Book excerpt: This predictive surficial geology map is derived from integrating digital datasets of satellite imagery and interpreted air photos. The limit of airphoto interpretation defines training areas where surficial geology map units and landforms have been identified, and used in the generation of the predictive map. Some additional geological features in these areas include small bedrock outcrops, kames, thermokarst depressions, patterned ground, beach ridges, and escarpments. These features may also exist beyond the boundaries of the airphoto interpreted areas. Lakes may include hydrographic layers and mask areas.

Book excerpt: Surficial geology maps provide important geoscience information for geological reconstructions, mineral exploration and development, and land use planning. In this study, remote predictive mapping was used to derive a predictive surficial geology map for Marian River NTS 85N, which straddles the Slave, the Bear-Slave and the Interior Platform geological provinces. The predictive map was generated using radiometrically balanced LANDSAT 7 imagery (collected in 2001) and knowledge from airphoto interpretations, fire history, elevation models, field observations and legacy datasets. This Open File contains graphical and digital geo-referenced versions of the predictive maps. A printable version of the predictive surficial geology map is provided in pdf format (map scale 1:125 000).

We have designed this book to meet a need of modem geology: namely, a single source providing both detailed and synoptic stratigraphy of the various regions of North America, through geological time. Shortly after beginning work on such a book, we realized why it had not yet been written: it required six years of effort, assimilation of an incredible amount of information, and two years' additional work to cut the volume down to publishable size. Further, by the time the final chapter was written, the fIrst few were already out of date. Nevertheless, the book lies in front of you. It is intended to serve several purposes. Book excerpt: Archaean Geochemistry 1972 - 1984 The realisation that the continental crust contains well-preserved relics which date as far back as 4/5 of the Earth's age has given a great impetus to the study of early Precambrian terrains. As late as the mid-sixties the Archaean still constituted the 'terra-in cognita' of earth science. High metamorphic grades, poor out crop, and not least a widely assumed obliteration of early crustal records by convective recycling and thermal reworking had com bined to discourage research in this field. Many excellent local studies existed, notably around gold mining centres, but remained unrelated to a broader regional and theoretical understanding. This situation has changed as the consequence of two inter-related factors: (1) advances in isotopic methods and their application to Precambrian rocks, and (2) the recognition that some of the oldest terrains have retained a wealth of primary igneous and sedi mentary textures and even geochemical characteristics.
