Book Development Design Methods for Predicting Hypersonic Aerodynamic Control Characteristics

Download or read book Development Design Methods for Predicting Hypersonic Aerodynamic Control Characteristics written by Z. Popinski and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design methods are developed for determining aerodynamic control effectiveness at hypersonic speeds along body surface. Pressure and heat transfer distributions in separated regions due to aerodynamic control deflection are described in terms of characteristic magnitudes and distance parameters by semiempirical correlations. The forms of these correlations are inferred from theory and experimental data. Using these correlations, pressure distribution in the separated region over a deflected flap is approximated and expressions for force and moment coefficients are determined. General charts are developed which present separation and flow parameters over a range of flight conditions for a typical hypersonic vehicle. Flow separation over a fin-plate configuration is presented using experimental measurements. Also, characteristics of flow over a flat plate, flat delta wing, and delta with dihedral are analyzed using visual flow records and pressure measurements from the point of view of two-dimensional flow. Applicability of the correlation expressions to separated flow on various configurations is discussed and calculated aerodynamic coefficients are compared with measured values.

Book Hypersonic and High Temperature Gas Dynamics

Download or read book Hypersonic and High Temperature Gas Dynamics written by John David Anderson and published by AIAA. This book was released on 1989 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a self-contained text for those students and readers interested in learning hypersonic flow and high-temperature gas dynamics. It assumes no prior familiarity with either subject on the part of the reader. If you have never studied hypersonic and/or high-temperature gas dynamics before, and if you have never worked extensively in the area, then this book is for you. On the other hand, if you have worked and/or are working in these areas, and you want a cohesive presentation of the fundamentals, a development of important theory and techniques, a discussion of the salient results with emphasis on the physical aspects, and a presentation of modern thinking in these areas, then this book is also for you. In other words, this book is designed for two roles: 1) as an effective classroom text that can be used with ease by the instructor, and understood with ease by the student; and 2) as a viable, professional working tool for engineers, scientists, and managers who have any contact in their jobs with hypersonic and/or high-temperature flow.

Book Hypersonic Vehicle Simulation Model Winged Cone Configuration

Download or read book Hypersonic Vehicle Simulation Model Winged Cone Configuration written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-11-18 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerodynamic, propulsion, and mass models for a generic, horizontal-takeoff, single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) configuration are presented which are suitable for use in point mass as well as batch and real-time six degree-of-freedom simulations. The simulations can be used to investigate ascent performance issues and to allow research, refinement, and evaluation of integrated guidance/flight/propulsion/thermal control systems, design concepts, and methodologies for SSTO missions. Aerodynamic force and moment coefficients are given as functions of angle of attack, Mach number, and control surface deflections. The model data were estimated by using a subsonic/supersonic panel code and a hypersonic local surface inclination code. Thrust coefficient and engine specific impulse were estimated using a two-dimensional forebody, inlet, nozzle code and a one-dimensional combustor code and are given as functions of Mach number, dynamic pressure, and fuel equivalence ratio. Rigid-body mass moments of inertia and center of gravity location are functions of vehicle weight which is in turn a function of fuel flow. Shaughnessy, John D. and Pinckney, S. Book Nonequilibrium Hypersonic Aerothermodynamics Using the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo And Navier Stokes Models

Download or read book Nonequilibrium Hypersonic Aerothermodynamics Using the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo And Navier Stokes Models written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypersonic flight vehicles are a current topic of interest in both civilian and military research. NASA is currently designing a Crew Transport Vehicle (CTV) [44, 69] and Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) [32] to replace the space shuttle; reentry vehicles are, by definition, hypersonic vehicles. Military requirements for reconnaissance and surveillance, as well as the mission of the United States Air Force to rapidly project power globally makes the design of a hypersonic plane that can quickly traverse the globe very attractive [102]. The design of hypersonic vehicles requires accurate prediction of the surface properties while in flight. These quantities are typically the heat flux, pressure and shear stress, from which the aerodynamic forces and moments can be calculated. These variables govern not only the aerodynamic performance of the vehicle, but also determine the selection and sizing of the thermal protection system (TPS), which protects the vehicle from the extreme temperatures encountered at hypersonic velocities. The geometry of a vehicle, and in particular, the nose and the leading edges of wings and other aerodynamic surfaces, is a critical consideration in a vehicle's design. Aerodynamic heating is inversely proportional to the square root of the 1 radius at the stagnation point; hence, historically most vehicles have had blunted noses and leading edges to reduce the thermal loads to acceptable levels. Recently, however, a class of materials, designated Ultra-High Temperature Ceramic (UHTC) composites, has been developed that can withstand temperatures as high as 3500 K [57, 78]. Materials such as these allow the use of much sharper leading edges.
