Book excerpt: A technique for predicting the runup distribution of wind-generated waves is presented which extends the traditional method of runup prediction for regular waves (constant period and height) presented in the Shore Protection Manual (SPM) (U.S. Army, Corps of Engineers, Coastal Engineering Research Center, 1975). The basic assumption is that runup has a Rayleigh distribution of the type commonly associated with wave heights. This technique appears conservative but reasonable for predicting extreme values of runup for design purposes. A method of correcting runup for slope roughness and porosity, which is easier to apply than the method presented in SPM, is also presented. Example problems are given using these techniques for both plain and composite slopes. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes methods to calculate the approximate upper limit of runup on riprap revetments caused by irregular wave action. A formula to predict the maximum runup is developed from one laboratory study and compared to data from a second study. The formula is found to fit the data of both studies quite well. A slightly improved version of the formula is then developed by combining the data from both studies. The improved formula has little or no systematic error associated with structure slope, water depth, or wave conditions and is easy to use. Errors between predicted and observed elevations of the maximum runup had a root mean square value of approximately 12 percent. Book excerpt: Rates of wave overtopping of structures can be predicted by means of an equation presented in the Shore Protection Manual (SPM) (eg. 7-6, U.S. Army, Corps of Engineers, Coastal Engineering Research Center, 1975; Weggel, 1976). Implicit in the use of this equation is the assumption of monochromatic waves; i.e., waves of uniform height and period. A question is given on what would the overtopping rate be fore irregular wave conditions having a significant height equal to the height of the monochromatic wave used in the SPM equation. An answer is given: the irregular wave conditions are assumed to cause the runup to have a Rayleigh distribution of the type commonly associated with wave heights. The runup with a Rayleigh distribution is used in the SPM's wave overtopping equation to predict average overtopping rates for irregular waves having a particular significant height. Example problems are given to illustrate how this technique can be used to predict overtopping rates for irregular wave conditions. A table, which can be used to calculate the irregular overtopping rate using the monochromatic rate for equivalent wave conditions is also given.
