Adolescents may engage in risky sexual behaviors (RSBs): early sexual initiation, multiple and non-monogamous relationships, contraception inconsistency, and greater age difference between partners. These youths are more likely to have negative outcomes later in life, like unplanned pregnancy, contraction of sexually transmitted diseases, and other issues. This project examines the relationship between various social and demographic factors and their implications on RSB with the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health data (N = 4135). Of the unmarried teenage sample, 37% of respondents engaged in at least one risky sexual behavior. Delinquency, substance use, friends' substance use and sexual knowledge increase the odds of RSB. Parental support and involvement reduce the risk of RSB. Logistic regression found that African American boys and girls had higher rates of risky sexual behavior than their white counterparts, and that the rates at which boys and girls engaged in risky sexual behavior also varied significantly among certain predictors.

Book excerpt: Due to high rates of teenage pregnancy and STI contraction, it is important to understand what contributes to risky sexual behaviors that are associated with unintended pregnancy and STI contraction. The relationship between virginity status, ethnicity, gender, age, socioeconomic status, religion, self-esteem, self-efficacy, depression, academic achievement and aspirations with five aspects of risky adolescent sexual behaviors was examined. Secondary data analysis was conducted on the responses of 1,358 adolescents from Wave 1 and 2 of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Ethnic differences diminished and sex differences were non-existent after inclusion of the other independent variables. Self-efficacy and depression were the strongest predictors of risky sexual behaviors. Therefore, comprehensive sexual education programs, which promote self-efficacy, should be a standard method of sexual health education for adolescents.

Book excerpt: While risky sexual behavior can lead to negative consequences such as sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy, sexual behavior also is a healthy part of human development. By understanding the social and cognitive processes that influence sexual behavior choices during adolescence and young adulthood, we will be better able to promote positive sexual health and reduce risky sexual behavior and its negative consequences, included sexually transmitted infection and unintended pregnancy. This dissertation examined three sets of questions related to sexual behavior during adolescence and young adulthood. The first study used structural equation modeling and found that the data supported many of the prosocial developmental paths described by the social development model, for example a positive family and school environment predicted prosocial norms and healthy beliefs, which in turn predicted a later age of sexual initiation. The second study used latent class analysis to identify five classes of sexual behavior from ages 19 to 23. The study showed that while young adult men and women exhibit similar patterns of sexual behavior, there were important differences in the levels of individual sexual risk behaviors within the behavior patterns and in the proportion of males and females estimated to be in the Higher Risky Sex class. This study also showed that risk and protective socialization processes during adolescence impact sexual behavior during young adulthood. The third study used the 5 identified latent classes of sexual behavior, and found that these classes differentially predict health and social outcomes at age 24. These studies have several implications, including providing support for enhancing prosocial environments at the family, school, and peer levels, providing insight into specific health messaging for young adults to improve their sexual health, and the importance of contextualizing sexual behavior as one component of overall health that is linked to other areas of a person's health.

Knowledge of the extent of these problems and changes in their course over time is important. In its absence, interventions and health planning in general can be difficult. Understanding which risk and protective factors are relevant to which problem behaviors is also essential for the formulation of theories that constitute the basis of intervention. This book draws on the results of the major Pittsburgh Youth Study complemented by follow-up tracking of juvenile court records for more than six years, to address the following questions: *What is the prevalence and age of onset of delinquency, substance use, and early sexual behavior for three samples of boys age 8, 11, and 14? What are the average mental health problems for these ages? How strong are the relationships among these problem behaviors in each of the samples? *Which variables best explain individual differences among the boys in their manifestations of delinquency, substance use, early sexual behavior, and mental health problems? To what extent do explanatory factors vary with age? How accurately can boys with different outcomes be identified by risk scores based on hierarchical multiple regressions? *To what extent are explanatory factors associated with one outcome that are also associated with other outcomes? Are explanatory factors that are especially characteristic of a multiproblem group of boys--who display many different problem behaviors--different from explanatory factors associated with boys with few problems? *Do the results fit a general theory of juvenile problem behaviors, or is a differentiated theory more applicable?

Book excerpt: Over one million U.S. teenagers become pregnant each year. In addition to pregnancy risk, adolescents are at risk for a variety of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including AIDS. Little is known regarding the multivariate contributions to adolescent sexual behavior. The following study was designed to test a Developmental Social-Learning Model of adolescent sexual behavior. According to this model, adolescent sexual behavior is a function of maturation, socio-demographic factors, and the social-learning influences of parents, school, media, and peers. These variables in turn impact the knowledge, attitudes, self-efficacy, social skills and drug use of the developing adolescent. Method. The Developmental Social-Learning Model of adolescent sexual behavior was tested in a sample of 404 Anglo and Latino adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17. Data were collected by a face-to-face interview and a videotaped role-play procedure assessing relevant social skills. Hierarchical regression analysis was calculated to assess the relative contribution of variable blocks to the variation in adolescent sexual activity. Hierarchical analyses were also calculated separately for males, females, Anglos, and Latinos. Lastly, hierarchical equations were calculated to assess the utility of the model in explaining the condom behavior of coitally active adolescents. Results. Each of the nine variables blocks contributed significantly to the hierarchical equation, accounting for a total of 58% of the variance in adolescent sexual activity. When calculated differentially for males, females, Anglos, and Latinos, the model remained highly significant for all groups. The hierarchical models of condom use accounted for 28% of the variance in condom use in the first relationship and 49% of the variance in condom use in the last six months. Conclusions. The significant contributions of the variable blocks to the variation in adolescent sexual activity supports the validity of the Developmental Social-Learning Model. Calculations of separate models for males, females, Anglos, and Latinos highlight several important distinctions between these groups. Finally, the application of the model to the condom behavior of coitally active adolescents provides a more thorough understanding of condom behavior and targets specific areas for future interventions.

The two papers comprising this dissertation utilize data from a community sample of Mexican-origin adolescents participating in a prospective, longitudinal research study. Paper 1 examines the longitudinal relationship between ethnic discrimination and adolescent substance use behaviors. This study extends previous work by examining these processes in children of Mexican origin, who are often neglected in research on discrimination. Findings reveal that ethnic discrimination from peers at school predicts increases in substance use across a five-year period of adolescence. Paper 1 also assesses supportive parenting as a source of resilience by investigating potential compensatory and buffering effects on adolescent drug and alcohol use. Paper 2 examines the extent to which, during the transition from late childhood into adolescence, individual and contextual characteristics of female youth predict engagement in risky sexual behavior. This paper addresses a need in the current literature on sexual risk-taking by investigating predictors of this behavior for girls of Mexican origin, who often report higher levels of risky sexual behavior than other ethnic groups. Results indicate that early pubertal development and affiliating with deviant peers are important direct predictors of later sexual behavior. This study also examines indirect and transactional relationships between study variables. Together, these papers enhance our understanding of the family, peer, and personal characteristics of minority children that influence the development of health risk behaviors.
