Book excerpt: This report describes research done to predict and measure the lateral earth pressures of a Piedmont Residual Soil, in the Charlotte Belt of North Carolina. A system was devised to measure the lateral earth pressure using a full-scale field test by using two parallel retaining walls, excavated in-between, as large moment cells. Preliminary modeling was done with the finite element program Plaxis to determine the optimal spacing of the walls, length of piles, type of piles, length of wall and excavation depth. The models were running using soil properties from past residual soil studies and it was decided to use 35 ft. PZ22 sheet piles, with an excavation depth of 20 ft. in 4 ft. lifts. A site was chosen just south-east of Statesville, North Carolina and preliminary SPT tests were done to confirm the presence of residual soil and to ensure complicating factors were minimized. Once the location was selected soil properties were obtained through SPT, CPT, DMT, and BST tests and used to created predictive models. Vibrating gages and inclinometer casings were affixed to representative sheet piles and driven as part of the center area of wall. After testing, the strain and deflection from each lift was obtained and through differentiation, approximations were made for the earth pressure distribution. The earth pressure distributions were then compared to results from Plaxis and hand calculations to examine consistency. From this work, a generally reasonable earth pressure distribution was obtained. Future investigations will be used tweak the distributions with the goal of obtaining a more accurate representation.

This document provides the design engineer with information that can be used to develop a rationale for accepting or rejecting data and for resolving inconsistencies between data provided by different laboratories and field tests. This document also includes information on: (1) the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Personal Data Assistance devices for the collection and interpretation of subsurface information; (2) quantitative measures for evaluating disturbance of laboratory soil samples; and (3) the use of measurements from geophysical testing techniques to obtain information on the modulus of soil. Also included are chapters on evaluating properties of special soil materials (e.g., loess, cemented sands, peats and organic soils, etc.) and the use of statistical information in evaluating anomalous data and obtaining design values for soil and rock properties. An appendix of three detailed soil and rock property selection examples is provided which illustrate the application of the methods described in the document.
