Book The Pottery from Arroyo Hondo Pueblo New Mexico

Download or read book The Pottery from Arroyo Hondo Pueblo New Mexico written by Judith A. Habicht-Mauche and published by School for Advanced Research Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arroyo Hondo Pueblo, one of the largest fourteenth century sites in the northern Rio Grande region, was excavated by the School of American Research under the leadership of Douglas W. Schwartz between 1970 and 1974. In this eighth volume of the Arroyo Hondo Archaeological Series, Judith A. Habicht-Mauche presents a masterful description and interpretation of the pottery from Arroyo Hondo. Habicht-Mauche builds on an exhaustive study of the mineralogical and chemical attributes of the ceramic assemblage to produce a penetrating evaluation of the stylistic diversity, origins, and changes through time of the pottery types found at Arroyo Hondo. From this analytic foundation, she draws larger conclusions on the structure of the pueblo's social and economic alliances and their significance for understanding population expansion, resource competition, regional trade, craft specialization, ethnic diversity, and the rise of tribal networks throughout the northern Rio Grande region. In additional reports, Richard W. Lang provides an analysis and seriation of stratigraphic ceramic samples from the pueblo, and Anthony Thibodeau describes the miscellaneous ceramic artifacts including pipes, effigies, balls, and beads. This volume also contains a final report on the stone artifacts from Arroyo Hondo, in which Carl J. Phagan accomplishes a comprehensive reconstruction and interpretation of the lithic data collected at the site in 1971-72 and 1973-74.

Book Anasazi Pottery

Download or read book Anasazi Pottery written by Robert Hill Lister and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 1978 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalogue describes and illustrates ten centuries of prehistoric south-western pottery, most of it from the Four Corners country, where New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona meet. The pottery shown here was collected by pioneering southwestern archaeologist Earl H. Morris (1889-1956). Since Morris's death, his collection has been housed in the University of Colorado Museum. Most of the vessels in the Morris Collection are illustrated here. While the catalogue concentrates on pieces from the area between Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde, a few pots from other regions demonstrate the variations in prehistoric pottery making in the Southwest. Morris's comments from his own catalogue of the collection are included. In addition to describing the vessels, he tells how each came into his possession -- where he found it or what he traded for it. The Listers have added information about type, size, and provenience. Originally published in 1969, this catalogue has proved its value to ar-chaeologists, collectors, and readers interested in the history of southwest-ern archaeology.

Download or read book Pottery of the ancient Pueblos 1886 N 04 1882 1883 pages 257 360 written by William Henry Holmes and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pottery of the ancient Pueblos" by William Henry Holmes is a guide to prehistoric Pueblo pottery. The ancient Pueblo peoples dwelt in a land of cañons and high plateaus. They had their greatest development in the valley of the Rio Colorado, where they delighted to haunt the shadows of the deepest gorges and build their dwellings along the loftiest cliffs. The limits of their territory are still undefined. We discover remnants of their arts in the neighboring valleys of Great Salt Lake, Arkansas, and the Rio Grande, and southward we can trace them beyond the Rio Gila into the table-lands of Chihuahua and Sonora.
