Features and Benefits Examines what we know of Mary from the New Testament. Explores the development of Mariology in the patristic period. Surveys Mariology in medieval and Reformation periods and on into the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Offers a constructive theological proposal for an evangelical understanding of Mary, rooted in Christology.

Book The Christian Moses

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jared C. Calaway
  • Publisher : McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
  • Release : 2019-11-21
  • ISBN : 0773559809
  • Pages : 230 pages

Download or read book The Christian Moses written by Jared C. Calaway and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two verses about Moses in the Bible have been the subject of debate since the first century. In Exodus 33:20, God tells Moses that no one can see God and live, but Numbers 12:8 says that Moses sees the form of the Lord. How does one reconcile these two opposing statements? Did Moses see God, and who gets to decide? The Christian Moses investigates how ancient Christians from the New Testament to Augustine of Hippo resolved questions of who can see God, how one can see God, and what precisely one sees. Jaeda Calaway explains that the decision about whether and how Moses saw God was not a neutral exercise for an early Christian. Rather, it established the interpreter's authority to determine what was possible in divine-human relations and set the parameters for the nature of humanity. As a result, Calaway argues, interpretations of Moses' visions became a means for Jews and Christians to jockey for power, allowing them to justify particular social arrangements, relations, and identities, to assert the limits of humans in the face of divinity, and to create an Other. Seeing early Christians with new eyes, The Christian Moses reassesses how debates on Moses' visions from the first through the fifth centuries were, in reality, debates on the boundaries of humanity.

Book The Work of Christ

    Book Details:
  • Author : John S. Hammett
  • Publisher : B&H Publishing Group
  • Release : 2024-09-01
  • ISBN : 1462751199
  • Pages : 314 pages

Download or read book The Work of Christ written by John S. Hammett and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2024-09-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Work of Christ, John S. Hammett and Charles L. Quarles examine Christ’s service for his people, especially his atoning work on the cross. The first half of The Work of Christ offers a biblical theology of the atoning work of Christ, from the Pentateuch to the Prophets to the writings of the New Testament. By meticulously examining these cornerstones in Scripture, the authors help readers grasp the full magnitude and significance of Christ's sacrifice for humanity. While the first half of The Work of Christ unearths the biblical roots of Christ's atoning sacrifice, the second half approaches the theology behind the work of Christ systematically, guiding readers to understand how the church has grappled with the atonement through the ages. This section details the work of Christ before the incarnation, in his earthly life and ministry, and on the cross. The authors examine the multifaceted nature of the cross, exploring not just the traditional penal substitutionary view (where Jesus takes our punishment), but also criticisms and alternative perspectives on atonement and its reach. The volume concludes by examining the work of Christ after the cross, from his resurrection to his work still to come in his return. Equipped with a deeper understanding of Christ's work, readers will be empowered to live a life that reflects the profound impact of the Savior's sacrifice. Recognizing that faithful theological study is an integrative task, the Theology for the People of God series uniquely combines biblical and systematic theology in dialogue with historical theology and with application to church and life. This series addresses classic doctrines of systematic theology and other relevant topics, pairing careful scholarship with the practical understanding that theology finds its focus within the context of the church. Together, the series' authors guide readers in developing a theologically informed way of seeing the world, a Christlike response to life, and Christian motivation for ministry.

Book Christ Before Bethlehem

Download or read book Christ Before Bethlehem written by Raymond Horne and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yes, Christ was born in Bethlehem, but Christ’s existence didn’t begin with His coming to this earth as a baby in Bethlehem. The Apostle John emphasized this in the beginning of his gospel: “In the beginning was the Word (Jesus), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made” (John 1:1-3, ESV). Jesus was present at the beginning of creation. He was and is our creator. His pre-existence is further affirmed by His many appearances documented throughout the Old Testament. John F. Walvoord, Christian theologian, pastor, and president of Dallas Theological Seminary believed and taught that “It is safe to assume that every visible manifestation of God in bodily form in the Old Testament is to be identified with the Lord Jesus Christ.” These pre-incarnate appearances of Jesus Christ are called Christohanies. In this book Dr. Raymond Horne digs deep into Scripture giving details of Christ’s pre-incarnate appearances to Abraham, Hagar, Jacob, Moses, Balaam, Joshua, Gideon and Sampson’s mother, lifting out life principles and practical applications for today.

Book excerpt: With stories of angelic encounters all around us, Reasoning from the Scriptures Ministries president Ron Rhodes delves into the biblical truth about these heavenly beings. Some current reports are so utterly remarkable they have captured widespread attention. Curiously, however, many of these seemingly celestial visitors have little in common with the angels of the Bible. Angels are very much involved in our lives today--of that we can be certain. But when it comes to angels, how can we tell what is real and what isn’t? Angels Among Us provides solid, biblically based answers to pressing questions through a fascinating--and highly inspirational--tour of God’s Word. Readers will discover who angels are, what they are like, what they do...and most exciting of all, the ministry they have today. This book has sold nearly 150,000 copies and now boasts an updated cover to bring its balanced message to new readers.
