Book Predictive Surficial Geology Derived from LANDSAT 7 Marian River NTS 85 N Northwest Territories

Download or read book Predictive Surficial Geology Derived from LANDSAT 7 Marian River NTS 85 N Northwest Territories written by M. Ednie and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surficial geology maps provide important geoscience information for geological reconstructions, mineral exploration and development, and land use planning. In this study, remote predictive mapping was used to derive a predictive surficial geology map for Marian River NTS 85N, which straddles the Slave, the Bear-Slave and the Interior Platform geological provinces. The predictive map was generated using radiometrically balanced LANDSAT 7 imagery (collected in 2001) and knowledge from airphoto interpretations, fire history, elevation models, field observations and legacy datasets. This Open File contains graphical and digital geo-referenced versions of the predictive maps. A printable version of the predictive surficial geology map is provided in pdf format (map scale 1:125 000).

Book Predictive Surficial Geology Yellowknife and Hearne Lake Northwest Territories NTS 85 J and 85 I

Download or read book Predictive Surficial Geology Yellowknife and Hearne Lake Northwest Territories NTS 85 J and 85 I written by Geological Survey of Canada and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This predictive surficial geology map is derived from integrating digital datasets of satellite imagery and interpreted air photos. The limit of airphoto interpretation defines training areas where surficial geology map units and landforms have been identified, and used in the generation of the predictive map. Some additional geological features in these areas include small bedrock outcrops, kames, thermokarst depressions, patterned ground, beach ridges, and escarpments. These features may also exist beyond the boundaries of the airphoto interpreted areas. Lakes may include hydrographic layers and mask areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low temperatures, wind-chill, snow, sea ice, and permafrost have been primary characteristics of Canada's northern and alpine environments during the past two million years. The evolution of Canada's cultural landscapes, the processes of settlement of rural areas, and the present interaction of Canadian industrial society with its biophysical environment are all deeply influenced, directly or indirectly, by the frigidity of the greater part of the country. The phenomenon of global warming, if it occurs, will lessen this coldness, but its impact on temperature extremes, sea ice regimes, vegetation, snow distribution, permafrost, glaciers, lakes, rivers, and mountain hazards are all the subject of intensive research -- the highlights of which are reviewed in Canada's Cold Environments. Eleven of Canada's leading geographers, geologists, and ecologists provide an authoritative yet readable scientific statement about the physical nature of Canada's coldness. They focus on the distinctive attributes of Canada's cold environments, their temporal and spatial variability, and the constraints that coldness places on human activity. The book is aimed at environmental scientists at all levels who need informed overviews of the substantive findings on a range of cold-related topics.

Book excerpt: This collection of papers by internationally known scientists in the field of geocryology was originally presented as a series of lectures at the University of British Columbia in 1980-1 in honour of J. Ross MacKay. Together they illustrate the central dilemma in a science where fieldwork must be undertaken in the harsh periglacial environment and where, consequently, it is difficult to test theory rigorously. The papers provide a valuable overview of the current status of international research in a wide area of the field -- permafrost, patterned ground, and cold climate phenomena and processes. The treatment varies from anecdotal, historical, and descriptive to mathematical.

Book excerpt: A passionate argument for Canada's reassertion of its place on the world stage, from a former prime minister and one of Canada's most respected political figures. In the world that is taking shape, Canada's unique success as a diverse society and its reputation as a sympathetic and respected international partner are invaluable assets--at least as valuable as the country's natural resource wealth. As the world becomes more competitive and complex, and the chances of deadly conflict grow, the example and the initiative of Canada can become more important than ever. However, its assets will lose their value if Canadians don't recognize or use them, or worse, if they waste them. How We Lead is a compelling examination of what kind of a nation Canada has been, has become and could yet be. A successful foreign minister himself during the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of Apartheid, Joe Clark employs anecdote and analysis to take readers beyond formal foreign policy and shows how innovative organizations and individuals can put Canada's unique combination of assets to work and renew Canada's constructive influence on international events.

Book excerpt: ‘KUMBA AFRICA’, is a compilation of African Short Stories written as fiction by Sampson Ejike Odum, nostalgically taking our memory back several thousands of years ago in Africa, reminding us about our past heritage. It digs deep into the traditional life style of the Africans of old, their beliefs, their leadership, their courage, their culture, their wars, their defeat and their victories long before the emergence of the white man on the soil of Africa. As a talented writer of rich resource and superior creativity, armed with in-depth knowledge of different cultures and traditions in Africa, the Author throws light on the rich cultural heritage of the people of Africa when civilization was yet unknown to the people. The book reminds the readers that the Africans of old kept their pride and still enjoyed their own lives. They celebrated victories when wars were won, enjoyed their New yam festivals and villages engaged themselves in seasonal wrestling contest etc; Early morning during harmattan season, they gathered firewood and made fire inside their small huts to hit up their bodies from the chilling cold of the harmattan. That was the Africa of old we will always remember. In Africa today, the story have changed. The people now enjoy civilized cultures made possible by the influence of the white man through his scientific and technological process. Yet there are some uncivilized places in Africa whose people haven’t tested or felt the impact of civilization. These people still maintain their ancient traditions and culture. In everything, we believe that days when people paraded barefooted in Africa to the swarmp to tap palm wine and fetch firewood from there farms are almost fading away. The huts are now gradually been replaced with houses built of blocks and beautiful roofs. Thanks to modern civilization. Donkeys and camels are no longer used for carrying heavy loads for merchants. They are now been replaced by heavy trucks and lorries. African traditional methods of healing are now been substituted by hospitals. In all these, I will always love and remember Africa, the home of my birth and must respect her cultures and traditions as an AFRICAN AUTHOR.
