Book Prehistory of Lake Athabasca

Download or read book Prehistory of Lake Athabasca written by James Vallière Wright and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 1975-01-01 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The position of Lake Athabasca relative to the Plains, Boreal Forest, and Arctic physiographic zones, which have changed through time in response to climatic fluctuations, has resulted in cultures adapted to these three zones occupying areas of the lake during certain periods. During the later prehistory, the western half of the lake was exploited by a Plains-derived, bison hunting culture whereas the eastern half of the lake was exploited by a Boreal Forest-derived, caribou hunting culture.

Download or read book North of Athabasca written by Lloyd Keith and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2001-03-29 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using unused or little-known documents, Keith fills in gaps and corrects inconsistencies in previous information about the company. North of Athabasca not only includes the extensively annotated texts of eleven North West Company documents but Keith's introductory essay amplifies what is known about the context of the fur trade. His biographical notes provide personal details about the proprietors and clerks involved in the fur trade as well as the engagés and aboriginal trading leaders. A sketch of the trading activities of every Native mentioned in the journals is included. Engagés are shown to be more than labouring drones - Keith demonstrates that men such as Jean-Baptiste LaPrise were as important in furthering the interests of the North West Company north of Athabasca as any of the clerks or proprietors who kept the accounts and wrote the journals included here. The journals, often in fractured English or colloquial Canadian French, and incorporating aboriginal terminology, make intriguing reading. A glossary is provided to assist with some of the more arcane terms. North of Athabasca fills an important void in the literature on this period and region. Readers interested in fur trade history as well as students of exploration, genealogy, ethnography, and Native studies will find this a welcome addition to the literature on a fascinating topic.

Book Depositional History of Sediments in Lake Athabasca

Download or read book Depositional History of Sediments in Lake Athabasca written by Richard A. Bourbonniere and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this study was to collect and analyse high quality, well-described sediment cores for use in defining the depositional history of sediment-bound contaminants in Lake Athabasca, including those which have atmospheric or upstream sources. The researchers dated the cores using the lead and caesium methods, and used these geochronological results to determine sedimentation rates and time scales, as well as the suitability of the cores for subsequent contaminant analyses. Selected cores were to be analysed for particle size distribution, bulk carbon and nitrogen species, radionuclides, total polychlorinated dioxins and furans, heavy metals, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, fatty acids, and biogeochemical marker parameters derived from alkanes and fatty acids. Results presented include trends in contaminant concentrations over the past century, correlations of observed trends with human activities or natural occurences, and likely sources of sediment contaminants.

Book Alberta s Lower Athabasca Basin

Download or read book Alberta s Lower Athabasca Basin written by Brian M. Ronaghan and published by Athabasca University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, the oil sands region of northeastern Alberta has been the site of unprecedented levels of development. Alberta's Lower Athabasca Basin tells a fascinating story of how a catastrophic ice age flood left behind a unique landscape in the Lower Athabasca Basin, one that made deposits of bitumen available for surface mining. Less well known is the discovery that this flood also produced an environment that supported perhaps the most intensive use of boreal forest resources by prehistoric Native people yet recognized in Canada. Studies undertaken to meet the conservation requirements of the Alberta Historical Resources Act have yielded a rich and varied record of prehistoric habitation and activity in the oil sands area. Evidence from between 9,500 and 5,000 years ago—the result of several major excavations—has confirmed extensive human use of the region’s resources, while important contextual information provided by key geological and palaeoenvironmental studies has deepened our understanding of how the region’s early inhabitants interacted with the landscape. Touching on various elements of this rich environmental and archaeological record, the contributors to this volume use the evidence gained through research and compliance studies to offer new insights into human and natural history. They also examine the challenges of managing this irreplaceable heritage resource in the face of ongoing development. Contributors: Alwynne Beaudoin, Angela Younie, Brian O.K.
