Book Encyclopedia of the History of Classical Archaeology

Download or read book Encyclopedia of the History of Classical Archaeology written by Nancy Thomson de Grummond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-11 with total page 1357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 1,125 entries and 170 contributors, this is the first encyclopedia on the history of classical archaeology. It focuses on Greek and Roman material, but also covers the prehistoric and semi-historical cultures of the Bronze Age Aegean, the Etruscans, and manifestations of Greek and Roman culture in Europe and Asia Minor. The Encyclopedia of the History of Classical Archaeology includes entries on individuals whose activities influenced the knowledge of sites and monuments in their own time; articles on famous monuments and sites as seen, changed, and interpreted through time; and entries on major works of art excavated from the Renaissance to the present day as well as works known in the Middle Ages. As the definitive source on a comparatively new discipline - the history of archaeology - these finely illustrated volumes will be useful to students and scholars in archaeology, the classics, history, topography, and art and architectural history.

Book Pindar s Songs for Young Athletes of Aigina

Download or read book Pindar s Songs for Young Athletes of Aigina written by Anne Pippin Burnett and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-09-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of individual studies of Pindar's eleven odes for Aiginetan victors, preceded by a brief survey of the history of the island and the nature of its aristocracy. Anne Pippin Burnett's discussion is particularly attentive to questions of mythic self-presentation, as exemplified in the pedimental sculptures of the Aphaia Temple and the parallel `narrative' sections of the odes. The overall concern is with Pindaric techniques for unifying an audience and leading it into a shared experience of inspired success, but there is also a concern with the realities of athletic contest and its celebration.

Book A Local History of Greek Polytheism

Download or read book A Local History of Greek Polytheism written by Irene Polinskaya and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-11-28 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive and detailed study of the deities and cults of the important Greek island-state of Aigina from the Geometric to Classical periods (800-400 BCE). It rests on a thorough first-hand reconsideration of the archaeological, epigraphic and literary evidence. The development of the local cults is reconstructed, along with their interrelationships and how they responded to the social needs of the Aiginetans. Revising other recent models of interpretation, the author proposes a distinctive approach, informed by anthropology and social theory, to the study of the religious life of the ancient Greeks. On this basis, she uses the case of Aigina to explore fundamental issues such as the nature and variety of local religious worlds and their relationship to the panhellenic concepts and practices of Greek religion.

Book The Aigina Treasure

Download or read book The Aigina Treasure written by Nigel Meeks and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its arrival at the British Museum in 1891, the Aigina Treasure - a group of Greek Bronze Age gold jewellery and other objects that is believed to come from the island of Aigina - has been shrouded in mystery and speculation. The many uncertainties about the Treasure include: its place of origin; whether all the objects are from the same findspot; whether it should be considered as a homogenous group. Through examination of stylistic elements and comparison with objects from other collections, the contributors to this volume variously argue for the Treasures possible Minoan, Mycenaean, Near Eastern and Egyptian connections. Major discoveries in the field have been made since Reynold Higgins' 1979 publication on the Treasure, including the excavation of a warrior shaft grave in Aigina in 1981. The essays are complemented by a complete catalogue of the Treasure, which incorporates the results of an extensive technological examination and is accompanied by specially taken, beautiful colour photographs.

Book Prehistory of the Paximadi Peninsula Euboea

Download or read book Prehistory of the Paximadi Peninsula Euboea written by Tracey Cullen and published by INSTAP Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of two related fieldwork projects are presented: a brief salvage excavation at Plakari (a Final Neolithic site near the modern town of Karystos) and a survey of prehistoric sites on the Paximadi peninsula (the western arm of the Karystos bay), both located in southern Euboea. These ventures were part of the larger mission of the Southern Euboea Exploration Project (SEEP), a multidisciplinary research program dedicated to the study of the Karystian past and which maintained a presence in southern Euboea for over 25 years. These projects have found that, contrary to what archaeologists once believed, southern Euboea was hardly an uninhabited and isolated region in prehistory. The inhabitants actively participated in the expanded maritime and social landscape that characterized the later Neolithic and Early Bronze Age in the Aegean, taking part in exchange networks of stone, ceramics, marble figurines and vessels, and possibly agricultural goods and metalwork.

Book The Sanctuary of Aphaia on Aigina in the Bronze Age

Download or read book The Sanctuary of Aphaia on Aigina in the Bronze Age written by Korinna Pilafidis-Williams and published by Hirmer Verlag GmbH. This book was released on 1998 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The island of Aigina has often played a key role in the history of Greece. The well-known temple of Aphaia, having been in existence since the Late Archaic Period of the Iron Age, was preceded 1100 years, by a Doric temple on the same site. The publication is focused particularly on those early days. Terracotta-statues and other finds point to a major Mycenean cultural and religious centre on the east terrace of Aiginia, the highest point on the island, upon which, in the Archaic and Classic Periods, the altar was located. The book is divided into a catalogue of finds, (terracottas, pottery, animal-shaped rhyta, and chariots), an investigation into the presence of a bronze-age cult, a look at the nature of the deity »Kourothropos«, an elaboration on the substantiated bronze-age cult, a historical summary and an appendix.
